Salvation Army kicks off Angel Tree program in Madison County

Connecting North Alabama - Salvation Army Angel Tree

The Madison County chapter of The Salvation Army is kicking off its 2023 Angel Tree program.

Salvation Army Maj. Richard Watts estimates more than 600 families - totaling 2,200 children - are counting on the Angel Tree program to provide presents under their Christmas trees this year.

"A lot of your neighbors are living paycheck to paycheck," Watts said. "They're struggling to make ends meet."

Watts stresses, it is not just poor families feeling the pinch of the sour economy and high inflation this holiday season.

"Sometimes, we have this image where people who need assistance are people who are lazy, who are wasteful. That's not the case at all. These are people who work two or three part-time jobs," said Watts.

The Salvation Army posts those Angel Trees at businesses across Madison County, each bearing a child's age and some items they need and want for Christmas.

Giving a child holiday hope is as easy as 1-2-3!

1. Take an angel off the tree.

2. Go shopping and buy the items on that child's wish list.

3. Return the angel - with the gifts - to The Salvation Army.

Closer to Christmas, it will distribute those gifts to the "little angels," ensuring they have presents under the tree.
