Free 2 Teach works to provide teachers with the school supplies they need.

Many teachers say their job is never done. Right now, local educators are already planning your child's school year.

Free 2 Teach is helping those teachers help kids. The nonprofit is dedicated to getting school supplies directly in the hands of teachers that need them. They serve all three school systems and more than 80 public schools in Madison County.

Alison Kling is their executive director, but years ago, she taught second and third grade. She's seen first-hand just how important school supplies can be.

"It's not just a pencil, it's a transformational tool in the hands of a child and so we believe that every child, no matter where they live, no matter what school that they're in, deserves an excellent education," Kling said.

However, Kling also knows an excellent education doesn't come cheap. She says national surveys suggest teachers spend between $750 to $1,500 each year on school supplies. In the last two years, she's seen prices increase by 24 percent.

"It's a real need," Kling said. "I don't think people always realize how much teachers spend out of pocket. So, we want them to come here to serve their students."

Last year, Free 2 Teach gave away a whopping $1.7 million in school supplies. They are the only teacher store in Alabama that provides free resources to educators.

Kling says they always welcome volunteers, and every donation helps build a future leader.

"We believe that by investing in teachers, they can in turn, inspire and equip the students in their classrooms," Kling explained.

Free 2 Teach will welcome 100 teachers to their store Monday and every other day after throughout the month. Kling says teachers can then return once a month if they choose to.
