Florence man charged with sodomy, assault, more after burglary leaves elderly victims hospitalized

A Florence man has been arrested on several charges, including sodomy and assault, in connection with a home burglary on Howell Street.

Florence Police say they responded to a burglary report at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, finding two elderly women inside the residence with multiple injuries.

Officers administered initial medical aid at the scene.

A 79-year-old victim was subsequently airlifted to UAB Hospital by AirEvac, while a 76-year-old victim was transported to North Alabama Medical Center. Both victims remain hospitalized.

Police identified the suspect through doorbell video footage showing him leaving the area.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Michael Joe Kirkland, Jr. of Florence, was linked to the incident by recovered evidence.

Kirkland faces charges of burglary, sodomy, robbery, and assault. Authorities continue to investigate, with additional charges pending.

Kirkland is currently held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bail, pending an Aniah's Law hearing.
