Top score for this property for charm and comfort, despite some quirks.
The welcome was very warm and the gentleman (owner?) in reception provided very good advice on where to eat that night.
We stayed in one of the cottages which offered a lovely sense of privacy, and had a nice view out over Belfast Bay/Penobscot Bay. The cottage was well equipped with full-size fridge, hot plates (no oven), microwave, dishwasher. The beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was small but clean and functional. This property is older but the level of comfort more than made up for any possible shortcomings due to the age of the building. The cottage had opening windows and was very quiet, so it afforded one of the best night's sleep we had during 8 weeks in Canada and USA.
The property is located between Belfast and Searsport. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance though for variety of choice, as well as access to the hotel itself, it is best to have a car.
Highly recommended

First, the cabins and the property are well maintained. The grass is mowed and the garbage is picked up nightly. The cabins are very clean. There is a variety of cabins on the property. Last time, we stayed in a two bedroom cabin. This year, there were no two bedroom cabins available. Therefore, we stayed in a one bedroom king cabin. The cabin was in good working order. We did not encounter any problems with the cabin.

There was a large television that covered most of the wall in the living room. The living room was was an average size room. There was a dining table in the corner of the living and two windows. There was a couch and a chair in the living room. The kitchen was a narrow area with a microwave and a two element countertop cooking device. There was an extremely small refrigerator. The bedroom was comfortable and had sufficient space. The bathroom was large. Also, there were two sliding glass patio doors: one in the living room and another in the bedroom.. Virtually all cabins have a view of the beach. A great asset is the full covered patio deck along the side of the cabin facing the beach.

We enjoyed staying at the cabins at Colonial Gables and will, most likely, return, again, next year.

There is a great ocean view, however you need to be outside on the back deck to see it. The inside chairs and table, and bed view the road. The bathroom privacy window, deck door and the closet area have the sea view.
The lack of cleaning from previous pets in the room was the biggest problem. If you travel with a pet this is a great place. However we do not. The room smelled of previous wet pets. There was hair all over the bedspread and floor leaving an oily feel and fur on anything that came in contact. If you have allergies this would not be a good place to stay.
We decided to change motels to a different one in Belfast.

Shortly after the property cleaning crew finished turning over the cabin, we checked in and did a thorough Covid cleaning and sanitizing of the cabin before we brought our stuff in.

We woke in the morning to find mouse droppings on the floor and kitchen area countertops. To managements credit, they refunded us the night and were gracious in canceling the balance of our reservation. But that is as far as I am willing to go with good will. I am sure the cleaning crew knows of the issue and if they did not inform management, that is on them. If they did inform management, this falls on the shoulders of management. My wife and I have been going to Colonial Gables for over 25 years, she has been going even longer, since she was a child. Every year, it is something; septic system backing up, carpenter ants, wasps, chipmunks coming up through holes in the shower floor, water heater issues, refrigerators not working, broken screens in doors and windows, leaking roofs that required pots, pans and bowls to catch the drops and on and on.

Management has been making improvements over the years but it seems that they may be losing ground to the ravages of time and wear.

We have been more than patient, is it time to find another place?

Over Labor Day weekend we were unexpectedly stuck looking for place to stay by the ocean and found Colonial Gables online. We contacted them and were able to book 4 days at a cottage right on the water. It was great. We walked the beach and my wife was able to launch her kayak right from the cabin. The cabin was fresh and clean and had everything we needed. We were in cabin 42 right at the shore, and the other cabins all were facing or viewing the ocean and within easy reach. It would be a great place for kids, and we saw many families there while we were visiting. Belfast has become a very pleasant and clean city, with interesting history and architecture, some nice shops and places to eat. We also walked the rail trail, which is terrific. The Colonial Gables folks were professional and a pleasure. We can highly recommend it.

I specifically chose to stay here because they had waterfront cottages. Based on the pictures that the management had put on their website it looked clean and fairly kept up. I understand wear and tear as well as staffing shortages. Our cottage was quaint but lacked ambience. The bedroom, which had 2 queen beds, were set up so that one bed's foot area faced the other bed's foot area. The beds were not made up very professionally and the bedding was old. In Fact, all the furniture was old. I didn't mind that so much because we had a unit that was right on the water. What I did mind was that there were mismatched dishes, only 2 spoons, and it worried me that the management asked people to wash their own dishes and put them away, no dishwasher, which always worries me that the previous people were not as conscientious as others. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and I know that the cost to upgrade, remodel and have housekeeping is high.

Colonial Gables is a cute cottage community nestled in the outskirts of Belfast. Our cottage had a beautiful, clear view to the ocean. Just steps from the beach, it was very easy access. The beach area has a bit of sand, but is mostly rocky as the tide goes out. The cottages are pet friendly and there are dogs everywhere on the beach! There is giant chess, ping pong, shuffle board, and horseshoes on the premises. Unfortunately, no cornhole. Our cottage had a small, full kitchen, a nice big open sitting area, a small bathroom and a nice bedroom. The couch also pulled out. There was only one small mirror in the bathroom, so pack extra if you need more. There is wifi, but very spotty depending on what cottage you're staying in. However, it does reach to the beach! Would definitely stay here again!

Quaint resort with motel rooms at front and various size cottages on the bayfront property. Our cottage was clean and included a king bed, table with 2 chairs, shower/bathroom and kitchenette with 2 burners, microwave, coffee maker and small fridge/freezer plus dishes/utensils. Staff was friendly and if there's something you don't have in your cottage inquire. We borrowed a lobster pot & utensils for an enjoyable lobster boil one evening. It's a homey, family friendly resort with a playground, horse shoe pits and evening bon fire.

Small housekeeping cottages with cable TV, free WiFi, a two burner cook top, a microwave, coffee maker, toaster, small fridge and a small sink. Comfortable beds and pet friendly so you can bring your dogs or cats. You can literally just disappear here for a few days and enjoy the surroundings or simply stay put and enjoy life from the front porch. Also great if you are working remotely online .... get a laid back change of scenery and still get work done. We stayed here two nights in May, 2021 booked another three night stay in June 2021.... we’ll book a full week for June 2021.

I use a walker. Is the terrain suitable for my getting close to the water?

Toronto, Canada91 contributions726 helpful votes
I agree with Linda O, I would drive down as close as possible, which will be close to the water. When I visited there wasn't a solid path all the way to the water. If your comfortable using your walker in the sand, you'd be able to get very close to the water
