Right Across the Street from Freight Train

Reviewed May 7, 2018
This hotel itself is neither here nor there -- clean, small lobby that is not cozy, rooms are sparse; I had a room with a table for a desk, and simple chairs instead of an office swivel chair, etc. It's clean. Workers friendly. The breakfast is nothing to speak of; the room was empty every morning! Price was cheap -- $65 to $75 a night except one night when it was $138 because it was booked almost full. I had a 5-day stay ahead of me, doing work at the local Navy base -- and I almost was going to switch hotels -- until the first night -- at 4am in the morning, I was awoken by the horn of a freight train. And then again at 5am -- like an "I Love Lucy" episode.
Turns out the Freight train tracks are right across the street from this hotel. As a fan of freight trains -- I LOVED THE PLACE. Location, location, location. And you are close to the water -- aka jump in your car and in a few minutes drive you can be by the lake. In walking distance is a terrific local eatery Flanagans, open all night with Terrific pan pizza (esp w jalapinos & mushrooms!). I'd go back to North Chicago just for their pizza.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 5 days in this hotel -- albiet I was out most of the time -- either working or in the evenings, taking trips down to Chicago to see the Cubs at Wrigley or blues at Rosa's. And the Freight train horn didn't interrupt my sleep after that first morning. But I heard it regularly in the evening right after work or just before bed.
I could have switched hotels to a nice Holiday Inn Express with lovely lobby inland -- but then I'd be in just another strip mall for the trip. This one had Location, Location, Location -- grit & the sound of Freight trains at night!! You do NOT get that everywhere.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for my sons graduation from Navy boot camp. It is conveniently located close to the base. Our room was clean. Very dated inside the rooms/hotel. Parking was adequate. The breakfast is useless. Don’t waste your time. To be fair though people have been known to take everything that they put out. Cheap low life people think that just because they stay there and pay they get to take everything. So I can’t blame the hotel for not having a good breakfast. The last person in our room even took the garbage can! Really? Those people leave a bad name for the military. The desk clerk even said he guesses that is the military way. We told not true at all. I retired after 20 years and never did anything like that. Anyways if you stay here for graduation be aware of the long line at the gate in the morning to get on base. Be there at 6:00am. There is a shuttle service that drives to the local hotels to pick up people. It cost $12 round trip. It is worth it. They start at 6:00am. They come around about every 1/2 hour. It is a slight walk from where they drop you off but again it is worth it. So if you are doing a one maybe two nighter this hotel will work. Just don’t expect much.

I went to book this room 5 weeks in advance to attend my son’s graduation from Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes. I was just looking for a basic room to lay my head down after a long drive. The Days Inn Web Page advertised $45.90 per weekday night. When I went to book for a Thursday, I was quoted a regular price of 139.00, but they were going to give me a special “navy” price of $110.00. When I asked why the price almost tripled, I was told because it was Navy Graduation. Keep in mind, the weekday price for this 2 star hotel is $45.00 M-W, Sunday is 51.00 …but Thursdays go to 139.00!! I get supply and demand and they can set their pricing at whatever they want. I also think this is disgusting. They are taking advantage of our Military families. There is no way a two star hotel should be charging over a hundred dollars on a Thursday night. I am asking my Trip Advisor friends to boycott this hotel and Wyndham hotel group. I found several other hotels (3 star) for under $100.00.

Very convenient for families who are attending Navy graduation. It's about 1.5 miles away from the base. For sailor families, I personally would recommend to take the shuttle from your hotel and it get you in the graduation faster.

Staffs: there wete some who were very friendly and some were not!

Housekeeping: Not very likely to recommend. If you want your room to be clean you have to let them know, otherwise, they won't clean your room.

Surrounding: Safe and Quiet

Proximity to other places was very accessible especially when you want to visit downtown.
Though, during our stay there was an isolated case of next door room neighbor ruckus.

Overall, I recommend this place!!!
