Tech­ni­cal compatibility

Technical compatibility of electrical and electronic products is the fundamental precondition for protecting radio services and applications against interference from the electromagnetic environment on a permanent basis and ensuring the efficient use of the radio spectrum as a non-renewable natural resource. It also meets consumers' expectations with respect to the immunity of electrical and electronic products against interference from the operating environment.

Fundamental requirements to ensure technical compatibility are stipulated in the Electromagnetic Compatibility of Equipment Act (EMVG) and the Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Act (FTEG); the Bundesnetzagentur monitors the transposition of these requirements in European standards (ENs), supporting the work of the standardisation bodies. In the product sector these activities are required before a product is placed on the market and help to enforce preventive protection regulations in the public interest.

Of particular interest are electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and the efficient and interference-free use of radio frequencies. The latter is also covered by the provisions of the Telecommunications Act (TKG), giving the Bundesnetzagentur an active role in the field of radio compatibility as well.
