Our corner in paradise

Review of Kalaekilohana
Reviewed May 12, 2024
Don't know where to start. Let's start with our hosts. Kenny & Kilohana are the most gracious and generous inn owners who have not just become friends but family. They are around when you need them and disappear and leave you in your own little corner of paradise. The accomodations are spacious and well appointed. Easy to open windows with screens so you can sleep with the windows open. Your own balcony and plenty of fluffy pillows. Loved the en suite bathroom with rain fall shower head, big bard of soaps and plenty of towels for our entire stay. We never had to ask for anything. A fridge/laundry area on the 2nd floor where the 4 rooms are is very convenient. The inn is off the beaten path but cños enough to nearby natural wonders including the cliffs of Kalae, Punalu'lu black sand beach, and about 45 minutes to Volcano National Park. There's also horseback riding which we didn't and golf at Discovery Harbor minutes away. The course is not in good shape, but they're trying. Greens need some major TLC. What the course lacked, the staff and local members made up with their open arms and friendly service. For Hawaii it was downright inexpensive to play here and quick. 9 holes in 90 minutes. Bar drinks and light fare were very reasonable. Whenever we wandered afar we made sure to be back in time for dinner. Kenny is a chef, although he humblly may deny it. Every meal, breakfast or dinner, was a feast and all home grown or fished from local waters. Salads, fruits, grains were all served in ways we never imagined. Whether we ate in the parlor or our on the porch it was delightful. The homemade ice cream, macadamia nut crusted cookie/tart and the wheat english muffins with fresh guava jelly and accompanied by fresh coffe in our own french press pot every morning was heavenly. Plenty of snacks, water, soft drinks and wine were always available and on the house. There is no other place like the Kalaekilohana in all of Hawaii, and very few in the world. Peaceful and a perfect place to relax, refresh, recharge your battery or just do nothing. Our after dinner conversations on the porch with Kenny and Kilohana were warm and just the right finishing touch to a beautiful day. We will be back next year. 5 nights was just enough. Mahalo to Kenny and Kilohana for a memorable stay and stress free vacation. Aloha!

Welcoming, clean, quiet, comfortable, a great location with excellent breakfast and dinner (if you stay). Kilohana‘s and Kenny’s friendly service and great house all contributed to making our first trip to Hawaii remarkable and memorable.

Room tip: Great location for black sand beach, green sand beach and Volcano National Park.

Kilohana and Kenny were wonderful hosts! They had great information on places and things to see, and practical advice on the best way to schedule our day trips. A plethora of knowledge on Hawaiian history and culture. Kilohana even arranged an impromptu visit to a small local coffee plantation (very interesting). The location is beautiful and centrally located to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kona, and Hilo. The room was large and comfortable with an en-suite bathroom that was stylish and clean. A healthy gourmet breakfast was provided each day with the option to join them for another gourmet meal for dinner. The highlight was spending each evening on the lanai discussing the day and meeting the other guests! Highly recommended!

AMAZING...from start to finish. Kenny and Kilohana know how to run a BNB...one always greets you when you return, the fridge is stocked with beverages, the breakfasts include things like home smoked marlin or pork, or house made sausage and at least 5 kinds of unusual tropical fruits, home made English muffins, home made buckwheat pancakes...I could go on an on.
The four rooms in this BnB (which was built by Kenny and Kilohana) do not have walls that adjoin so it is quiet and the rooms are well appointed and immaculate. There is not a dent, scratch or ANY maintenance needed any place in the Bnb.
A huge plus is dinner which is divinely prepared with wine and a chance to chat with folks in the other three rooms. After the plated dinner all adjourn to the front porch to chat with the ever affable and amazing chef Kenny and the sweet, kind spirited Kilohana--both help you to prepare for your next day offering superb tips on where to go and what to do that you won't find in any guidebook.
This is the gold standard for a BnB....I am a critical person who can always find a better way to do something, but this was perfection!!
The location was perfect and quiet and close enough to Volcanoes Park to make a good day of it.

Kenny and Kilohana are thoughtful hosts and do everything they can to make you feel comfortable at their Country Inn. We spent two nights there and had dinner as there are few restaurants nearby. As this was the end of our holiday we had already seen much of the Island but one of the great advantages of staying here is the "local's" tips and advice K&K can give you. Other guests took day trips to go snorkelling and to go to the Volcano National Park.
The Black Sand beach (turtles galore) and the Green Sand beach (more difficult to access) are both nearby and towels and beach chairs are available to borrow.
This is a quieter part of Hawaii Island and the Inn is at some elevation so it is noticeably cooler than at sea level.
Although each couple has their own table for breakfast and dinner it is easy to chat with other guests—something we enjoy.
So at the end of a pretty busy 2 weeks, a little explore locally then relaxing on the lanai suited us perfectly. Thank you Kenny and Kilohana for sharing your lovely home!

The Kalaekilohana Inn and Retreat was wonderful. The rooms are spacious with private bathrooms. Their are plenty of outlets for electronics. The windows have side vents with screens so we slept with them open with nice cool breezes. Chef Kenny was an excellent chef using all local, fresh ingredients. Kilohana taught us how to weave and talk story. They were gracious and friendly hosts. We highly recommend them. Ka'u is a beautiful side of the island not to be missed and they are perfectly located by South Point, Papakolea Green Sand Beach and the state park.

Room tip: Kilohana and Kenny can provide you with places to eat and explore.
