I can't speak for any of the other rooms except to say they are obviously bigger and better, but Room #4 was not a pleasant room to stay in. The biggest, most obvious problem is the shower—no enclosure, no shower curtain, nothing—and it could so EASILY be updated so that water doesn't go ALL OVER THE BATHROOM when you shower. You end up trying to squeeze into the corner and not move much in order to shower without making a mess. It's SO UNNECESSARY and NOT relaxing! There is a light fixture right by the shower, which is totally an electrical hazard! It's rusty from the shower, along with all the other metal objects in the restroom. AND, the ceiling is spattered with black mold. It's just a ridiculous excuse for a bathroom!
I added some comments to existing photos of the room, to describe some of the other issues. Keep in mind I am talking about Room #4 only, although for all I know, the other rooms have big problems also.
My impression is that the room may have been part of the office space in the past, and they carved a small room out of it. It just didn't seem like it was designed that way originally.
The staff was nice and helpful. No complaints there. They even brought us free bottles of Belikin (you also get two in the room fridge) while we sat outside the first night, due to the fact THE POWER WAS OUT ALL ACROSS BELIZE and it was HOT and PITCH BLACK in the room (windows slam down when you try to open them). Now this is something they don't tell visitors about! The power went out several times while we were there, and it's a big problem there that they need to freakin' fix. We went without dinner the first night, because everything was shut down.
Caye Casa, for their part, at least needs to invest in a generator. It was miserable there with no power. It went out so many times, my wife and I stopped even commenting on it to each other.
Ambergris Caye is kind of a dump. They also don't really tell you that. The poverty is in your face. The beaches along the side where Caye Casa is, are just rocky, trashed-out, undefined and sargassum-infested (that stuff SMELLED so bad!). But I'll refrain from getting more into Ambergris Caye here, since this is about our experience at Caye Casa. Except to say, there is more of a normal beach situation on the other side, at Secret Beach. If we went back, we would stay at one of the newish accommodations over on that side. There were some appealing-looking places over there, and we also enjoyed the funky vibe at Secret Beach.
I'm rating Caye Casa "Average" only because TripAdvisor calls two stars "Poor." Really, it's two stars for us as far as stars go, but "Poor" seems a little harsh. But maybe I am already forgetting how uncomfortable we were there and am not as unhappy today as I was in that room.
