Review of Angama Mara
Reviewed 09 Jul 2022via mobile
I’d like to segment this review in terms of impact that Angama Mara had upon my wife and I. We expected great views, great food, great accommodations and great service, all of which we got in abundance. But our greatest discovery was how well Angama Mara supports the reality of maintaining a perfect ecosystem within the Triangle. They exert great influence in guaranteeing that a perfect natural balance exists where there is virtually no human influence or interference. Humans are there only as observers and ownership takes leadership in assuring that this happens in a pure and sustainable fashion.
Next, the success of any safari experience rests with the quality of your guide. Tito was our guide. Yes, he drove, but he was a botanist, biologist, photographer, tracker, avian expert, host and good friend. Those things coupled with his self confidence, intelligence and charismatic nature would stand him well in any corporate office in Manhattan. It seems that all of their guides were much like Tito.
Finally, the accommodations themselves. If you’re reading this you’ve already read many of the reviews posted next to mine. “Over the top” and “top drawer times two” is enough said. Add to that the perfect cocktail, the perfect wine, the perfect meal, all overseen by your butler and backed up by your tent manager, crosses every “t” and dots every “I”.
We’ll be back.

Dear Anoul,
Thank you for sharing your experience at the lodge here, and allowing us to spoil you so. Tito is the consummate professional, and we are proud to have him on our team - but yes you are right, and we get just as many requests from repeat or referral guests to be guided by Douggy, or Sammy, or Moses, or Fred, or Jackson, or Alice, or Sophie, or Daniel, or Wilson or or or... In fact it's an absolute delight for us when reviews here are littered with names, as the team is unquestionably at the heart of great service, and one's experience as a guest. No doubt Tito will be pleased with your feedback, and I look forward to sharing it with him and the rest of the team. And we look forward to welcoming you back.
Best, Steve

Words can't describe this magical place. We stayed five nights in the Family Suite (two connected rooms) with our three sons, ages 7, 11, and 13, and it was the trip of a lifetime.

If you ever worry about if your kids are old enough for safari, Angama will put those concerns to bed. From the moment you step off the Safarilink flight to the Mara to the moment you say goodbye to your guide and new friend (we miss you, Ken!), your every need is anticipated and cared for. Some of the highlights of Angama for us:

- Daily schedule catered to whatever we wanted to do: wake up early for hot air balloon ride and safari breakfast - sure. Sleep in and breakfast on your private patio followed by a massage - yep. Sunrise to sunset game drive hunting the elusive leopard - they're on it!

- Becoming part of the Angama family: from the moment we arrived, we became part of the Angama family. They not only knew our names but drink preferences. On our 2nd night after safari and before dinner we played soccer with some of the locals, staff at Angama, and other guests. Another day we visited a Maasai village and it was a perspective changing experience. Another day they did a walking safari w/ a local Maasai warrior. Amazing!

- Helle and the planning services: Helle is with Angama and planned our entire trip. Not just Angama but Nairobi hotel, transportation to and from airport, private tour of Nairobi, beach trip to Alfajiri after safari for some relaxation time (highly recommend Alfajiri!), and all of our flights. This was a new experience for us and we felt completely at ease knowing we were in Helle's care.

- The food! Every meal was exceptional. Lots of food was locally sourced at their garden, the Shamba. Each meal had options of African food and more plain things for the kids and they can special order anything you need. The fresh fruits and meats were to die for. Oh the passion fruit juice!

- The photo studio!!! Robert is simply amazing (and patient!). We rented a 500mm lens and spent time w/ Robert every day learning techniques and editing photos. He came by after dinner several nights to help us get our picture of the Milky Way.

Can't recommend Angama highly enough for a once in a lifetime luxury family adventure.

Dear Colleen,
Firstly, thank you for coming to stay with us with your family, we don't take any guests' stay for granted, especially during the uncertain times of late. Secondly, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and thorough review, highlighting everything from travel planning with Helle to photography in the studio with Robert. We are delighted that you all had such a wonderful stay, and took the time to become part of the Angama family in the middle of Maasailand. I hope the experiences at Angama will be formative memories for your children, and inspire a lifelong love of travel, experiencing and enjoying nature, and a desire to continue making friends in far-flung places. With best wishes from us all, Steve

Angama Mara is a first class, warm, and overall incredible experience of the Masai Mara. As most other reviews indicate - great friendly and warm service, beautiful views, and lots of options of activities when you're resting in between game drives. Our guide/driver was named Jackson, and he really made our experience exceptional... He is a very experienced, keen, knowledgeable guide with a sharp eye that found incredible wildlife sightings and interesting animal behaviors for us. Alot of the guests seemed to have similar experiences with their guides, and it really does make your trip. I highly recommend Angama Mara to make your Masai Mara trip a memorable, first class experience!

Room tip: It might be colder than you think... We didn't bring enough pants/sweaters and didn't use the pool at all during our stay in late June.

Dear Angie,
Thank you for sharing your experience here, we are delighted that you so appreciated the hospitality, and in particular your guide Jackson - possibly the most passionate Arsenal supporter on the Angama team. As you mention, it is a team effort and the Angama guides are a special group, and wonderful ambassadors for the Maasai Mara, and Kenya.
Thank you again for your recommendation, it's much appreciated by all of us at Angama
Best, Steve

We stayed at Angama for 3 nights and I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable experiences ever. From the plane landing on the tiny airstrip, my husband and I were blown away by the views and vast expanse of the valley. The drive to the camp was wonderful as we saw elephant, giraffe, baboon and a variety of gazelle. The staff are truly amazing - special shout out to Moses our fantastic guide- he was so knowledgable, friendly and professional- without him we would never have had the opp to be so close to lions, leopards and rhino- amazing. Also special thanks to Kimani and Doris. The ‘tent’ as it is really the most luxe accom was really special - sweeping views over the valley, fabulous roll top bath to soak in - extremely peaceful. All meals we had were excellent and we loved that most of the veg is sourced from the kitchen garden. Sipping champagne on the out of Africa rock was truly special. Can’t thank the whole team enough for a very special trip. I really hope I can do a return trip sometime soon.

Nowhere more perfect to stay on our first visit back to Africa since the pandemic than amazing Angama. The anticipation of that panorama view from the lodge deck across the beautiful Mara did not disappoint…and the wonderful team made us feel at home within seconds of arriving!

Everyone was exceptional was a special mention to Terry who took care of every need and want - even the ones we weren’t aware of! Fred was a great guide and teacher - after numerous safaris I possibly learnt more about the animal behaviour than in any previous trip.

The setting, the design, the tents and the team are renowned at Angama but for me the diversity of experiences on top of the game drives is was makes it truly stand out. Particularly enjoyed the Shamba lunch and the Out of Africa picnics.

As you always say it’s not goodbye, it’s ‘see you soon’ - already counting the days!

Thanks one and all.

Angama is the Swahili word for suspended in mid air, personally I think you are closer to heaven!

Waking up in an enormous tent/room beautifully decorated with everything one could possibly need and watching the hot air balloons take off in the Mara, BELOW you is a pretty awesome way to start the day.

Besides having to make the most difficult choices of what to eat, as every option is more delicious than the last, and having Terry making sure you are never in need of anything, there are so many delights to do at this lodge that no day needs to be the same, which makes it even more special.

We spent a morning beading with the Masai ladies, and then having a picnic lunch with Wilson under a magnificent tree in the Mara before heading out on our game drive. The game viewing and birding were exceptional.

The next day followed with a champagne picnic breakfast breakfast after a sunrise start. We also invited the resident photographer Robert, to join us on our game drives. He was so helpful showing us how to use our personal cameras and take great game photos, a massive bonus.
The informative walks with Lishaan and Patrick, are not to be missed, it is so interesting to learn about the Masai healing plants.
A highlight also has to be a walk through the “Shamba”, their vegetable garden, where they serve you lunch of fresh produce and a delicious glass Chardonnay all the time looking over the Mara….
Lastly we also took timeout in the rimless swimming pool and gym building; this was totally necessary as we had to make space for Chef Moses’s next delicious meal!!

The hardest part of our stay was having to leave….

Room tip: All the rooms have a magnificent view of the Mara.

Dear Wanda,
Moses, Wilson, Leshan, Patrick, Terry, Robert and the Maasai mama's all join me in thanking you for sharing your experience at Angama Mara here, we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay as much as you did - taking the time not just to enjoy the gameviewing on offer in the Triangle, but also the property and everything on offer. I mean aren't holidays meant to be at a slower pace, with the flexibility of a different plan for each day??!
Best regards, Steve
