If you dive, fish or just want to get immersed in Fiji Culture a must do trip!!

Review of Oneta Resort
Reviewed 2 weeks ago
My wife and I just returned from 13 days at Oneta Resort and without question this resort is the most amazing place we have visited. Reasons:
1. The Fijian culture of community at least at Oneta is like nothing we and I have seen any where in the world. Mind you we have only been in ~50 countries mostly N/S American, Europe and a few in Asia but amazing. Just amazing!! We asked a few guests about this an said generally a culture of community, but Oneta is exceptionally better than they have seen
2. Coral reefs are bleaching free and the healthiest reefs we have ever seen and there is a huge abundance of sea life.
3. There is so much to do, dive, fish, hike, kayak, or just sit on the beach and relax.

Yes it is not as easy to get to as some resorts on more popular islands but it is 100% for sure worth the extra effort. No ifs ands for buts!!!

This was our second stay at Oneta. We enjoyed our first stay so much, we were obsessed with returning. But, we wondered if it would “live up” to our fond memories of the first trip? It did – in every way! The amazing setting, amazing people, and amazing activities were all still there. When you enjoy something so much, you really don’t want it to “change.” Oneta is one of those places. There is literally nothing we wish was different about our stay (except, of course, to stay longer)!

What we love the most about Oneta are the staff. They are a joy to interact with. They have so much to share about the culture of Fiji, about the natural surroundings, and about the wildlife. You don’t need to read up on the fish you will see, or about everyday life on the islands – the staff will be so happy to share their knowledge of, and love for, the wonderful place they call home. They will make you smile, every day, constantly. The will make you laugh. They will call you by name. They will consider you a friend. They will even make you cry – on the day you are scheduled to leave.

Oneta is a “full board” resort. You arrive and you transformed into the self you strive to be, but the pressures of life back home distract you from being. You don’t have to make many decisions at Oneta. Three meals a day are carefully prepared for you. The hardest thing to do is decide which area you want to snorkel in, where you want to fish, paddle board, or dive… You can even be taken to an island for the day that – trust me – you will be the ONLY persons on that island that entire day. No matter how spectacular your day (how many Mantas you saw, how spectacular the coral and fish were from your snorkel or dive, or how romantic your private island day was), you will always look forward to the afternoon return to Oneta and the communal dinner with the other guests. Hearing about their day, and getting ideas for your next day’s agenda, is a perfect way to end the day.

The setting is incredible - you're ten minutes from one of the largest reefs in the world. The facilities are wonderful and lovingly maintained. Oneta is very environmentally conscious and strives for sustainability and supporting the local communities thru the Oneta foundation. The management and owners are good people, having a wealth of knowledge about the natural surroundings and a keen knack for superb hospitality. But I want to leave with one last “shout” out to the entire staff – from the boat captains, dive masters and activity guides, kitchen staff, housekeeping staff, garden staff, maintenance, construction and other back office staff – and everyone… we can’t wait to return!

Bula vinaka!

For us, Oneta was perfection. Incredible dive crew and facilities, fantastic food, amazingly warm and genuine staff, world class reef etc. etc. Read the other reviews, on these points it is unanimous and already deserving of the "Best in Show" award.
Beyond what everyone quite rightly agrees upon, we were profoundly struck by the
role to which the owners, management and staff have committed themselves, with particular acknowledgement to Anne and Martin with whom we had the pleasure of dealing with directly, but which extends to every member of the team. The Oneta community acts first as steward of the land, the sea, the people and the future of Ono island, using their world class resort as a vehicle to accomplish that solemn commitment. From the ecocentric operation of the resort, the establishment of the Oneta Foundation as a way to work with village leaders to support the local community, the preservation and revitalization of the reef, to the way they educate and encourage participation by their guests in these pursuits, every aspect of the resort remains true to the foundational philosophy of the exceptional entity that is Oneta: Take care of the environment, take care of the community, take care of the guests, and the bottom line will take care of itself. Cheers Oneta, well done, we'll be back!

Flawless - the service. Warm and charming - the staff. Delicious - the food. Professional - the dive crew. Beautiful - the rooms and villas. Stunning - the reefs and marine life. Competent- the managers. Meaningful - the shared Fijian ceremonies. 5 Star - a term that doesn’t do the Oneta Resort justice.
Our only mistake in leaving the resort was leaving too soon and going to other resorts on other islands. They don’t compare in either beauty, service, environment or experience.
If you are looking for a place to go diving in Fiji, look no further. The Oneta is a superb choice, one you won’t regret.

If you like people but not a lot all at once, this is the place for you. The grounds are well maintained and the food is very good. The amount of guests are limited by the few bures that they have. The bures are spaced far apart and have plenty of vegetation around them to provide privacy. The bananas growing in the outdoor shower is a nice touch.

We didn't scuba dive, but heard rave reviews from the divers. We did quite a bit of snorkeling. The coral is in good shape with plenty of fish. We were coming back to the resort after a day of snorkeling and came across Manta Rays feeding. They stopped the boat and we snorkeled with them for about 15 minutes. There were about 25 of them swimming all around us. They have a lot dive and snorkel sites. Plenty of options for different wind and tide conditions to provide the best experience.

We enjoyed fishing the reef. Will definitely do more of that on our return visit. I also tried my hand at fly fishing. My guide Nui took me to a grass flat with patches of sand. There were blue fin trevally, trigger fish and bonefish there. They followed my fly but couldn't get them to eat. Next time I will be prepared with the correct flies.

I highly recommend the private island excursion. They bring you over to the island and prepare a nice place for you to relax. It has nice snorkeling there and you can kayak or SUP if you want. A very nice way to spend the day.

The resort has a 1.5 mile hiking trail that is well maintained. It provides a nice view of the area with an elevation gain of around 600'.

There are plenty of boats to accommodate the guest's activities. Every evening after the end of dinner, they schedule the next day's activities to the desires of the guests. Whether it's diving, snorkeling, fishing, private island excursion or whatever.

The resort is located in a beautiful pristine environment with memorable activities. But that's not what makes the place so special. It's the people that work there. They truly care about you. They become your friends and you miss them when you leave. That is why we are coming back.

Room tip: Lay out all the clothes that you want to pack. Then put half of them back from where you got them. You won't need as much as you think.

Richard and his staff were excellent. The Dive operation was well run with world class diving. Oneta's staff has a strong fijian theme and it is incorporated into your stay. They are more authentic then what I have experienced at other resorts. The food is excellent. The setting is beautiful and the experience is well worth the effort in getting there. While the owner, Martin, was not at the resort during our stay, he was very responsive to my inquiries and made us feel welcome well before we arrived. I highly recommend a holiday to Oneta Resort if you are a diver and love the ocean.

Room tip: Do your best to stay off the reef. This place is special and relatively untouched. Help protect our reefs....
