Much better than expected

Review of Hotel Tikal Inn
Reviewed Mar 3, 2023
This stay felt luxurious in the middle of the jungle.

Like other travelers, I chose to stay within Tikal National Park so that I could enjoy the ruins and the jungle at sunrise and sunset, without the tour groups. In my mind, the trade off was staying at a hotel over my usual budget. The Tikal Inn exceeded my expectations. Unlike others, I didn't think the food was overpriced or lackluster; I thought it was pretty good and reasonably priced, especially given how remote this area is.

We stayed in a bungalow in the garden area. It was exceptionally comfortable (fantastic bed and quality bedsheets), beautiful, and peaceful. There were 2 queen beds in the room, each with a mosquito net (which we didn't need, thankfully -- no mosquitos when we were there in February). Knowing that electricity was only available certain hours (no one should be surprised by this -- it's clearly explained in the hotel description) I had brought along headlamps and a camping lantern, but these were not necessary inside the room because the hotel provides a big, bright light with a rechargable battery.

Hot water is available 24/7 and shower water pressure was excellent. Purified water is of course provided by the hotel for drinking and brushing teeth.

Jessica at the front desk was awesome! Very professional, polite, efficient, and helpful. She arranged the sunrise tour for us and gave us all kinds of tips to help ensure we had a great stay. The hotel is lucky to have her!

Things to keep in mind: the park will NOT allow entry outside the hours of 8am-5pm without a guide, even if you have purchased the sunrise or sunset tickets. You can get a guide at the entrance to the park. We were quoted a $50 fee per group for a 2-hour sunset guide (5-7). Sadly, this somewhat defeats the purpose of wanting to get there early/late to avoid crowds, as you must be with a tour group to enter during these times. I recommend doing the sunrise and sunset tours (if you have to choose only one, do sunrise) but also explore the park on your own during regular hours, so that you can enjoy the silence and solitude among the majestic ruins.

I thought the museums were worth a short visit. The ceramic museum has stunning incense burners, jade-encrusted teeth, and other artifacts found at the site. The other museum has poster-size photos of different stages of the excavation.

This is a beautiful family run hotel. I was lucky that Jessica was at the front desk when I landed in Flores as I forgot to book the shuttle and taxis at the airport wanted to rip me off! Jessica helped me to find a cheaper transport as I arrived late. Jessica was very sweet and gave me a lot of wild life information, I can tell she loves animals as much as I do, she was very knowledgeable about where to watch birds and the ones that were migrating. She has seen pretty much every animal in the park and has lots of respect for them, unfortunately, not everybody is like that at Tikal. I slept in one of the bungalows in front of the pool and the bed was phenomenal, probably the most comfortable bed I have slept in a long time. The room was very spacious and comfortable as well; at the end of the hike to Tikal, it’s nice to refresh at the pool that you can easily share with the swallows who take baths there to refresh from the inclement heat!

I booked the sunset and sunrise tours at the hotel and my guide, Dixon, was pure magic, he is very spiritual and I could feel his connection with Tikal and it’s culture as well as with the nature that surrounds the site, he is very patience and let us stay to beat crowds and watch the starts at the end of the sunset tour which was a very fine detail and a highly of my visit. I loved my experience at Tikal Inn!

Room tip: The food isn’t good, try to eat somewhere else

This was our second visit to Hotel Tikal Inn and as wonderful as our first visit! My friend and I celebrated our birthdays by spending a few days here. This is not a fancy hotel but charming nonetheless. We had a roomy bungalow that was spotlessly clean and that opened onto a lawn where we could watch the comings and goings of various critters - spider monkeys, chachalacas, ocelated turkeys, pizotes, woodpeckers, etc.

Roxy, the manager and resident archeologist, took us on a fascinating tour to Uaxactun. Her encyclopedic knowledge provided us a comprehensive overview of the many aspects of this little-visited site. Both receptionist staff and servers were extremely cordial and helpful, too.

Staying here is a rare opportunity to experience nature in the jungle in relative comfort and ease. Staring at the night sky with its million stars, watching monkeys loop through the trees, hearing howler monkeys -- this is an experience that is hard to beat.

If you can go with the flow of wifi and electricity not being available 24/7, this is a great place to stay!

My wife and I recently traveled to Guatemala to visit the Tikal National Park and selected this Inn . There are limited options within the park to stay and we were fortunate to have stayed here. We were not looking for a “five star property “ and were more interested in accommodations that seemed to fit the setting in this amazing site. We were not disappointed with our selection. The staff at the Hotel Tikal Inn was simply among the best I’ve experienced . Simply put they went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable. From the waiters in the restaurant and the housekeepers everyone was helpful and hospitable. The hotel itself shows some age but thoroughly clean and in good operational condition. Don’t expect a diverse selection of entertainment on the television- there are none. But do expect a clean and friendly hotel that blends with its surroundings.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as part of an organised tour, on which I had no control over the accommodation. Before arriving I was dreading this stay, as I had heard the stories about only generator power for a few hours a day, no air conditioning, and not to mention that I have severe arachnophobia. On arrival I was pleasantly surprised, the reception area and restaurant were quite nice and the wifi worked well there. The lodge is located in the jungle so it's quite humid and there's wildlife on its doorstep, but this didn't turn out to be much of an issue, and the entrance of Tikal is 5 minutes walk away. When I stayed the electricity hours were 6-8 am, 12-2 pm, & 6-9 pm, but turned on manually rather than automatic so the times weren't exact. Wifi was available 24 hours in the reception area and it wasn't too slow. The pool and surrounding areas were nice and clean.

My room was basic but very clean and had the essentials. On entering my room a thorough search was done for any creepy crawlies, and only a couple of really really small ones were found. I think between guests the rooms are deep cleaned and sprayed with some sort of bug spray. Additionally there appeared to be no cracks or holes where anything could get into my room, all windows were completely covered with a transparent mesh and there was no gap underneath or around the front door. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were very clean. There were mosquito nets around all of the beds, which was great though I didn't really see any mosquitoes in my room (though it was a very nice precaution). The bathroom again was basic but had hot water 24 hours, no bath tub but a large shower, and a toilet that flushed properly. One issue was as it was so humid things didn't really dry properly such as towels or swimming costumes, but that's the reality of staying in the jungle. There was a lamp in the room which charged when the power was on and worked well when the power was off, saved having to do things by torchlight.

We had both breakfast and dinner at the hotel, breakfast was included but we paid for dinner. For dinner the food was good considering the facilities and not massively overpriced considering there weren't really any other options. The breakfast was table service rather than a buffet, they brought coffee or tea, fresh orange juice, and fruit to each person, and there was a choice of eggs or pancakes freshly made. Service was reasonably fast.

One thing worth mentioning about this place is how exceptional the staff were. They were so friendly and helpful, and their level of English was surprisingly good. The person who I think was the owner was around a lot tending to guests which was great.

Overall, if you want the jungle lodge experience and/or to stay very close to the site of Tikal then this is the place for you. Many of the limitations of this lodge are down to either the national park regulations (e.g. not being able to have power on the whole time), or the fact that Tikal is very remote and not well connected (e.g. to the power grid). Otherwise Tikal is accessible from Flores and easily doable in a day, as once we had finished touring the site we ended up back at the lodge for the whole afternoon with very little to do and no electricity (again, not Tikal Inn's fault).

Room tip: Most of the rooms are in hut form and are mostly the same.

Set in the Peten jungle close to Tikal the Tikal Inn offers the perfect opportunity to explore the region. Accommodations are clean and basic. Lots of hot water and though a limited amount of electricity is available it was perfect. No AC takes a bit to get used to but remember your in the middle of the jungle. Being a little uncomfortable is part of the adventure.
The grounds are well maintained and the swimming pool is wonderful. Wildlife strolls around the grounds unabated and drink service is available.
Good internet access.
The Tikal Inn’s staff is excellent. Both front desk people speak perfect English and are delightful people. The restaurant staff doesn’t speak so much English but try like crazy, and we never had any problems. The manager Roxi is a wealth of information which she loves to share. Nice lady and booked our guides and transportation, all of which were on time and efficient.
The hotel was essentially empty when we were there, so we asked Roxi if the chef could cook off menu, and surprise us with indigenous local meals. All of which were excellent!
I would recommend this hotel for anyone that understands that your in the middle of the jungle and not the downtown Toronto Westin.
