Join the panel discussion by industry experts on the sidelines of Africa’s Travel Indaba tomorrow, 16 May 2024, as they unpack the theme: ‘Durban is on the move: Zooming in the City’s commitment to tourism development for tomorrow's traveller.’ The panel discussion will be held at Durban Tourism stand number DEC-1G50 at the Durban Exhibition Centre, from 7am-8am. It will be broadcast live on CNBC Africa, DStv channel 410. The aim of the panel discussion is to identify and unpack critical success factors in tourism. These are areas that improve the City’s competitiveness in the global market thus attracting visitors and investors. It also seeks to highlight the various tourism facets that contribute to the bigger Durban Tourism framework. Nirmal Narotam, Director of PAS South Africa will be a guest speaker at the Facilities Management seminar theatre at 10h00 in the Loading Bay Hall between Halls 2 and 3. His talk is titled "Management of critical asset infrastructure at a hospital group – A case study". The management of critical asset infrastructure requires greater care than typical assets. At hospitals, critical assets include diesel generators, heating and ventilation systems, uninterruptable power systems (UPS), fire detection, water storage and supply, electrical distribution and medical systems like medical air and oxygen. To maintain the required high availability of these critical assets, timely response to serious reported failures is crucial. To minimise maintenance costs, a data driven long term predictive maintenance strategy are also required. Typically, hospitals are located across the country. In this paper, for the UPS critical asset, we present a case study in the development and deployment of a centralised software-based monitoring and maintenance strategy. This strategy has led to high availability and lower maintenance costs of the critical assets. This promises to be a very enlightening and informative talk. "Lets all come together to support universities...." Agreed!👏 . 'Students should do more research' but equally important is the need for industry stakeholders to value research by intentionally availing themselves in sharing data when needed. Research drives sustainable development and it needs academia and the industry to collaborate. A considerable number of Namibian scholars have stressed on how insanely challenging it is to collect primary data in our country. This is even more worse for scholars in the diaspora; getting responses from the targetted participants for research interviews is beyond the bounds of possibility. Similar to the need of understanding the importance of partaking in elections (voting), is the need to encourage and educate/ remind the public on the significance of purposefully responding to research invitations. This is not to inspire coercion but to bring awareness in reducing the reluctance to participate in research.
