Wonderful place, perfect for our visit

Review of 'Ilima Hotel
Reviewed Jul 17, 2021
Ilima Hotel was perfect for my wife and I on our first trip to Hawaii! We prefer hotels with a kitchen to help save on the cost of food. We bought local fruits and ice cream at the grocery store, and we ate leftovers from our nice meals on the patio for lunch. The location was perfect--away from the bustle of Waikiki, but close enough to walk there in a few minutes. The free parking was extremely nice after we would drive to the North Shore or away from the Waikiki district. The staff were extremely friendly, and the room was very clean. We stayed in a deluxe studio with a mountain view, and absolutely loved it! If we are fortunate enough to come back to the islands, we would definitely stay here again.

If you are looking for 5-star amenities and comfort, this is not your place. But if you are budget-minded, value some extra space, enjoy a full kitchen and want to feel the Spirit of Aloha, then this is the place for you.

We are staying as a family of three. We got the 1br suite. It's great to have a door that closes between the parents and kids on a vacation. The kitchen has helped us save not only food costs but also the hassle of waiting in line for a table. We did not anticipate how crowded Waikiki would be and as introverts, that kitchen has really saved us. The hotel is within walking distance to the beach.

Staff were all friendly and accommodating. We felt secure as far as COVID related concerns. During COVID you have to reserve the pool ahead of time and it's only one family at a time, which was actually really nice.

Pros
Lots of space (650 sq ft)
Affordable
Walkable to Waikiki beach
Quiet compared to other parts of Waikiki
Good social distancing protocols
Full kitchen
Door to separate bedroom and living area
Easy to get to by car
Free parking
Our suite has a jacuzzi tub
Resort fee is cheaper than some others

Cons
Older decor
Bathroom light makes an annoying sound (but we found a camping lantern that we have been using instead so it's fine)
Kitchen is minimally equipped - no seasonings, oil, one pot and pan and one spatula, no knives but there are eating dishes/utensils
Pool is small

Overall I'd say this is a great place to stay for a budget conscious family. It's low key, which we appreciate. If you come to Hawaii expecting to stay at your resort the whole time, you probably won't enjoy this place. But if you want to experience more than your hotel, it's a great option.

10th floor suite smoking room. Clean room, pool, hotel and courteous service. No frills such as room service, restaurant, bar, snack/convenience store, but the room has everything you need. Walking distance from beach, shopping and night life. If you’re wanting to explore and experience Oahu versus a hotel, this is the place to stay.

We recently stayed at Ilima Hotel for eight nights. It was perfect match for us. It is not a fancy new hotel , however, price is very reasonable, location is great, five minutes walk to Duke Waikiki and all the shops, room is clean and well maintained, full kitchen, and free parking! I think it’s one of few if any hotels in that area which offers free parking . It works on first come first serve basis, however we never had a problem to find a spot. We enjoyed pool and sauna after long day around the island. Hotel personnel was very nice and friendly. We had cleaning service daily, and they did a good job, although we are not that messy. The only thing, that we were not able to get , is a higher floor with better view. But it was’t available for studio room that we booked. Not a big deal anyway, we spend mostly of the time out.
I would definitely recommend it !

Two blocks off the strip, next to the canal. More quiet than the beach or on Kuhio. Traffic in Waikiki is quite loud
Some find the rooms tacky, or outdated or funky. We loved it. $120 per night in Waikiki for a really large room ith full kitchen (fridge, stove, sink, dished, cutlery. A great view up into the mountains overlooking the canal. Small pool and private parking. Best of all the staff. Without going into the long story, Jay, the asst mgr. is THE BEST

We chose this hotel because it was one of the very few hotels with free parking. Parking is first come first served and could possibly be very busy at peak times - although we had no problem and managed a space each day.
Only 10 minute walk from shops, restaurants and beach.
Our studio was spacious, comfortable with a fully fitted kitchen and a balcony.
very friendly welcoming staff.
Excellent value for money - although we think we got the best value by booking directly online with the hotel. Even the response to the booking was very friendly and welcoming - a good start!
Would definitely return to the Ilima.
