On the northern side of the Ionian Sea, Corfu’s stunning landscape inspired the setting of stories by Shakespeare and Homer. Today, those picturesque beaches and epic views still draw an audience. Hillsides are studded with whitewashed houses, Byzantine churches, and the remains of Venetian fortresses and Greek temples. Wander the ancient streets of the Roman village of Kassiopi or explore the central Esplanade of Corfu Town. For a DIY spa experience, lather yourself in mineral mud on the shore of the Canal D’Amour. Corfu beaches with a wow factor
With its lush hillsides and calm seas, Corfu is one of my favourite destinations. I always find myself returning to this island to track down a new-to-me beach. From broad swaths of wind-whipped sand dunes to far-flung, pebble-strewn coves, the hardest decision I have to make is where to lay my towel.

Issos Beach481From the moment I spied Issos’ wild, wide sweep of soft, peach-hued sand and shallow cerulean waters, I was smitten. Stable winds make it a draw for kitesurfers and windsurfers, who can rent equipment here. Hike over its rolling dunes, studded with sand orchids, to a rare cedar forest, which sits at the edge of bird-watcher magnet Lake Korission, Corfu’s most important wetland habitat.
Halikounas Beach372Continuing west, Halikounas is another wind-whipped beach loved by sports enthusiasts, including paragliders. I can never resist going for a run along the long, thin strip of caramel-coloured sand. This beach also backs onto the lagoon, where you might be lucky enough to spot flamingoes, among dozens of other bird species. Stay until sunset to witness the landscape awash in a glorious burnt orange glow.
Chouchoulio Beach23I’ll never forget the restful snooze I enjoyed under rustling eucalyptus trees at minuscule Chouchoulio. But don’t expect umbrellas and sun loungers or flawless blond sand. Just north of busy Kalami, where Lawrence Durrell once resided, this is a beach for peace-seeking purists. Underfoot is a mixture of soil, dried seaweed, and pebbles, but don’t let that stop you. Albania is visible across the strait.
Arkoudilas Beach264A 10-minute drive from the party town of Kavos, followed by a dirt road trek, this beach feels remote and relatively untouched, except for a few sunbeds and a beach canteen. Rugged cliffs rise above clay-rich sand ideal for a mud bath. Arkoudilas, where loggerhead turtles come to nest, can also be reached on horseback. Walking trails lead through the forest to 18th-century monastery ruins.
Agios Georgios Beach1,196Well-sheltered, family-friendly Agios Georgios Pagon gives me old-school vibes. There are rickety, real-deal tavernas rather than beat-pumping beach bars. The easily accessible, U-shaped pebble-and-sand beach runs for more than a mile. While there are umbrellas for hire, there’s plenty of space if you want more privacy. Children spend hours snorkelling the fish-filled reef in the translucent shallows. Stick around for sunset.
Mirtiotissa Beach427With shallow aquamarine waters, rock formations in the sea, and a sliver of sand hidden amid shrub-cloaked crags, this swimwear-optional beach is dreamy. East-facing Mirtiotissa, named after a nearby monastery, is, understandably, busy in high season. Turn up early to nab a spot and make the most of the sunshine. Park at the top of the hill and be prepared for a steep walk down.
