Quaint and Affordable

Reviewed Apr 1, 2022
The hotel is a little dated and could definitely use some TLC, but it is by far the most affordable hotel in Waikiki and it is only a very short 2 block walk to the beach. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. There was strong enough internet for my partner to complete a zoom interview from our hotel room.

Royal Grove is a beautiful pink hotel with lots of charm. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The location can't be beat (good food and good beach access) and the staff was very helpful. I wish I could have stayed longer.

We have been staying at the Royal Grove since 1980, this will be our last stay. We usually stay for 1-2 months, this trip was only 3 weeks and we paid $1200.US a week, 3 years ago we paid the same total for (3600.US) for 2 months. You can no longer request a certain room number, you get what they give you. They no longer care that you are a repeat customer many times over. They have very helpful staff but that is not reason enough to stay there again.

PRO's:
Location
In Room WIFI
Friendly Staff
No resort fees ( yet )
Free safety deposit box
Laundry on site $1.75 wash $1. dry
Free to use beach towels (you must sign for them)

CON's:

Price$$$$$$ Rates have tripled in the last 3 years, ever since a management company took over the daily operations
Run down rooms (the whole hotel has a feeling of a bad hostel)
Stained curtains
Filthy room chairs
Filthy cutting board (every item in the kitchen had to be cleaned before use)
Old cooking utensils (knives were dull and had nicks in them)
Uneven elements on the stove (everything cooked on an angle)
Knobs on the stove did not have numbers, you had to guess the oven temperature
Every window is filthy
Built up dirt and dust on every surface
Bathroom baseboards were disgusting (see photos')
All other surfaces below eye level have never seen a cleaning cloth
Microwave is located on an outdoor side table under the counter, very awkward
I had to buy drinking glasses and sharp knives and the glasses (3) supplied were the 4oz juice size
Hallway noise , very loud door slamming and people talking at the elevator due to the huge vent in the main door which was open all the time
Most room still have the old air conditioners which are very loud
Only one elevator works, the other has been broken for years
Patio door lock nonexistent, a dowell was laying on the floor to be used in the track for security
The pool is in bad shape. Tiles falling off and just laying on the bottom of the pool, the steps into the pool are hazardous due to missing tiles and uneven cement

This is definitely not the affordable hotel it used to be. With a little searching we found a beautiful condo right across the street for $120.

l understand being an "Old Hawaii" hotel, but "Old Hawaii" doesn't mean run down and dirty. It means CHARM….. Palm tree wall paper, wicker furniture, tropical bedding, etc. The room was insanely dirty. I've never seen such a thick layer of dust as I saw on the tops of the picture frames. The top of the fridge also had a thick layer of dust. The sliding door frame was extremely dirty and the curtain didn't even reach the floor. There was black mold along the edges where the wall and ceiling meet. The vent in the bathroom was absolutely
disgusting. The vent in the ceiling of the elevator was just as bad. I didn't want to walk around barefoot because I can only imagine how dirty the old carpet is. The wooden bathroom door had a white patch job at the bottom where it appears that someone kicked a hole in it. The air conditioner couldn't keep up and even after running it nonstop all day, I was still sweating all night. There was no bedding other than sheets provided but I didn't even need the top sheet because it was so hot. I wish the air conditioner had worked better because it was So LOUD that I couldn't sleep. The pool wasn't open and I wasn't notified ahead of time. I probably would have stayed somewhere different because I chose this hotel
because of the pool. I wonder if they have housekeeping service because I ran out of toilet paper after the first day and had to get some from my brother who was staying somewhere else. Makes me wonder what the homes look like of the people who gave this place a good review. Yikes!

The tap water was good though.

She is an Old Girl & needs some upgrades but she has great beds, clean bathrooms, is only 1 block to the beach, restaurants & shopping right outside the door and inside the doors there is.plenty of Aloha spirit.

Extremely comfy bed, wonderful staff and in the heart of Waikiki and close to everything. Delicious food places underneath. You could hear the traffic but nothing we aren’t used to at home. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for an affordable hotel but don’t want to compromise on location
