Franklin County Sheriff: 17-year-old drowns at Bates Landing in Phil Campbell

A 17-year-old boy is dead after drowning at Bates Landing in Phil Campbell Saturday night.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff's office, the 17-year-old was with friends when the incident occurred.

The sheriff's office says the group of friends had elected to swim across to the other side of the water with the 17-year-old deciding to stay back.

When reaching the other side, the group didn’t see him. They went back across and started searching for him. After a few minutes, the sheriff's office says someone called 911.

The 17-year-old was recovered by divers near the area where all of them had originally been swimming, the sheriff's office says.

The victim's identity has not been released, but deputies say he was from Marion County.
