Dogs and Wildlife

Dogs and wildlife a deadly combination

Pet owners must keep their dogs on leash at all times, except when in the Banff Off-Leash Dog Park or in fenced, private property.

Dogs cause stress for wildlife. Off-leash dogs can trigger aggressive behaviour in animals such as bears, coyotes and elk. A dog running loose may inadvertently attract a pursuing animal to the dog owner or other humans, which could lead to a dangerous encounter.

A dog that agitates wildlife may be seriously harmed or killed. And a bear made aggressive by a roaming dog may have to be relocated or euthanized.

Prevent unsafe situations by using a leash and keeping dogs under control at all times. In addition, bears have been attracted into the Banff townsite by the lure of dog food left outside. As with all food attractants, never leave dog food unattended.
