It’s aight

This place looks like a condo straight outta the 70s. That said the staff is pleasant. Our room was ok. Great view from the restaurant for sunset. Things I didn’t like: tons of construction going on, the pool area closes at 7, $42 for parking. Best part: little comfy lawn chairs facing the beach for primo people watching.

This hotel promised to match a price we found on Expedia but actually charged us $100 per night more. We called to have them correct the price when the confirmation email price was wrong and were assured it would be corrected before we left on our trip. We also asked the desk clerk to confirm and correct the price when we checked in. We got verbal confirmation both times but should have asked for it in writing. Now they claim we agreed to the higher price and refuse to refund the $300+ we were overcharged. All this because we thought we were doing them a favor by saving them from paying Expedia a percentage.

We have been there before and would never have stayed there for the price they charged; it isn’t worth it. The hotel gets shabbier every year and the only thing they really have going is the location.

My daughter and I splurged for her birthday and each reserved a beachfront king room. We were so disappointed. The rooms are outdated and my screen door was broken and the drapes off the track. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. The first morning I told the front desk I had no hot water and she said she was not sure what she could do to help me. (I did eventually get hot water) The food at the restaurant was barely edible, cold and burned. The patio had a large column that obstructed the ocean view. Upon check out we discovered the original rate we were quoted was higher and we had an additional $170 in fees and taxes per night we were not aware of. Basically we rented two rooms for around $1800 per night. The third night we stayed in a beautiful ocean front 2 bedroom unit with full kitchen for $671 at the Pan Thai Inn. Definitely that will be our choice on our next visit which is in October of this year. When we checked out we tried to ask questions about the bill and the front desk said she could not help and would have management contact us- which no one ever did.

Room tip: Verify the full nightly cost including Fees and taxes.

We came her 1/20/24 for a wedding. The hotel is being renovated and they never told the wedding party this when they booked the block of rooms. Some of our party guests and family could not check in because the room had something wrong in it-flooding etc. Others checked in and had no heat and it was quite cold and rainy. Our room had missing tiles in the bathroom, old beat up furniture and stained carpet. We could not traverse the entire floor as part of the hotel had been partitioned off. My son's room flooded, the "honeymoon suite" door to outside shattered, cousins had no heat. Yet, it was still quite expensive and the $35 for parking was insane. The location is excellent but I would try the other hotels. Do not go here if you expect better than motel 6.

Room tip: Go to one of the other hotels that are maintained well for a resort experience. This hotel is falling apart and is not a good value.

Upsides: We love the location of this hotel- we walked to Birch Aquarium, the beach to the pier, downtown LaJolla via the cliff trail, and around LaJolla Shores in general. The staff is friendly and helpful, cheerfully extending our reservation when our flights were canceled. The pool area and hot tub close at sunset, but that reduces noise into the rooms. Our room- 321- was perfect- partial ocean view, overlooking the pool area, with a nice balcony. The restaurant on site serves a good breakfast. We would definitely stay here again.
Downsides: They appear to be in the midst of updating the hotel. Although the grounds are perfect, the structures are dated- the railings are several different materials, including some brown painted plywood. We assume these are replacing old structures and are temporary until renovations reach this area. There are a couple of closed areas being actively worked on. Our room itself is freshly painted and decorated in a beach cottage style.

Room tip: We are happy on the third floor. I would be unhappy with the first floor.

While this is an older building, it was one of the most enjoyable places to stay that we’ve ever been to. Had beachfront room with deck where you can sit and enjoy the ocean. At high tide, you could literally throw a stone in the ocean from your room.
Very nice layout with a courtyard that has ping pong tables, a fire pit area, and corn hole outside the bar. This would be great for families looking for a place to do some things without spending a fortune like at some many other places in San Diego.
Bar had great cocktails with views of the ocean out front and we want to shout out to the bartender Savanah for great service.
Pool was nice and the hot tub had very strong jets, which I love.
Another plus is they had e-bikes to rent, which were very fun and we used them to visit the Birch aquarium up the road.
Bed was comfortable, and yes the building and furnishings may be called “a bit dated” and yes, the “walls were thin” compared to a high end hotel, but no more so than a typical Best Western, IHG, or Choice hotel.
Sleeping with the deck door open a crack and listening to the waves break was heavenly. Hiking or biking just a hair down the beach offers some nice tide pools to explore at low tide.
Highly recommend.
