Communities in Africa are often reluctant to accept new technologies such as the latest clean cooking solutions. Yet, Ener-G-Africa has had great success in introducing its biofuel cooking solutions to communities in countries such as Malawi, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Mozambique. Speaking at the launch of the clean cooking manufacturing plant in the Western Cape, Ener-G-Africa’s Louise Williamson highlights why it is important for companies to first partake in ground-level community engagement to understand a community’s cooking habits, challenges and needs, and then get their buy-in. Ener-G-Africa (EGA) were honoured that Stephen Korabie, the Drakenstein municipality Executive Mayor, officially opened our cookware manufacturing facility in Paarl on the 9th May 2024. The factory produces a range of clean-burning, fuel-efficient stoves and energy-efficient cookware. We were also delighted that Christian Rakos, President of the World Bioenergy Association flew in from Austria to discuss the advantages of green cooking and to chair a very informative panel discussion. The panel included insights from Vanessa Adams (Ranyaka / Fountain of Hope), Amanda Manyani (CQuest Capital) and our own Project and Implementation Manager, Louise Williamson. EGA was grateful for the support from the media, retailers, NGOs and community organisations, who also attended the event. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/drdr_Jy9

Clean cooking has surged to the top of the energy agenda, and for good reason. The recently released Clean Cooking Alliance Annual Report highlights a staggering statistic: four out of five individuals, predominantly women, in Africa continue to cook over open flames. This practice not only detrimentally affects health, gender equality, and the environment but also underscores the urgency for change. In our efforts to mitigate these health challenges, we have committed ourselves to improving the lives of women through our cookstoves and biomass fuel solutions for communities across Sub-Saharan Africa. Our woodstoves use 65% less wood and emit less smoke, while our advanced biomass stoves use biomass fuel pellets or solar power. Therefore, by offering access to clean energy stoves primarily utilized by women, we not only decrease cooking time, but also alleviate the time and risks linked with gathering firewood and smoke-related ailments. This is especially crucial in a region where women in households lacking clean cooking facilities spend an average of five hours daily collecting fuel and preparing meals. Household air pollution claims a staggering 3.7 million lives each year, primarily due to cooking practices involving kerosene, biomass, or coal, according to an article by Energy Monitor. This crisis disproportionately affects African women and girls who bear the burden of household chores, including cooking. Clean cooking through the use of biomass cooking stoves plays a critical role in ensuring a sustainable and good quality of life. The profound impact of unsafe cooking practices on public health has to be addressed. At Ener-G-Africa, we are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of women and lower-income households. Through the distribution of our locally made range of biomass cooking stoves to 12 African countries, Ener-G-Africa promotes access to clean and renewable energy for all. As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, Ener-G-Africa is proud to champion the empowerment of women in the energy sector through skills development and employment. Women are considered the biggest consumers of energy and therefore play a critical role in the development of the industry. Through our 100% women-led solar panel factory in Cape Town, we are actively working towards closing the gender gap in the energy sector, which according to the World Economic Forum, will take 131 years to close. As part of our involvement at the #Africa Energy Indaba this week, Ener-G-Africa also attended the Women in Energy Breakfast at the CTICC yesterday. We engaged with various industry players: Sanedi.org, Lesedi, @SAGEN CET, and Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on how we can collectively work to break barriers for women in the energy industry. This includes working on policies around the adoption of a safe environment, fair management, female inclusion in management positions, flexibility in the workplace and skills development for all. #womenempowerment #womenempowermentmovement #womeninenergy
