A small family run hotel – nice place with good value for money

Reviewed Sep 25, 2017
We had a marvellous time in this small informal hotel. Having seen some bad reviews on the internet I was a bit hesitant, although most recent reviews were positive – almost all from Italian guests. They were proved right. In fact the hotel, being owned and run by Italians, has an Italian touch. The food is delicious and various. During our one week stay they never proposed the same buffet lunch/dinner. We loved the typical dinner with African dishes. For breakfast they mainly serve sweet foods (pastries, crepes etc.), but you can also ask for boiled eggs or an omelette; probably breakfast could be improved by serving more savoury choices. Our room had a traditional style with wooden furniture and air conditioning. Great daily cleaning and daily towel change. The overall service is friendly and attentive – from the owner, through Riccardo at the reception to the waiters etc. The location of the hotel is superb with a beautiful and quiet beach (no beach boys!). We also booked several excursions with the hotel and enjoyed the company and the stories of our guide Eddy.

4 rooms in 8 hours because no airco or not water for shower. The "big boss" Luka is just busy whit new girls for the next night, and eat the best foods and cocktails for himself and his one night lover. The manager Eddy is only there when they call him for a problem. The fence off the balcony and the stairs are very dangerous because they almost finished in site full animals who eat the fences wood. The airco's full bacteriën they never cleaning. Breakfast very poor just old dry bread and only jam and egg. Lunch and dinner are poorest is had in the last year's. The rooms very wet climate and smell bad even the beds and pillow whit dark braun sheets colored. They cleaning only badrooms floors not the walls and windows. The cooker is always stoned about marihuana and can't right walking. All the workers and other people hanging in the bar or around the TV. The tv is so loud you can't read a book or just sit relaxed. Never I will go back there.

Firstly, there was no signpost even in near vicinity to direct me to the location. One is likely to move past it as there is no signboard facing the approach track (yes, a dirt track, there is no proper road) !!
Bathroom fittings are coming apart.
My room door wouldn't lock from outside, so it had to be left open and at the mercy of the hotel staff, along with all the valuables and passport inside!
Wifi signal was not reaching most rooms, an i had tough time uploading pictures to google drive even while sitting outside. The hotel staff agreed to change my room but not before half my stay was already over.
Food menu is inscrutable, being in italian. Besides the prices are unreasonably bloated (about three times the normal). Moreover, you have very few options for dining as all the restaurants in vicinity sell at inflated prices, and all of them are basically italian.
If you want to settle scores with a friend, recommend this place.

The first impression of Blu Marlin upon arrival seemed well. The beach and the pool are very nice, however there are some major shortcomings which are not just a nuissance but also a plain hazard.

1. Location: 25 $pp is too much for a single transfer. You can take a cab at Stone town for 15$ with more people.

2. The room appeared clean, but the water in the shower was salty and the sheets were dark. So there was no way of knowing if it is clean or not. The salty water is an issue, as you can never rinse clean unless you go into the swimming pool.

3. The food is not very good, but it was eadible... Until 7 persons including myself and boyfriend had a Major stomach flu for aprox. 5 more days. As the owner and his family were eating in their own house, they did not get ill. However the customers did, but were not taken seriously at all by the manager and owner. There was no compensation made for 5 days running to the bathroom of our 7 day holidays.

There was clearly a contamination of the food, and the response of the owner was just outrageous.

If you have a sensitive stomach, its better to stay away from blu Marlin. Otherwise just eat white rice.

4. Out of 7 days, we maybe had 2 hours of WiFi.

Well what an amazing stay, we arrived 13 december 15 and stayed for 7 nights and we had the pleasure of staying in th Crocodillo room. 1st floor with pool and sea views amazing again. we were greeted with a nice mango cocktail and given a brief run down of the hotel and its facilities by our fab host and hotel manager Maurizio. lovely small room with a nice basic bathroom but the room and the hotel are soooooo clean we loved it. steps from a beautiful beach so peaceful and clean and hassle free. local fishermen tending their catches and selling the fish to the hotel so you know the food is always fresh and amazing value and quality too. what a lovely hotel with the best staff in the world a big thanks to Maurizio and his team Siad and Abdoullad Bona and raytana sorry if we spelt your lovely name wrong. Go on book this lovely little hotel we went onto the Palumbo hotel in Kendwa which we give 2 out 10 and this hotel we give 10 out 10. thank you all for a lovely week in paradise....xxxxx Paul and Neil UK Boys.

Stayed there with my wife just for three night after our Safari in Tanzania. Very romantic and quiet place. Beautiful beach. A simple hotel but with everything you want. And if something is missing the hotel manager will make sure you have it. Food was good, nothing fancy but hey it's not a 5 star hotel. Great value for money.

Room tip: ground floor is very comfortable
