JNLR radio figures: RTÉ Oliver Callan’s listenership drops again – and Newstalk gets a morning boost

Oliver Callan’s Nine O’Clock Show on RTÉ Radio 1 has seen another drop in listenership, according to the latest JNLR figures.

Comedian Callan took over the slot permanently from Ryan Tubridy, who was last on air in June last year.

There has been a drop of 13,000 listeners in the radio show in the latest figures.

The programme had a listenership of 343,000 in February of this year.

In November last year, the slot had a weekday audience of 347,000.

Despite the drop in listenership, the number of people tuning in each day stands at 330,000.

On the other side of the dial, Newstalk have seen a boost in their morning listenership.

The Pat Kenny Show has a listenership of 229,000, up 55,000 in the last year and an increase of 13,000 book on book.

Newstalk Breakfast with Ciara Kelly and Shane Coleman has an audience of 157,000 listeners, an increase of 8,000 book on book.

Back at Montrose, the national broadcaster’s weekend shows have all benefitted as Sunday with Miriam has 304,000 listeners, an increase of 12,000 book on book, and Saturday with Colm Ó Mongáin has 242,000 listeners, an increase of 20,000 book on book.

Morning Ireland remains Ireland’s most-listened to radio programme with 469,000 listeners this book, an increase of 32,000 year on year.

However, this is a drop of 17,000 book on book, the programme enjoyed a total of 486,000 listeners three months ago.

Today with Claire Byrne, continues to see 341,000 listeners tuning in every weekday, marking no change from February of this year.

The Louise Duffy Show has 218,000 listeners, an increase of 4,000 book on book while the News at One, which said farewell to long time host Bryan Dobson this month, has 301,000 listeners, an increase of 2,000 year on year.

Gavin Jennings will take over from Dobson on the News at One as RTÉ seek a permanent replacement for their most famous news anchor.

Liveline with Joe Duffy has a listenership of 301,000, a decrease of 2,000 book on book. The Ray D'Arcy Show weekday afternoons has 181,000 listeners and Drivetime has 220,000 listeners tuning in every evening, a drop of 1,000 book on book.

The Brendan O’Connor Show on Saturday has 352,000 listeners, an increase of 10,000 book on book, with 355,000 listeners now tuning in on Sunday, a jump of 12,000 book on book.

Head of RTÉ Radio 1 Peter Woods said this is a tribute “as always to our presenters and the hard work of our exceptional production teams and to the enduring support of our listeners”.

“A resilient book for RTÉ Radio 1 with ten out of the top ten most listened to programmes in the country, seventeen out of the top twenty, 671,000 listeners between nine and twelve every weekday and our weekends growing incrementally.”

Meanwhile on 2FM, the station’s Breakfast show with Doireann, Donncha, and Carl has 143,000 listeners tuning in on weekday mornings, a drop of 3,000 book on book.

Garrihy will leave RTÉ 2FM after five years to focus her time on her podcasts and travel. She will present her final show on May 31.

Jennifer Zamparelli on 2FM has 135,000 listeners to her 9-12pm show, a drop of 1,000 since February.

Tracy Clifford has 121,000 listeners enjoying music each lunchtime, an increase of 8,000 over the last three months.

Drive It with The 2 Johnnies continues to entertain listeners across the country in the afternoons with 151,000 listeners, an increase of 1,000 book on book.

Laura Fox from 9am-12noon has 129,000 listeners on Saturdays, a jump of 8,000 book on book and 120,000 on Sunday, an increase of 5,000 over the last three months.

Roz and Emma on 2FM from 12-3pm have 124,000 listeners on Saturdays, a drop of 2,000, and 97,000 listeners on Sundays.

Head of RTÉ Radio Strategy and RTÉ 2FM Dan Healy said 2FM continues to “increase its audiences with a growing share of 15- to 34-year-olds".

“This was a great book for Tracy Clifford with strong growth both book-on-book and year-on-year. The 2 Johnnies and the breakfast show continue to consolidate recent audience gains,” he said.

“Doireann leaves 2FM Breakfast in great shape, and Laura Fox continues to grow her show across weekends. It is great to have an exceptionally talented team both on and off air and I am confident that 2FM will continue to perform well for the rest of the year.”

Meanwhile, Newstalk now has 852,000 listeners each week, a market share of 8.2pc and a daily audience of 489,000.

Newstalk Breakfast with Ciara Kelly and Shane Coleman has an audience of 157,000 listeners, an increase of 8,000 book on book.

On Today FM, Ian Dempsey enjoys an audience of 216,000, however, this is a drop of 12,000 book on book.

Dave Moore holds the largest audience on Today FM with 228,000 listeners, a drop of 2,000 for his 9am-12pm show. Louise Cantillon at lunchtime is proving successful with audiences drawing in 139,000 listeners.

iRadio has a weekly reach of 358,000 listeners, up 13,000 since the last results and a market share of 7.8pc. iRadio’s drivetime show Dave & Fionnuala saw a big increase in listenership, jumping 7,000 listeners to 82,000.
