Surprising!

Reviewed Sep 15, 2021
I live in L.A. and have passed La Jolla on the way to downtown SD, dozens of times. La Jolla always seemed 'far away' from attractions and, in my mind, hotels there seemed much more expensive than comparable hotels in downtown L.A.

Staying at this hotel has proved that:
a. It's not terribly far from attractions
b. It's not prohibitively expensive. (Maybe, because of the pandemic, prices are artificially low?)

First, let's talk about the condition of the hotel. It's rated 4-stars and all that means is that it has a lot of amenities -- ballrooms, pool, tennis courts, etc. But most people think "luxury' when they see 4-star and, in this case, the property falls short. In terms of the appearance of the room and even the public areas, I'd rate it at 3-stars (like a solid Holiday Inn). From the moment you drive up to the uninteresting front entrance to the mind-numbing tans and browns everywhere (even in the pool area), this is a hotel with 3-star decor.

When you add in the condition of the rooms, it supports the 3-star assessment. We had 2 rooms which appeared to have updated baths in them but there are remnants of the pre-updated condition,e.g., the old faucet handles on the tub/shower. The furniture looks distressed which could be deliberate or a signal that it's been beat-up over the years. In either event, the distressed look doesn't gibe with the rest of the decor.

Bottom line: the rooms are not horrible; they're decent but they're not 4-star. The main feature of the hotel is its location and, for us, the peace and quiet associated with a hotel which overlooks a massive golf course is a big plus. All of the rooms have SOME view of the course and all are 'away from the street' so there is no ambient noise most of the time, especially during sleeping hours (a big plus for us -- no ear plugs!)

The pool is quite large but I found its modest depth (about 5 feet at the deepest and very shallow at the other end) disappointing as I am someone who enjoys swimming laps. If you're just going to stand in the pool or dangle your feet, it would be less of a problem. Strangely even though the pool deck overlooks the golf course, you cannot see it from most of the deck since, once you sit down, the walls of the pool area block the view.

In all, staying here was peaceful, affordable and fairly convenient.

I honestly wouldn’t recommend staying here . The location is beautiful but it’s too expensive for poor service and amenities. I would have thought being an expensive hotel it would be nicer but I was completely wrong

I don’t feel it was worth the amount we paid. The hotel room felt outdated, We paid extra for the view and it was subpar. Very small balcony with just a side view of the ocean/golf course, the rest was blocked by another building. Check in staff was amazing but that’s all. Hotel room cleanliness was subpar as well, with my allergies acting up only while in my room. Elevator was suspicious and jerky. And parking should be included if you’re a paying guest for the night. Speaking of which, the garage was extremely dirty and smelled like vomit the whole time we were there. Hilton has a brand, and guests expect a certain level of service and cleanliness that was lacking in this facility. I may switch over to Marriott in the future based off my experience here

Saying that this hotel is right next-door to Scripps Green Hospital, we decided to stay here the night before my husband‘s surgery to make a 5 AM check in a little easier. Guest check-in staff were wearing masks. We have not seen mask on any other staff at this point. Bellman and concierge, no masks, room service, no masks, staff in hallways, no masks. Valet, no masks! The guy getting in multiple cars all day long is not wearing a mask. Let that sink in.

It states staff will being wearing masks in public areas. Not true.

Super disappointed in Hilton, I’ll be leaving early and forfeiting my money.

Hi Vanakate,

Thank you for taking the time to share a review of your recent stay with us. I hope that your husband's surgery went smoothly and that the road to recovery is easy. I sincerely appreciate your review as it alerted me to the fact that our signage was not updated with our recent policy changes following local and state health guidance. Currently, if a team member has been vaccinated, we allow them the option of wearing a mask throughout their shift. I have worked directly with our communications team to update our hotel signage immediately so that our hotel policies are clear and transparent with our guests, and so that all who enter know that their safety is our top priority. I hope that you will allow us the chance to host you again someday.

Sincerely,

I had dried up dirty towels pushed back with the shower curtain from previous guest, toys on the floor in front of slider and bugs (3big ones) climbing up the wall during the night. I just question how good was the room really cleaned.

So I get it...It's the covid era and not everything is totally back to normal- but, this hotel costs a lot of money for what you get. The bad juju started when we pulled up to check-in. The valet was disinterested and really wasn't attentive. He ended up taking our car after I stared at him while he was playing with his iWatch for half a minute. The gentleman who helped us with our bags was very friendly and gave us a low down of the room. Front desk was fine as well. The rooms are dated and smell musty. The rooms are dark (especially the corner rooms), furniture is dated, and their are stains all over the walls, bathroom, and bedroom. A $32 a day resort fee seems a little bit much. The gym was ok but again it was musty and humid.

My biggest complaint is when we got our car back after we checked out. There was literally a colony of ants crawling on our car. Look, I get it, you can't control nature per se but at least waive the vallet fee or help me spray off the ants. The kid was disinterested and just stood there while I did what I could to get the literally hundreds of ants off my car. Needless to say the drive home was full of killing ants as they crawled on us.

So all and all, a very dated hotel, staff (minus the vallets) were ok. Not worth a $750 two day trip.
