Adrian Newey has been heavily linked with a move to Aston Martin, but something is holding the announcement back.

Adrian Newey would reportedly be unable to announce a potential move to Aston Martin until September at the earliest due to an agreement with his current employer, Red Bull.

The legendary aerodynamicist has been heavily linked with Aston Martin and has held negotiations with the Silverstone-based outfit following a tour around their brand-new facilities last month.

However, nothing is signed as of yet, and according to a report from Motorsport.com, Lawrence Stroll's team would be unable to reveal their marquee new signing until September due to an arrangement between Newey and Red Bull.

Newey's signature would be the crown jewel in an aggressive recruitment drive from Aston Martin. The British constructor announced the signing of CEO Andy Cowell ahead of the race at Silverstone, and have been heavily linked with Ferrari's Enrico Cardile.

Fernando Alonso was asked about the possibility of a 'super team' with the trio ahead of the British Grand Prix. “I can only evaluate Andy Cowell, obviously, because all the others are just rumours," he said.

“But yeah, the only one rumour that was not in the press for many months was Andy Cowell, and he was the one surprise for everyone.

“I’m very happy obviously. I don't know him personally, and I only respect him as an opponent in the past but I'm looking forward to meet Andy to chat about his view in the team. Obviously Lawrence has a lot of trust in him.”

While Aston Martin's ambitions are lofty, their current on-track predicament is a concerning one. After a promising start to the season, they have slipped steadily down the order, causing frustration for Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Heading into the race at Silverstone, Alonso and Stroll have failed to finish in the top 10 at back-to-back Grands Prix, and the team are losing ground to VCARB, Haas and Alpine in the development race.
