Just excellent

Reviewed May 8, 2024
We have hesitated before selecting this hotel. It is not cheap, and we like to have a sea view but selected the last room available on the garden side. And we liked it very much as there is a view on a real beautiful garden. The people are very nice, helpful and professional. We loved the breakfast on the terrasse with sea view: many choices a la carte and you can select as much as you want. We recommend the home cakes. Good point to offer a bottle of water in your room every day.

Dear Gchat,
Reassuring to learn that our budget room with garden view did meet your high expectations.

Thank you for the compliments about the garden, the staff, and our all-you-can-eat breakfast served a la carte choosing from a menu offering many local quality products and Sicilian specialties as home-made butter croissants, certified organic marmalades from the Mount Etna area, buffalo joghurt or buffalo mozzarella from the Ragusa highlands, or fresh seasonal local fruits.

Our fresh and tasty Sicilian home cakes are prepared by our chef Rosaria or by assistant cook Irene, we printed and showed them your review, and they both thank you from the bottom of their hearts.

We are all looking forward to welcoming you again at our Villa Schuler,

The Hotel Villa Schuler is certainly one of the nicest accommodations in Taormina! Its terraces offer an unobstructed panoramic view across the Ionic Sea and the Etna. This is due to the very location of the Villa on the edge of Taormina hill which makes it utterly unique. Not even the most high-priced hotels of Taormina can compete with this feature.
The rooms are nicely furnished while the whole building has been renovated recently up to the last mindful detail. A wonderful surplus is a botanic garden in the rear of the Villa complete with shadowy hide-aways for hot summer hours. Even a little pond, biotope for turtles and goldfish, pleases the eye. By traversing the garden the guest reaches the vibrant shopping and restaurant area of Taormina within three minutes–– leaving behind the delicate stillness of Villa Schuler's garden and hotel.
The à la carte breakfast is delicious and is served by very warm and friendly Italian, English and Bulgarian speaking waitresses and waiters. The hotel personnel is at competent and very polite service.
No wishes to be left unaccomplished––except maybe for a dinner service at night.
I can highly recommend this privately managed hotel which is the most precious pearl among the Taormina hotels.

Dear JeanField,

we would like to express our gratefulness for the appreciation of so many mentioned details. Yes, the unobstructed, unique position of the Villa Schuler is something we have to thank both our grand/grand-parents who started the hotel in 1905 but also the following two generations of the Schuler family who all chose not to build inside the historic large botanic garden surrounding the hotel building.

So today our informal, old-world-charm hotel reflecting the architecture, history, and tradition of the oldest owner-run hotel in Sicily, 4 generations since 1905, remains an attractive small boutique hotel of 32 rooms only, surrounded by its large panoramic garden area. Adding the three private gardens of our direct neighbors, actually the largest private garden area inside the medieval town center of Taormina.
A “delicate stillness”, as you poetically describe it, just two walking minutes to the main street, so very close to all major attractions.

Good to learn that you enjoyed also our breakfast served a la carte, a slightly different concept of serving breakfast. Guests can reserve “Room Only” or add different breakfast alternatives. While most hotels offer just one breakfast type, we offer different options, even staying flexible and choosing day by day, from just ordering a coffee, a tea, or a cappuccino, to choosing the “fresh Fruits&Cereal” breakfast, the “continental breakfast” or the “full breakfast served a la carte”, in which guests can order a cooked to order, all-you-can-eat breakfast of quality products comfortably served a la carte, just as in a restaurant.

We also thank you for your final suggestion about considering to introduce dinner at night. Our hotel is located so close to the medieval center of town, within 10 walking minutes guests can choose between around 80 places to eat, from the traditional small trattorias to gourmet restaurants and famous Michelin star restaurants.
Your suggestion is useful anyway because also we are considering introducing an additional small a la carte menu for guests preferring not to go out and have a genuine local meal served on our peaceful intimate premises. Last winter we completely refurbished our large hotel kitchen which possesses now all state of the art technical and legal requirements to do that.

Keep staying updated through our website!

We loved this hotel so much, we extended our stay. We stayed in the Garden Suite for 10 days. The room was so private, quiet and peaceful yet only a 3 minute walk through a gorgeous garden to all the shops, restaurants and crowds of Taormina.
I cannot say enough about the amazing staff here. All so kind, helpful, and always available to us. Breakfast is substantial offering cereals, yogurts, breads and croissants, eggs to order, fresh cheeses, fresh squeezed blood orange juice, Italian and American coffee and fresh fruits. All this while eating your breakfast with an amazing view of the turquoise sea and Mt. Etna looming in the background. There is also a rooftop area with loungers and an amazing view. Drinks are served upon request. The private garden space is something to see with amazing plants, flowers, fruit trees and a fish pond. Tables and chairs are available in the garden for peace, quiet and conversation.
As a travel industry veteran and owners of our own boutique travel agency, this hotel is an unexpected find. So much so, we have already made reservations to come back and I will most confidently recommend this hotel to our clients coming to Taormina.
Lastly, it would be unfair of me to submit this review without special and heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff of this hotel. Simona, Marieangela, Elena and all the rest who exemplify the epitome of excellent customer service, Marco who took care of our luggage and made the best Aperol Spritz, Rosita, Luca and Evgenya who made our breakfast every morning a delight with a bright Sicilian smile, excellent service and fulfilled all our breakfast wants within reason even if it wasn’t on the menu. We appreciate all your hard work and your willingness to please and we look forward to returning again in the fall. Grazie mille a tutti! Abbracci!

Dear Philip C, Receiving compliments, as yours from experienced travel industry veterans and owners of a boutique travel agency makes us particularly proud and happy. Good to read that you liked your stay at our Garden Villa Suite.

It happens quite frequently that guests decide to extend their stay and we have many repeaters who choose our Garden Villa Suite because the large apartment is nestled inside our historic large botanic garden providing lots of space combined with absolute privacy.

Thank you also for the compliments about our location close to all major attractions, our Roottop Lounge&Terrace, our concept of serving breakfast a la carte, as in a restaurant, and those about our large botanic garden, the oasis of peace right in the middle of Taormina’s medieval town center that you enjoyed so much.

No matter how good a hotel or its management might be, it is always the staff and their attitude that makes the fundamental difference. Our committed team is truly the lifeblood, the heart and soul of our hotel. The fact that you mention many of them by name shows that they all provided good, reliable, and above all personalized services.
Their commitment, dedication, and expertise are crucial in creating memorable stays for our guests.

The most important thing when staying in a hotel is indeed the good feeling of being welcomed and pampered in a genuine and personalized way. We are happy to read, dear Philip C, that you appreciated exactly that.

Thank you for the compliments and your new reservation. We don’t often head to the same destination twice, but as there is so much to discover in this part of Sicily, we have indeed many loyal repeaters who return and tell us they discovered new things again and again. We love our island and we and our staff are always there with our genuine insider suggestions.

Looking forward to welcoming you soon again

The most incredible hotel! Truly charming, exceptional staff, generous and delicious breakfast and the most breath taking views. We stayed for three nights in an ocean view bedroom, and we loved every moment. The hotel was so elegant, and had so much Sicilian craft with a feel of the Grand Tour and historical prestige. The staff were so welcoming, helpful and smiling. We would love to visit again in the future. Highly recommended!

Room tip: Try the home made buffala yoghurt with homemade granola and honey for breakfast. Delicious! Also you must visit the roof terrace!

Dear StaycieD, Thank you so much for such a lovely review, we printed and shared it with our team. One aspect you mentioned gives us the chance to describe the type of hotel we are, the hotel style and the ambience to expect, the values we believe in.

Hotel Villa Schuler opened in 1905 and is the oldest owner-run hotel in Sicily. Four generations of our family have continued to cultivate and preserve the beauty of this historic building surrounded by its own large botanic gardens always trying to mix tradition and modern comfort in a balanced way.

Family style, informal, direct contact with our guests, personalized services, a strong passion for traditional hospitality, this is our way of living. We feel rooted in traditional hotellerie combined with all comforts of the modern hotel industry based on refined and genuine luxury and on the quality and authenticity of personalized services.

Our staff is our family, welcoming, professionally trained, experienced, and motivated. Most of them were born and grown up in the Taormina area adding that genuine local touch to our guest’s experience.

With our multilingual staff, we cultivate what we know is the most precious quality that characterizes Sicily: the international soul of a truly unique and hospitable Island, which has been “home” to so many different great cultures.

For all of us working here at the Villa Schuler it is a big privilege to have the chance to welcome into our “home” guests coming from all over the world and we feel both testimonies and ambassadors of the beauty, the rich culture, of the nature and of the fragrances and tastes of Sicily.

Our mission is to convey our love for our island to all our guests.
The fundaments to succeed in it are the great respect for nature and sustainable tourism and the correctness towards our guests, our staff, our suppliers, our colleagues, and all our partners. And it’s adhering to these ethical values that guides us day by day.

Reading your passionate review was a stimulating reassurance for all of us. Thank you!
Looking forward to welcoming you again in our small oasis.

First of all, excellent location. A few steps away from the Main Street and main attractions of Taormina. Second of all, the room was amazing, with an amazing view, clean, even the small detail of the light up bathroom window was on point to the whole style of a well kept villa in a modern customized way, respecting all its glory and beauty of the past days. A beautiful garden and a beautiful terrazza for breakfast. The breakfast even though it was charged extra, everything was fresh and there were many options. Also, with extra charge was the private parking, but we arrived with the car directly to the hotel, and we were feeling safe as to where we were leaving our car. The stuff was also very helpful, with everything about the hotel but also with restaurant recommendations and general information about Taormina. Last but definitely not least, our favourite member of the stuff was Marco. Always with the smile, he was the one to welcome us and to say goodbye to us, to help us carry our luggage in and out of the hotel, and he is also a barman, a waiter and always around to help. He reminded it is of the lobby boy from the movie “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and we mean it in the most respectful way possible, the one that anticipated the client’s needs. Thank you for the experience.

Dea Eleni Markella C, this is one of the most wonderful reviews we ever received! Thank you so much!

We printed your review and gave it to be read by each staff member, especially by Marco, who was so happy about it, greeting you warmly! We as the managers and owners of Hotel Villa Schuler completely agree on the importance of anticipating guest’s needs and providing attentive, emphatic, and professional services.

Even if your stay was a very short one, you noticed this immediately. Marco has been working with us for many years and we greatly value and honor his attitude to his job and to the guests. He embodies exactly what hospitality is all about. Thank you for emphasizing this in your comment. It is much more important than anything else that the Hotel Villa Schuler offers its guests. The cleanliness of the rooms, the beauty of the historic Villa, and the great location of our hotel, all these things are absolutely important and are looked after by us with care and love, because they give our guests comfort and ease. But all this would be nothing without the genuine and sincere hospitality provided by the people who work here. They are the very soul of Villa Schuler. That is the essence of the hotel business we love to do.

We would be delighted to welcome you back one day! Christine, Gerhard, and Andrea Schuler
