Splendid resort with great food

Reviewed Jan 23, 2022via mobile
We stayed for eight nights at Sugar Bay and had a fabulous time in an oceanfront room on the ground floor, just yards away from the crashing waves. The beach is broad and rocks placed as a breakwater about twenty metres out make it very safe to swim. It's worth using a snorkel mask - most of the area is sandy, but there are some good fish to be seen sheltering in the breakwater rocks, and most incredible of all, turtles frequently swim in and glide peacefully around. As long as you let them be they are entirely comfortable with your presence!

The food was really very good - the buffet food about the best I have had for a buffet, with an excellent fish option always available lunch and dinner, and the roast meats in the evenings freshly carved a particular highlight. The staff are excellent, friendly and helpful, and Helen at the beach bar deserves a special mention for producing cocktails that were a definite cut above the rest! (If I had one recommendation - a better quality standard rum would be a real improvement.) Evening entertainment was good - especially Virgo on Sundays - though we would have preferred more Caribbean music and fewer 70s hits, but that's just personal taste.

The resort is set well back from the main road, behind very well-kept grounds; it feels secluded, though it's only about ten minutes walk at the absolute most to the Garrison, twenty minutes to Carlisle Bay, and about 45 minutes on foot (or under ten by taxi or bus, which are very frequent and cheap) to Bridgetown. It's really well located for getting around without a car. One can walk along the beachfronts out of the resort in either direction, eastwards to a boardwalk along from Hastings to Worthing that's great for an early morning walk or run.

We stayed here in January 2022 with Omicron in full flow back in the UK but felt so safe in Barbados and of course in this hotel. The staff are wonderful and do all they can to ensure you enjoy your stay. We were a big family group of 3 generations and there was entertainment and food to suit all of us. The beach is amazing and one of the best on the south coast as it has a breakwater creating a sort of lagoon which we could all enjoy without being knocked off our feet by the waves.

Myself and my wife had our sixtieth birthdays while staying here and our children had arranged with the help of the hotel a catamaran trip and then a celebration dinner back at Sugar Bay on the beach for us. It was a fantastic experience and will live long in our memories.

We will come back as returning guests because is was sooooo good.

The staff are all great, but some helped and served us particularly well;

All the reception and concierge staff,
Barry our dinner waiter on the Terrace,
Danell our breakfast waitress on the Terrace,
Helen, Damien and Nicholas at the bar,
Beverley our Celebration dinner waitress,
And Tamika our Celebration dinner Hostess.

Thank you Sugar Bay for a great holiday.

Room tip: The sea view rooms are great, but remember the waves are breaking all day and night!

We have one day left at Sugar Bay, Barbados before we have to leave, to travel back home to the UK. So, I thought this was the ideal time to write a review.

We are here as a couple in our 60's (but young at heart) :-) We are quite well travelled and before I go into any detail, my summary of Sugar Bay is "FANTASTIC".

From the moment we got here and throughout our stay, the Staff have been amazing. To me, the entire Staff are a huge part of the experience of being on holiday. There are so many names I could and should call out. But to be quite honest, it would be unfair on the others, who’s names I do not know. They have ALL been truly amazing .

From the staff in UMI who looked after a very fussy eater, twice. I will just say “bread”, you guys know who you are 😊.
Everyone at Colins, which is a fabulous place to have lunch. The staff at Sizzles, the wonderful Steak House. Reception, Breakfast staff, Concierge service who booked my Golf and Taxis. Last not least, not forgetting the Security guys, who removed my Golf Clubs I had left in Reception whilst I went to lunch, “for Security reasons”. Quite rightly so, but I did have a slight panic moment, but we had a laugh about it when they brought them back 😊

The main Dinner restaurant has a variety of food. Not a huge choice, but very good quality. As a “Fussy” eater, I had no problem and don’t forget, there are two other restaurants on site.

We had one issue with a light in the room, in was repaired within 10 minutes. !!
A slight negative, in the Terrace Restaurant, something should be done about the Pigeons. It is not a huge issue for me, but for some people, a very real issue.

As for Covid, I feel safer here than in the UK. They are strict, but polite if you do forget your mask. We went to Bridgetown one morning and EVERY small shop or big store had sanitisers and Temperature monitoring machines on entry.

So it’s a brief summary covering two weeks, but hope this is helpful to others. I will be booking again for next year as soon as I get back home. So, Sugar Bay, see you next time 😊

Room tip: We had room 120 which was a great position close to the beach if you are happy with a Ground Floor room

We had originally booked for November 2020 which was cancelled due to covid. Flew with Virgin, premium economy was excellent.

On arrival we were delighted to be upgraded to an oceanfront room which really made our holiday! Room was clean and spacious, very comfortable bed, good aircon, everything worked as it should, plenty of hot water, decent shower and mini fridge with bottled water.

We loved the laid back vibe of the hotel and staff as mentioned before are amazing. Food was excellent and varied at the buffet, we had 3 complimentary visits to the a la carte restaurants during our 11 night stay, we preferred Umi as the meal we had at Sizzle wasn’t great and the service was poor. We went to the snack bar on the beach once but most of the food was fried and not very appetising.

Bar service was good especially Derek, cocktails were great but I was disappointed with the sparkling wine which I mainly drink, it was a Spanish sparkling rose and too sweet and acidic for me. The mojitos were excellent!

The beach was wonderful, beautiful calm, clear water and plenty of sun loungers although this did not stop people reserving beds and cabanas at 6am, we are early risers and watched them from our balcony in the mornings! We didn’t use the pool as beds were always reserved before breakfast and we much prefer the beach.

The other reason I have not given 5 stars is that because the hotel entertainment started so early every meal with interrupted by extremely loud music. Under normal circumstances we would have really enjoyed listening to the music after dinner as some of the acts were excellent but we found it intrusive as it was impossible to have a conversation whilst eating.

To summarise, Sugar Bay is a lovely relaxed hotel on a stunning beach with great food and amazing staff. We wouldn’t return, preferring to try different hotels but I would recommend to friends and family.

On booking, the hotel was rated four star but how they achieved that is a wonder. It is an all inclusive hotel - something we are not usually keen on - but the choice when booking our trip was fairly limited. The site of the hotel is good on an excellent beach and the garden is quite attractive. However, the hotel has a tired look as did our room. The big let down was that the food was buffet style apart from when we ate in the Sizzling Steak restaurant with that meal being an even major, and I do mean major, let down.
A plus point were the staff who, for the most part, were friendly and helpful but that was about it.
We will be visiting Barbados again but will not be staying there!

We stayed at Sugar Bay for 10 days over Christmas and New Year. We were a family group of 10 ranging from 13 years up to 80 years young. All of us had the most wonderful holiday and I can't fault a thing. Everything was perfect but in particular I want to mention 2 things that really made the holiday. Firstly the friendliness of the staff from reception to the maids, to the restaurant to the beach/ waterspouts, every single person was incredibly friendly and always happy to have a chat with you. Everyone is so happy (easy in the sunshine I know!) but from the off we couldn't help but feel amazing because they just put you in a great mood. Secondly the food, oh my god the food. I always worry a little about all inclusive as it can become a bit 'samey' or bland but every day was different - the fresh fish and salads were delicious. I tried so many new things and the spread on New Years Eve was incredible - I wish I had taken photos! Thanks Paul and his team and thanks you to all at Sugar Bay. I will live off the memories until we can come back again.
