GOOD INFO FOR CURIOUS US TOURISTS!!! - WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!! JUNE 2021

Reviewed Jun 30, 2021
I just had the pleasure of spending a week on a breathtakingly beautiful island at a wonderful oceanfront resort. I want to share my experience and encourage anyone looking for an unforgettable getaway to consider this island and resort. I'm talking about the Coral View Beach Resort on the island of Utila. Utila is part of the bay islands off the coast of Honduras. Utila is not like anywhere that I have ever been. The best comparison that I could make is to compare it to Key West. Not modern-day Key West though. More like the Key West in the era of Ernest Hemingway, or the old Key West immortalized in Jimmy Buffet’s 1970s hits. Corporate tourism has not spoiled Utila, a little island of just over 4000 residents. In fact, the only national franchise on the island is one gas station. Everything else is privately owned. The island is very clean and safe. I have traveled through many places in the Caribbean that had a sort of "seedy" aspect to them. You won't find that in Utila. The locals consist of a mix between natives and transplants from the States. English is spoken fluently by nearly every single person I met on my trip. The island has a small downtown full of boutique restaurants, shops, and bars. The bars have specific events on certain nights, so there is always something exciting to do. Most of the bars are on docks overlooking the beautiful ocean. Not far down the road, in an area called Blue Bayou, is The Coral View Beach Resort. The Coral View has undergone a major renovation including a new pool to complement the existing one (which is the largest on the island) They have their own dive center and offer scuba certifications and fun dives. The hotel is quaint. The rooms are simple but clean and have good air-conditioning, showers with good water pressure and temperature as well as fast wifi. They have an indoor restaurant and also a huge deck overlooking the ocean and a private beach. The deck has a bar that serves the same menu as the restaurant as well as probably the best Pina Coladas you will ever have. If you are looking for a break from over-commercialized vacation spots, Utila, and specifically the Coral View is a must. The local people are very friendly. The staff at the hotel will not only guide you to the best nightspots but probably will take you there, hang out there with you, and introduce you to more people! Lastly, everything on the island is very affordable. My estimate is approximately 1/3 of the prices of a comparable US vacation. Hotel rooms are generally under $100, bar drinks range from around $2 to $4, and meals around $8-$12. Scuba Diving is also very affordable. Many people (like me) have Scuba Diving on their “bucket list” but never end up doing it because of the high cost in many other places. The Coral View Resort solves that problem by not only providing diving in one of the top-rated reefs in the world but also making it extremely affordable. If you don’t want to dive, you can snorkel through the reef. Snorkel equipment is included with the room as well as breakfast. As far as travel, there are flights from many US destinations to the island of Roatan, which is a short 45-minute ferry to Utila. The flight from Florida was just under 2 hrs. The ferry boat is reminiscent of the ferries on the Hudson River to NYC and costs around $30. I'm excited to share this experience because I feel like there are a lot of people looking for something different than a typical Bahamas or Mexico vacation. If that sounds like you, The Coral View Resort Utila is the place for you.

Had lunch here a few times. Food was great and the staff were friendly. Yesterday I had the Grand Baleada Platter. I had no idea what it was but it was recommended by the server. Wow, it was amazing. Heading back today for the SalvaVida loaded cheese fries. I also will be heading out to their new over the water bar. Great views!

I haven't stayed at the resort, but I frequently visit their bar to snorkel. I have snorkeled from many spots on the island and done a lot of diving too. Frankly, the snorkeling here is better than 90% of the dives I've done from this island (and don't get me wrong, I love diving here). The staff of the bar is friendly and they have a nice patio on the rooftop to watch the sunset. BUT THE SNORKELING!!!!!!! I have seen several eagle rays, lobsters, huge fish, small fish, long fish, colorful fish, squids, and more creatures than I could name. I always come back from snorkeling here with a smile on my face. I highly recommend checking out this reef!!

I stayed at Coral View Beach Resort for 10 nights in March 2019 and it was fabulous. I can not wait to go back to Utila and to Coral View! We flew into Roatan and then took the Utila Dream Ferry direct to Utila. Booking the ferry ahead of time (via their Facebook page) is highly recommended as you can by-pass the LONG customs line-up at the airport as they have your ferry trip co-ordinated with airport personnel.
At Coral View Tonia, her family and her staff were incredibly welcoming and did everything they could to make our trip an amazing experience! The snorkelling right out front is some of the BEST around the island. Breakfast was hot and freshly cooked each morning and it was served quickly with coffee and juice if you'd like it. The rooms are basic but comfortable and very very clean. Coral View is quietly set away from the busy and noisy Utila town but still easy to get in and out to by tuk-tuk ($4US in daytime, $6US at night each way) if you don't want to walk (20 mins) and do want to zip in and enjoy the fun, restaurants & shops of town.
At Coral View I stayed in the Penthouse room and my friend in a 3rd floor room. Both rooms were adequately sized. The bonus of the Penthouse is that it has it's own private rooftop deck that you can enjoy sunrise, sun and shade on during the day. We had lots of fun snorkelling with the Whale Sharks off of the Whale Shark & Oceanic Society research boat, we went to Water Cay with Tonia's son by dory boat, we rented a golf cart for a day to see more of the island and Tonia went above and beyond to organize a cooking class for us through a local island entrepreneur at Roxana's Island Cuisine when we asked if that was a possibility. All of it was amazing and I can't wait to return! Bonus: Coral View is just steps to the Blue Bayou Restaurant and Bar where you can have lunch or dinner, great drinks, amazing service and enjoy the fabulous sunset surrounded by diving pelicans on an endless dock. Don't miss out on the spicy beef plantain bowl, burger & fries and the fish and chips! All of it was incredible!

Room tip: The Penthouse is worth the extra money for the few extra steps! Plus you had better wifi up there than anywhere else on the resort!

We had a waterfront bungalow and it was very good. The view was great and the accommodation confortable
It is a good place to relax and enjoy the quiet Amed
Breakfast was included and it was good. Not impressive but acceptable
The hotel services were interesting. As an example cleaning was optional: they asked us everyday if we wanted to have to room cleaned or not that day. If the answer was yes, they cleaned. I was surprised by the question
Everything was very relaxed
