Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative warned customers on Thursday to be on the lookout for energy scams.
They say scammers will try to pressure people with a sense of urgency, threatening that power will be discontinued without immediate payment.
Officials say the scammers may ask for unusual payment methods like gift cards or cryptocurrency. They’ll also use odd forms of communication like an email, text message, or letter - often using poor grammar or spelling errors. The emails are also often sent from an unusual email address.
When in doubt, Sand Mountain Electric urges customers to call 256-638-2153.
