A pleasant and relaxing stay

Review of Hotel Colorado
Reviewed Feb 5, 2022
Our room was spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed the fact that the TVs (which we didn't watch) were hidden away in cabinets and didn't interfere with the room's antique vibe. We enjoyed the old water-filled radiators. Despite their occasional hissing sounds, they were quick to warm the room and added some moisture to the dry Colorado winter air. It was quite cold when we visited: in the low 20s during the day and single digits at night, yet we were comfortable in the room.

Loved the unique Colorado history associated with the hotel and all the photographs of President Teddy Roosevelt and his visits to the hotel.

We were most interested in visiting the famous hot springs in Glenwood. The Hotel Colorado is across the street from the Glenwood Hot Springs and admission is not included, but you can get a package deal through the hotel, or you can buy a day pass at the Hot Springs. You get a 10% discount to Iron Mountain Hot Springs through the hotel, but you have to book it online.

Enjoyed some great barley wine and bison burgers at Glenwood Canyon Brewpub a short walk from the hotel.

UPDATE: I'm updating my review after speaking with Michael Provenzano, the Director of Front Office. How he handled this situation and our stay was MORE than gracious. He did not request I update this, I feel obligated to. He took my feedback seriously and has addressed it with the staff. He also let me know they are renovating and generously offered us to come back post-renovation (later this year) to re-do our experience. This was ABOVE & BEYOND any hotel I've stayed at and I cannot express enough gratitude when most do not care, it means a lot that he took the time to rectify our situation. We can't wait to see the post-renovation historic Hotel Colorado! Thank you, Michael!

Original Review: Let me start by saying, everyone, we encountered at the hotel was nice. Was booked into 328 (maybe 326) rooms first. Was supposed to be 2 kings, was 1-king and 1-queen. TV in king room did not work. Having a balcony was cute, except there were giant gaps to the outside underneath the door. There's historic and then there's not keeping items in working order. Ended up getting a mouse in the room on the first night as well as a whole colony of bugs from the window/door gaps, The hotel front desk was nice but the first response was 'It's cold, I think there are mice down here in the lobby too"... I had to ASK to get housekeeping and explain why... as the mouse was on the bed and running around the room. Maintenance was super nice, they came to fix the TV (the previous guest stole the power cord), and put down a sticky trap for the mouse, explaining this was 'all he could do'.

We ended up deciding to switch rooms. Only available was 4 queen (2 room) hotel desk didn't explain that it was connected by a bathroom, and missing a refrigerator/microwave before moving... Disappointed it didn't have a microwave/refrigerator and we weren't told this before moving. The second room (310) was in just as good of shape. Paint peeling, lack of upkeep in the bathroom, just general lack of updating even simple items like caulk, or the fact that the bathroom shelf was basically hanging on by a thread on the wall. Doors stuck and didn't open/shut properly for the bathroom. Lamp fixtures falling apart. After the move, I realized I forgot my cell phone charger in the first room, key still worked (only about 1-hr after the move) went back to the original room, the charger was there, but they had already REMOVED THE MOUSETRAP. They didn't even catch the mouse for the next person who rented the room!!! It was like they did it just to shut us up and didn't actually care about catching the mouse.

Overall, had I paid $120/night it might have been doable (actually that's giving it more credit than it deserves). I could have stayed down the street and paid $80/night and had a better room. We paid ALMOST $900 for 2-nights. Outrageous for the dilapidated state of the rooms. Will NOT be staying here again and will be telling everyone I know the facts of our stay.

The hotel was a unique experience, the atmosphere is one of a kind. But I have to say the staff make the visit enjoyable. A memorable staff member was alta-jo. She was very friendly and helpful , professional and knowledgeable about the area as I was new to the Glenwood area. She was a great waitress! Might I even dare say beautiful! Anyways, wonderful hotel, great staff, I'd keep her around!

Staying at this historic old hotel has been a long time on our 'to do' list. For our 30th anniversary we decided to take Amtrak to Glenwood Springs and make it happen. We weren't disappointed as Christmas decorations were up and the place was tastefully done to the max. The hotel lobby during the holidays are second to none, they go all out with a world class job of decorating.

Staff was helpful, friendly, and really could not do more to accommodate us. The rooms and hallways were period themed, I felt like I was visiting the wild west. A very comfortable bed and the bathrooms were spotless clean.

The only downside was not having complimentary morning coffee, my wife had to trek down to the coffee shop and buy our morning coffee. Not a really big deal, yet it would have been a nice touch, as would have been an in-room microwave and fridge. They still use the original steam heat cast iron radiators, which are quaint and work great (for sure you won't be cold!) but with limited control over temperature. There is no room air conditioning, but we were there in winter so I can't say how well open windows work in summer, though I have not read any negatives. Keep in mind this is a very old hotel that retains a lot of its original charm, these minor inconveniences are the price one pays for a taste of a long gone era. Overall we were glad we stayed here, the history is unreal dating back to 1893.

Of interest: Its a short walk to both Glenwood hot springs (largest pool in the world!) right across the street, and also the Yampah vapor caves, we love both places. Great dining is just a little further walk over the new pedestrian bridge as is the Amtrak station.

Thank you so much for your feedback, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us! Please know that we do have microwaves and refrigerators available upon request, but do not keep them in the rooms simply due to the fact we are getting ready to renovate and the amount of space they consume in some of our smaller rooms. We apologize for the inconvenience, but are still happy that you enjoyed our decorations and the service you received. If there was anything else at all that we could have done to make your stay better please do not hesitate to let us know. Thanks again for staying with us!

Amazing hotel and great experience. Staff is friendly, rooms are clean and gorgeous, hotel history is fun! The beds are pretty stiff, which made it hard for myself and my husband to sleep but we prefer more cushiony mattresses.
The bar and restaurant food was absolutely delicious! And wait staff was very accommodating and quick to respond.
Before we checked in we did ask the staff if there were things we could do in town while we wait for our room to be ready and they said ‘just skiing and snowboarding’ which was a bit underwhelming of a response. We did some googling after and found the caper caves, hot springs, downtown area to walk around, adventure park…etc.
overall experience was amazing and definitely will be back!
