Review of Angama Mara
Reviewed 03 Mar 2022via mobile

Safari in the Mara is always special particularly when there is an occasion to celebrate. So with friends we decided to splash out a bit more than usual and stay at Angama. The view from 1900 feet above sea level is really stunning. The facilties including the tents are modern and not in keeping with the African Bush feel of other luxury camps. Very attentive staff who are always smiling and ready to assist. Check out the map room which is wonderful. The photo shop on site is very helpful for budding photographers. The selection of wines and spirits are excellent for an all inclusive package. However, the one biggest disappointment is the food. Plenty of it but apart from breakfast was really not consistent. At the rates charged you should not expect anything less than splendid for a place like this. Another dampner was the Bush dinner set out under a small foresty area that felt like a school outing and sundowners where all guests are herded together. These sorts of experiences should be exclusive to each party. If they can work on improving quality of the food and tailor the experiences without herding guests together, this would be a must visit location.

Dear Safarisouls,

I was sorry to hear that you felt the lunch and dinner at Angama Mara was inconsistent, and that this warranted a 3 star review. Our 100% Kenyan team in the kitchen works exceptionally hard every day to deliver a variety of meals for all nationalities and dietary requirements, and we know that we are only judged on the plates that go out each and every day. We will take your feedback to heart, and look at how we can improve our consistency during the next training session which is in a couple of weeks.

Regarding Angama's signature bush dinner in the forest, I'm sorry if we misread your desire to share experience with others, because while we appreciate that some guests prefer privacy and exclusivity, this meal is the single 'family-style' experience that we offer and is often an occasion when new relationships are formed amongst guests, reflecting on their safari days and finding common points of interest.

Nevertheless, thank you for taking the time to share your experience - and if you are to return, I could recommend a stay at our new little Angama Safari Camp, an exclusive-use light-footprint tented camp located in the Triangle that sleeps just eight and which you would have all to yourself - with every meal cooked on the fire in front of you.

Regards,
Steve

This was the first stop on our honeymoon and it absolutely exceeded all expectations! The property itself is one of a kind. The 'tents' are very high-end. The views overlook the entire Masai Mara, it is so beautiful! Our guides was very knowledgeable and personable, their entire team there is amazing! If you are wanting to do a safari I HIGHLY recommended staying here!!! They have a pool and the community center is very chic and great for lounging around!

Anagama Mara is absurdly wonderful. Just book it!

The location is breathtaking. It's perched (literally) on top of the Oolooloo Escarpment - the terrace hangs out over the rocks and it's as though you're in mid air. I loved the height, for the views and because every day started with a descent into the Mara which was a mini game drive in itself.

The buildings and infrastructure are first rate. Imaginative design; high quality materials (lots of dark wood and masses of glass); clever shaded areas and changes of level. The "tents" (actually luxurious apartments) are fabulous spaces, with superb bathrooms and wonderful balconies . It's all absolutely spotless and beautifully maintained.

The food (including plenty of vegetarian options) is very well executed, with super-fresh salads and vegetables straight from their own garden (the Shamba - well worth a visit). The house wines included are good choices - mostly South African but with a few familiar European faces (Guigal CDR, Fevre Chablis). If you want to blow $$$ on a special bottle there's a Reserve list too but the house is good enough not to need it. I appreciated the decanters of whisky and gin in the tent, too!

But what REALLY makes this place is the staff: super-helpful, super-professional and with excellent English. They make your whole experience so easy and enjoyable. It feels unfair to single anyone out but shout out to Tito our guide and Terry our butler - thank you again, guys, you were amazing! (It's Tom here.)

Dear Tom,

Thank you for this very kind review, we nearly fell off our chairs when we saw it was you ;) You certainly do have an engaging way with words

We’re delighted that you had such a wonderful stay and appreciated all the details – between the development of the lodge, what it takes to keep it sparkling every day, and of course the level of every day service and how that made you feel.

Nicky joins me in sending her thanks, as do Terry & Tito, and we look forward to hosting you at our new property in Amboseli at some point in the future

Best,
Steve

We cannot stress enough how incredible this trip was. first of all, the staff are the most welcoming, warm people in the world and everything on the property was stunning, clean and the food was amazing. Doris and Josephat always greeted us with smiles and made sure everything we needed was taken care of. Our server Kimani always had the biggest smile on his face and made every meal exciting and wonderful.

Daniel, our guide, truly made our experience. He is the most patient, knowledgeable and kind man in the world. Anyone who gets him as their guide is SO LUCKY!

We are so sad to leave this place and will definitely be back. This was the most PERFECT experience. Thank you Angama, we love you!

It is hard to find words to convey the beauty of Angama Mara. High up on the escarpment overlooking the Mara, the views are just incredible. Add to that the warmth of welcome and care from all of the Angama staff, slick modern dining spaces, beautiful luxury tented rooms, amazing food and all the delights of the Mara on the doorstep, it really is a taste of heaven on earth. The highlights for us were the game drives with Tito, who has an incredible knowledge and passion for the natural world all around. We also enjoyed our walk with Leshan, and saw round the Shamba, a wonderful kitchen garden which forms the basis of chef Evans’ delicious cuisine. We were beautifully looked after by our ‘butler’ Terry all week. All in all, it was just an unforgettable week. We very much hope to return.

I have passed on your feedback to Tito, Leshan, Evans & Terry – and they are all pleased as punch.

We spent 4 nights here in December and loved every minute of it!

First and most importantly, the view out over the Masai Mara just takes your breath away. Perched about 500ft above the plain, and right on the very edge of the escarpment, you can see for miles over the grassland of the Masai Mara, the Mara River and all the activity that's going on out there - elephants, giraffes, eagles etc. I don't believe that I would ever tire of that view.

In our room, which was also perched on the edge of the escarpment, the picture windows that formed one complete wall also provided the same view - whether you're in bed, showering, in the lovely great big bath or just sitting on the private deck enjoying the tranquility of this beautiful spot.

The staff and the service at the hotel are flawless; warm, helpful, friendly and engaging. Our guide went out of his way to look after us, and everything seemed to be personalised to make our stay as easy, as enjoyable and as memorable as possible.

And finally, the food was totally memorable. It was far better than we have ever had on a safari holiday before. The dishes were beautifully prepared and invariably served with a smile. What makes it even better is that most meals can be taken out on the decking with the Masai Mara right there in front of you. As a breakfast spot, it's hard to beat!

I don't normally write a review as starry-eyed as this, but this hotel would be hard to fault. It's not cheap, but as a place to experience the amazing wildlife of the Masai Mara, and Africa at its most beautiful, it would be hard to beat.

The Angama family couldn't be more delighted that you described your wonderful review as 'starry-eyed'.

Thank you so much for coming to stay with us and for sharing your feedback on TripAdvisor. I noticed that you are a prolific reviewer and this makes the one you wrote on us all the more special. The chefs in particular were tickled pink by your comments about the food you enjoyed during your stay. I am so proud of this fully Kenyan team in our kitchens - they love feeding our guests and I believe that is the magic ingredient.

Our heartfelt thanks and wishing you a year ahead filled with many travel adventures

Warm regards

Nicky
