Lalati Resort is an elegantly rustic resort - a great blend of Fiji culture, island activities, local fare and stunning views. All of the rooms are nicely appointed separate villas with comfortable beds, patios for entertaining or relaxing and just a short walk from the restaurant/bar/office. This is a small resort with only 5-20 patrons staying at any given time, so you'll get to know all of your fellow travelers and also the small experienced staff. Local rum cocktails and seafood were quite tasty although the menu is limited. Kayaking, snorkeling, diving, hiking and crab races are just a handful of the activities offered, but you can also simply retreat to your own space and enjoy doing absolutely nothing. Whatever you want, it's Fiji time!

While Lalati is a little tired in places (and more so than you see in the online pictures), it really is a rustic slice of heaven. If you are looking for 5 star luxury you’ll need to look elsewhere but if you are looking for a place to unwind and relax with the option to be more active if your choose then then this is the place for you. The resort was quiet when we were there (2 other couples). The staff are friendly and the location cannot be beaten. Snorkelling out the front is good and you can easily kayak a short distance to take in another reef. Paid snorkelling charters are also available. The room was comfortable and you shouldn’t be put off by the eco toilet. The small air con struggles to keep the room cool. Our ceiling fan did not work. Some villas are quite a walk from the main area but ours was ideally positioned (WFV2). Take your own snacks and a bottle of gin (with tonic) or a few bottles of wine to enjoy on your balcony in the afternoon/evenings. I wouldn’t suggest you waste your time in the day spa. Its OVERPRICED and the staff (while lovely) are not trained. The food was good and varied. The boat ride over and arrival and departure lovely bookends to your stay. Another tip - cheaper to organise your own transfers to and from the jetty.

I could not recommend this resort more!! The most idyllic place to rest and unwind.

We were picked up by car to be driven to the boat, and when we arrived at the resort my breath was taken away, it is stunning!! So green and beautiful.

We were greeted with fresh coconuts, music and beautiful flower necklaces. I have traveled the world and have never received such a warm welcome.

The accomdation is beautiful, large beach huts with big balconies, and very comfy beds!

A few little things didnt work, but all these negative reviews seem to forget that this is the real Fiji! It isnt perfect! If you are looking for a standard trip with full entertainment, TVs, wifi, this isn't for you. This resort is for people trying to unwind, relax and have the most beautiful trip.

There are some great activities, we did a waterfall hike (not for the unfit) and visited the villages of Beqa island, the people were amazing! I would recommend taking some gifts for the school kids if you have room in your suitcases! We wish we had!

The food was brilliant, fresh and delicious! You have 2 options for both lunch and dinner, with always a fish and meat dish. Really really great! I would maybe recommend taking along some nibbles like crisps and you cant buy anything there, but we were absolutely fine just eating the food and not snacking as the portions were quite big!

Also some of the best snorkelling we have ever done! Kayaks available for trips and paddle boards.

Big shout out to Lucy who made our stay so unforgettable!

My husband and I were at Lalati for 3 nights to start out our honeymoon. We had the best time. The things that stood out to us the most were the amazing staff and the delicious food. The staff was so sweet and friendly, especially Lucy! She made our trip unforgettable! And Bill was so informative about Fiji and its culture during the activities we did.

We booked the beachfront honeymoon suite and it was so spacious and had a very comfortable bed. We loved the private patio on the side which had a small private pool, outdoor shower, and lounge bed.

We booked a private massage and picnic on the beach across the way and it was probably our favorite thing we did whilst there. The beach was stunning and the massage was so relaxing!

On our last night we were lucky enough to get to experience a traditional Fijian dinner, including a kava ceremony. It was an experience we won’t forget! Throughout our whole stay the food was out of this world. During the rest of our honeymoon back on the main island we kept comparing our meals to Lalati and they just did not compare!

We could not recommend Lalati enough if you are looking for a quiet getaway to escape from the real world. Thank you Lalati for making our honeymoon so amazing!

We have spent 4 nights at Lalati. The resort is beautifully authentic. Staff are amazing and they look after us very well. Oli, the manager is always helpful. Dema and Lucy do amazing massage. Caesar took me out for a great snorkelling just on the opposite island and we spotted 3 sharks. Freddie is very knowledgeable showing us the use of different herbs on the herbal medicine walk. The highlight of the trip was kids from village nearby came to sing Christmas carols for us on Christmas Day and we even had a bit of a dance off. Internet isn’t great here, but it’s great to switch off from the world and relax. One thing to note, bring plenty of mosquitoes repellent and after bite balm.

I would like to start off by saying we had a lovely relaxing holiday and enjoyed our time on the island.

The staff were friendly, our room was lovely our bed very comfortable. I liked that that we were quite a walk away from everyone else. A real chill out time. We had the the water front honeymoon villa.
This is a snorkelling and diving haven, quite beautiful.
We booked our holiday through Luxury escapes and apparently received our holiday half price. Almost $6000 down to just under $3000. Hence expecting luxury as quoted. Our package included 6 spa treatments, I was so looking forward to them. Our body scrub took 5 minutes and then we were wrapped in a sheet, our head scalp massage and treatment took less than 5 minutes. After being left alone for 45 minutes and then were told to go and have a shower and that was then the end of those treatments. The massage was ok, which we had on another day but lasted just under 45 minutes.
Our gourmet meals which I was really looking forward to were a big let down. No smorgasbord breakfast with arrays of fresh fruit, just some flowery watermelon, over ripe pineapple and paw paw each morning. The cooked breakfast was either an omelette or scrambled eggs with way too much cheese and sausage. Some days we had pancakes and bacon which was better but not my choice. I ended up asking for a sliced tomato to have on their frozen white bread which I toasted.
The evening meals were themed, i.e. Italian, Japanese, Mexican and Fijian they were a bit hit an miss.
The pool area was very run down, in fact the pool was green the first two days when we arrived and decking around it needs replacing.

This is my first review for Trip advisor but I do feel we did not get value for money even at half price which still makes it close to AU$428 a day instead of almost $900.
We also received an introductory dive course which was very professionally run and enjoyable.
I just think it needs to be advertised for what it is and not what it isn't! Its a fantastic private getaway. fantastic for snorkelling and diving and other water sports. It is not gourmet, luxury, and spa treatments very average!
The photos on web site are deceiving but I can see how they got them.
I will also be writing to luxury escapes about this experience. We met other people on the island that had bought the same packages and were also disappointed.

Ok – I’ve been holding off writing this because I lodged a complaint with My Fiji and with Lalati Management waiting to hear back and heard back once with a lot of defensive answers to the situations and circumstances which we experienced in the resort – basically insinuating we are making this whole story up.
So I’m sorry fellow travellers who have already booked as you won’t get your money back.
Before leaving to Lalati I saw a bad review from another traveller from Sydney (where I’m from) and it was too late to pull out otherwise we’d lose the whole package which was $2700AUD per person.
So I hope I can at least save some of you from wasting your money and having a disappointing time.
This is not a luxury honey moon retreat. Please believe me and others that have given this resort 1-2 stars – unless you are a diver or someone who hasn’t paid that much and not expecting much you will be upset.
It is in a nut shell false advertising that gets honeymooners to this resort to fund what the resort is really all about ..diving. Fullstop.
We bought a luxury honeymoon retreat package –when you read Luxury you do expect that with the amount we paid. This is not the case for Lalati – and this is why.
1. The island itself. Beaches are un swimmable. They are rocky, too much coral, too shallow especially when the tide goes out and then you are left with mangroves, debris and mud. The only place to swim is near the jetty and that water is deep. My partner and I are accustomed to swimming in tropical water, but this water is not safe and no one swam in it. You can swim in the small pool that offer cool relief and white paint that comes off on your clothes and skin.
2. Private villas.. there is no privacy. The honeymoon villas are right next to the pathway that locals use (not their fault btw) to get from the village to the jetty. My privacy was compromised a few times. One night about 10 men walked past the villa when I was about to close the curtains and I was barely covered in a towel. As I was having a shower I thought I heard an old mobile tone go off also close to the window. The back of the villas backs on to bush and the mountain. There are no fences, or security guards etc.. no privacy and not secluded. The “honeymoon villa” we stayed in was new, and that’s about all I can say about it. Clean and modern. But very basic and looked and felt more like someone had moved out of their house and left the furniture. It didn’t have a day bed in the back. If you go to Lalati’s website and click on Honey Moon villa – you’ll see they list them as having one. But not the new villas. Word of caution - The water is brown too so don’t brush teeth in it.
3. The food – be prepared to be hungry. The food itself is hit and miss but it does taste good. The website quotes “gourmet” and it is far from that. To top it off, I had to give my partner half my plate so he wouldn’t go hungry because the portions for lunch and dinner were small and there are no meals available in between main meals. We had to eat noodles and snacks we bought from the marina! There are chips and chocolate in the office but that’s about it. If you sell yourself as Luxury you better hope you don’t have to ASK FOR ADDED SNACKS OR EVEN JUST TO ASK!!!!
4. Going to the marina is only possible if others are leaving the island or coming into the island. Pretty much stuck there on the island with no food.
5. Don’t go to the private beach – please see attached photos. This was a complete joke. $190FJD to be taken there on a 2min ride to the opposite side of the island with lunch left overs from the dinner the night before. Once again the tide went out fast and the pictures explain everything. Nowhere to swim at all. The only shelter has the words the CRAP SHACK clearly written inside it if you look closely!! Very romantic indeed..
6. The Loloma Spa – most people like me who have been to many day spas and massages know what to expect when they read those words esp at a “Luxury Resort” but don’t expect that at Lalati. We had two massages the 1st was a complimentary couple’s massage and before the massage started, our underpants were pulled right below our buttocks instead of a towel placed at the top of the underpant and pulled slightly down so the top of the buttocks muscle can be accessed. It was rough but OK. The second one I felt the masseurs were distracted but something as I received a one handed massage which stopped on and off and thought the pulling down of our underpants was a one off but nope it happened again. Also the masseurs are bar staff (not their fault) but not specific to the spa – the massage left me with a kink in my neck for almost two weeks after, Also – my partner heard a camera shutter noise during our massage and it put him ill at ease during the whole massage!
The resort is surrounded by picturesque greenery and deep blue water, so at times it can be breath taking. (and that’s why photos are so appealing and easy to sell) But that’s about it and that’s why the resort sucks in people that are looking for a luxury romantic get away!. You can’t go walking on your own (anywhere) , climbing mountains on your own, swimming in the ocean on your own… you can wade in less than knee high water though...
The only good part of Lalati were the Fijian workers. They were lovely and worked hard with what they have. They make Lalati. When my partner and I left we filled out a questionnaire on the “resort” by one of the workers who seemed down when we were leaving early (we couldn’t handle staying one more night and which happens a lot apparently) . We felt bad for her and the other workers and gave the place top stars and this was our biggest mistake because once we complained to My Fiji and Lalati Management obviously used this against our complaint and to add salt to the wound they lied about certain complaints too!
Just goes to show, we should have left when we arrived in hindsight. But who has the “luxury” of forfeiting $7KAUD??

The really good - the dive shop and the activities run from there are excellent. The very personable couple running the dive shop run a first class operation and are really nice people. Through them, my wife and I had a good time diving, kayaking, snorkeling, visiting villages and participating in fun events like kava ceremonies.

The 'what you'd expect' - picturesque location and very nice locals. You'll find this just about everywhere in Fiji though.

The passable - the quality of the accommodation is okay and just about commensurate with its cost though in our particular case the air conditioning didn't work. The management, by the way resisted this conclusion explaining to us later in writing that we were wrong and that it actually worked - except that it was a hot day at the time! I need to remember that one next time a find a heater that only works when it's not cold. There was also some sort of maintenance work going on in the villa next door to ours. More on that below.

The 'read the fine print' - Lalati is a a two and a half hour drive from Nadi. If you can't get to Pacific Harbor by nightfall you won't be able to be transferred to the resort because the boat stops running. So you'll need to factor an extra night's accommodation on the mainland into your costs. In our case a late flight reschedule by Virgin Airlines ended up costing us a night's accommodation on the island and the extra slug for mainland accommodation. All this will be in the fine print somewhere but obviously you need to know it before you put down your deposit.

The possibly dismaying - If you are expecting to find a sandy beach in front of your waterfront accommodation suitable for carefree frolicking, you will be disappointed. The waterfront accommodation fronts onto rocks and dead coral and mangroves. It's a bit of a trek to a narrow sandy area of beach and even that is not really a frolicking area. But you can get to some good snorkeling if you enter the water off the end of the Lalati pier.

The rip off - the standard of the food given the prices charged for that component of the overall cost is unconscionable. The ingredients are cheap, the cooking standard amateurish, the choices limited. If you've been to comparably priced resorts just about anywhere in the Pacific and south east Asia you'll be familiar with great menus, both European and local food choices, and the employment of good chefs capable of delivering delightful food. A comment to management on this shortcoming elicited this condescending and risible reply - 'It’s because it's Fiji, not Italy, not the US and not Australia.'

The problem - You may have noticed a certain defensiveness in management's reply to criticisms found in other reviews on these pages. Know that there is no 'the customer is always right' policy informing this lot's philosophy of management. When I pointed out that Lalati's Australian representative instantly became uncontactable as soon as I paid our deposit, it was noted that I could have contacted their US representative for further information about my booking! The problem apparently was my incapacity for lateral thinking, not their lack of courtesy. The same communication problem resulted in there being no allocated driver waiting for us at Nadi for the long trip to Pacific Harbor. This wasn't their fault because - wait for it - the Australian representative, who'd we eventually contacted, hadn't relayed our message that we were on a later flight! Unfortunately this sort of backs to wall approach to inevitable grievances tends to diminish the better aspects of the resort. Remember the maintenance work next door? I'd described it as construction work in my observation that this wasn't ideal for a guest seeking peace in paradise. Management took umbrage at this. It wasn't construction. They were just changing wall panels!

The verdict - We had a good time despite the negatives described above. A similarly aged couple we met there were completely satisfied. And by way of response to our gripes, we were given a night's upgrade to the Oceanview Villa which was nicely set in a beautiful garden (perversely, it doesn't actually have an ocean view!). But there's much better on offer at the prices charged. Deluxe level accommodation at Blue Lagoon in the Yasawas for example is cheaper and leaves Lalati for dead. Be warned however. Lalati might be your cup of tea, but if you find a fly floating in your cup, and there are plenty in the dining area, don't bother complaining. It's not their fault.

After a two hour private van drive and a private 40 minute boat ride you realize why you put yourself through so much travel time to get to Lalati. It is a very small resort, not really suitable for children. There are only 7 Bungalows. They are huge with 2 bedrooms and large covered porch. The food is outstanding Beato, the chef, is a native Fijian, but you would never know, by all the different foods he prepares. We were never disappointed, each meal was better then the one before. The owners Jane and Clint eat their meals with the guests and you can choose to sit alone or at the common table with the rest of the resort guests. We never ate alone. It was so much fun, meeting new people. There were only 12 of us at the resort at the time we were there. The spa is just a 2 room spa capable of massage by Filo, who is a native Fijian who has been trained in massage, wraps and facials. All the staff is amazing. From the gardner Pita who came running after us one day with 2 umbrellas when we got caught in a rain storm. To generator Joe (he takes care of the generator) who just makes you laugh. There is not much to do here. Scuba diving is big. My husband and I did not do much more then sit by the pool, read and go to the spa. The Beach is really not that great. During low tide you can walk it, other wise they have trails alongside it in the woods. They have many cultural events planned during the week so you get a feel for the Fijian culture. Overall Lalati is a place that has it all for the person who enjoys a small intimate resort, with great food, and amazing service, where they all know your name. It is not for the person who needs all the bells and whistles of a 5 star resort who needs to be waited on hand and foot at every moment. They do take care of you here, but they also give you your space. It is definelty worth the trip. I cried when I left, the staff was standing on the beach playing guitar and singing to us as our boat drove off. I can't wait to go back!!! You can e-mail me any questions.

We were looking for a romantic beach venue that would provide a wedding ceremony package. Looked at highly recommended Lalati Resort and Spa in Fiji on the island of Beqa. For the very special occasion of getting married we described what we envisioned, what we required, and was reassured that Lalati was the best fit. We wanted a 4 to 5 star rating, big beach with blue water and splashing waves. After looking over Lalati's website I asked travel agent several questions. How fitting it was for our beach wedding. Of course all of his replies were very positive, and he even forwarded an email from an owner of Lalati Resort saying how air conditioning wasn't necessary since the climate is very sufficient. Agent said he had visited the resort himself. Turns out the resort is a scuba dive camp with port-a-can type bathrooms. Rain water supply, dirt walkways, KOA type pool, dirty accommodations. Muddy shoreline, no waves. Good wedding due to manager's ability. Romantic it is not!!! There is nothing romantic about have a fancied up port-a-can with flies next to your bed. Nothing romantic about a man made beach, boat dock with a dinner table, or muddy banks. We had to cut our honeymoon short because we were so unhappy with the accommodations and the whole situation. This is totally unbelievable and unacceptable. We feel we were sold a big package of lies and want our money back. Lalati is no way a 4 star resort much less a 5 star!!!

Lalati is not near a town. There are no roads on the island. Beqa Island is only accessible by a 30 minute boat ride from Pacific Harbour. If I remember correctly, it was a 3 hour car ride from Nadi International Airport.

Hi Becc - You don't normally see sharks when you snorkel in our area. There is a shark scuba dive, about 40 minutes away, but definitely not in the snorkel spots. We don't have any floating aids, but we do have vests you can use to snorkel. You may want to try out the "house reef" which is not a boat snorkel, but a "walk in" snorkel from our dock. That way you can get comfortable, before you do a boat snorkel trip.
