My companion and I rented a room with a king-size bed as well as a balcony overlooking Penobscot Bay. From the warm and gracious check-in process, to the immaculate room, to the generous-sized balcony, everything was ship-shape and Bristol fashion. This is not to be taken for granted on the Maine coast, where some proprietors think an ocean-view room gives them cover to slack off on things like controlling mold in the shower or attending to peeling paint or wallpaper. None of that here. And the view of the Bay? Rapturous, even for this region. Next time, we plan to try out one of the nearby cottages.

This was the perfect place for us. We stayed five nights in a one bedroom cottage and it was great having the room to spread out. We had our small dog and the grounds were good for walking her. Our cottage was clean, the bed was comfortable and we loved having the deck to enjoy the late afternoons. Ed and Dora were very accommodating and helpful in navigating the area. This property is truly a gem.

We have stayed, usually, for a week, in the past, at Colonial Gables. There are about 50 cabins of different sizes and amenities. Ed keeps the property and the cabins well maintained. The staff is courteous and helpful. We had a problem with one of the television sets and called Ed, at the front desk. Literally, in a couple of minutes Hoyt appeared at our cabin to correct the problem with the television set. He corrected the problem and instructed us if the problem recurs to call for assistance. Fortunately, he corrected the problem. Jim, the Facilities Manager, seems to know the property and each cabin very well. Dora, the front desk clerk is very personable. She is very accommodating and helpful.

The cabin we stayed in was a medium size cabin with plenty of room to spread. There is an extremely large bedroom with two queen beds and a bathroom. Also, there is an eat-in kitchen and a living room. Our favorite feature is the all glass enclosed sun room facing the water. The bedding was comfortable. The kitchen is a full-size kitchen.

Colonial Gables is located on the east side of Route 1 north a couple of miles north of downtown Belfast.
