If you are looking for a perfect "slice of heaven" this hotel is for you. I actually did not know a "slice of heaven" existed any longer.
We had planned on staying 1 week and extended our stay to 12 days.
The staff, Elena, Mariaangela, Simone, Christian and Alessandro Schuler, made our stay even more incredible. It was a truly a home away from home. We did not want to leave!
From bus schedules, to the Taormina Opera, to spa treatments to the beach, they took care of it.
The Corso is very close and was very busy while we were there, however a few steps away is the peaceful Villa Schuler.
On the forth floor you will find another haven, to watch Mt. Etna.
The garden surrounding Villa Schuler was more than lovely. They even have 9 turtles to entertain you on your way to the Corso.
I highly recommend you read the history of Villa Schuler as it is one of most interesting reads for any hotel I have ever stayed at.
I travel quite a bit and will say with all honestly........this was the BEST EVER!
Thank you ALL at Villa Schuler

Dear RitaR, it is your comments that are Stunning, Amazing, and Wonderful! Good to read that an experienced traveler like you sensed and enjoyed a “slice of heaven” atmosphere during your recent stay. It happens quite frequently that guests book a few nights and decide to extend their stay, but from 7 to 12 was quite unique! What makes us proud is that you mention so many staff members by name, it shows that our old-world personalized style of 24/7 direct contact with our guests is appreciated. We showed them your review, they remember you well and they asked us to thank you for your personal gratifying comments. Yes, the 120-year history of our hotel is quite unique, one of the first hotels built in Taormina and in the meanwhile the oldest owner-run hotel in Sicily, four generations since 1905. Whoever is interested will find the story published on our website in the “about us” section. Greetings and “arrivederci” from Christine, Gerhard, Andrea Schuler and the staff. This was our 9th visit to the Hotel. However the main part of the hotel is closed for the season due to the pandemic.
Gerhard, Christine and some of the staff have become friends.
They offered us the Garden Villa on a self catering basis which we accepted.
It had everything you needed, 2 bathrooms, one with a shower and one with a bath, a sofa and TV area, which was also a sofa bed, a small compact kitchen with a dishwasher, fridge, microwave, cooker and a separate bedroom with a TV. Outside was a seating/sunbathing patio, with garden furniture and a warm outside shower. It is attached to the hotel but has its own entrance through the garden. It was easy enough to go to the supermarket to buy food for breakfast, I never cook when on holiday !!! The fridge was stocked with wine, water and soft drinks and fresh fruit was available.
You have the garden for your own use and if you need any help you could ring reception.
So if you are thinking of going to Taormina and want to stay at the best hotel there is... book the Garden Villa... you will not regret it

Dear soobroo99, nine times here! Gratifying to read that as a loyal regular guest you also liked our Garden Villa Suite. Till our reopening March 6, 2021, it is the only accommodation type available this winter. Loyal guests like you mean a lot to both of us because it’s like a big family community reflecting our way of running the oldest owner-run hotel of Sicily. Traditions kept alive every day mixed with reliable technologies and our love for this way of living the hotel. Yes, the Garden Villa Suite is the ideal solution for those who want a private accommodation, with an independent entrance, inside the largest garden in the historical center of Taormina, with lots of space and quality services. A different quality of holiday, individual, the freedom not to have schedules, not having to share the use of common areas, absolute privacy, the freedom to shop in the alleys around the park or at the town market and eat what you prefer, in private accommodation with plenty of space, a modern and functional cooking area, availability of parking and garage, right in the historic center of Taormina with clearly all trattorias and restaurants within walking distance in 2-3 minutes. Isolated with lots of choices. We are happy to read that you enjoyed the Garden Villa Suite. Looking forward to the pleasure of welcoming you again for your announced 10th stay here, “arrivederci a Taormina” Christine and Gerhard Schuler owners and manager Hotel Villa Schuler, Taormina link to the Hotel website at the top center of this TripAdvisor page

Great hotel. Centrally placed so shops and restaurants are a short ( 3 minute) uphill/ up steps walk away. You can actually go out through their beautiful, well kept, garden behind the hotel which gets you half way to the shops. The reception staff with Simone, and other whose names I didn't catch were extremely helpful and cheery. The hotel has no restaurant and they were very happy to give recommendations as to where to eat. The breakfast comes in 3 options...varying price and choices, all brought to the table so there is no breakfast bar to walk and look at and choose from. The parking is valet service and really useful because otherwise parking is very difficult, even in April. The bar is at the entrance, appears well stocked but there isn't really much of an area to sit at and during our 5 days we saw no guests there, but I guess you can take your drinks up to the 4th floor where there is a roof terrace with great views. We had a lovely corner room, (superior double room with sea view) with views over the sea from one window and also across to mount Etna through the other. We would definitely stay there again.

thank you for your detailed comments. It is good to read that you enjoyed your recent stay, from the view to the quality of the rooms and of our services. Yes, it is true we serve only breakfast in the morning and then snacks 24/7. Guests can reserve room only or add different breakfast types, from just ordering a coffee or cappuccino, to the “fresh Fruits&Cereal” breakfast, the “continental breakfast” or the “full breakfast served a la carte”, in which guests can order a cooked to order, all-you-can-eat breakfast of quality products served a la carte, just as in a restaurant. Our breakfast menu offers many local, seasonal, genuine, and (wherever possible) organic products of Sicily as well as many traditional recipes such as our homemade „granite“ and cakes. All dishes are ready to order and personal preferences, as in a good restaurant, can be taken care of. Gluten-free products are available as well. Our unique breakfast served a la carte is a service available also to guests not staying at our hotel. Taormina has a lot of so-called Bed&Breakfast accommodations, many of them not even serving breakfast, and when they do, it cannot be compared to this experience. No need to reserve in advance, just turn up contacting the front desk. Reservations on the previous evening are recommended. Many guests not staying at our hotel that came to enjoy our breakfast served a la carte, decided to book us for their next stay in Taormina. Whoever likes to try it is welcome. Whoever likes to check our breakfast menu can visit our website and find it in “services” and in „faqs“ or download it from the provided QR code. As far as our bar services are concerned, YES, we serve drinks all over the premises. Our reception staff is available 24/7 also in order to organize the bar service. Thank you also for your promise to return. We don’t often head to the same destination twice, but as there is so much to discover in this part of Sicily, we have indeed many loyal repeaters that return and tell us they discovered new things again and again. We love our island and of course, we and our staff are always there with our genuine insider suggestions. If your romantic vision of a perfect hotel is an elegant old terracotta building, with trees and flowers, and with a lovely outside terrace, with breathtaking views of the sparkling bay, across to Etna - along with an intimate rooftop terrace with the same incredible views - then you'll love this place.

Our room (26) faced away from the sea but towards the lovely garden and with a stunning backdrop of sheer hills overlooking the town. There was a nice little balcony with a table and chairs, and the room was spacious and full of light.

Not all rooms have balconies; you would probably want to confirm details when you book.

The basic room rate is very reasonable (especially for Taormina) but breakfast is not included. You can opt for a continental breakfast at 8 euros each which will get you a croissant and some jam and butter along with a lovely glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, and tea or coffee; this is served to your room but I believe if you prefer you can have it on the outside terrace instead.

The full breakfast is 20 euros each and we did go for this on our last morning, sitting on the lovely terrace and taking in the astonishing view.

The staff are wonderful. On arrival, Marco kindly made us a cool drink of sparkling wine with orange juice (complimentary) and when we left we were given a little jar of marmalade which they make themselves to take as a souvenir. I believe this business has been run by the same family for around a century and they can be rightly proud of their hotel.

If you are arriving by train, you are probably best to take a taxi from the station as it's a steep climb up the hill to the town. Although the drive to the hotel makes it feel like you're not close to the main street, this is deceptive; a short flight of steps up from the back garden will have you right in the centre of Taormina in a couple of minutes. If you are arriving by bus then from the bus depot, head uphill, left onto the main street and then watch out for Dior on the left, there's a flight of steps down that'll take you to the hotel. They have a back gate into the garden with an access code they give you, but there's a public path on the right as you come down as well. If you get as far as the main square, you've gone slightly too far.

We had hoped to do a tour exploring Etna and also taking in some wine tasting. The staff arranged a tour for us, which was really great; we went up as far as the cable car which you could choose to take the top (but you need to budget a couple of hours for the round trip), and then we visited two vineyards and ate some absolutely incredible food. Sicilian wine is also very good. We also went to the gorge at Alcantara.

I would say that this is one of the very best hotels I have ever stayed in. It really exceeded both our expectations and we were very sorry to leave.

What beautiful statements and detailed descriptions! We are thrilled to read that we met your high expectations. We know that the first step in exceeding customers' expectations is to know those expectations well and this is exactly where Tripadvisor continues to be for us a very useful instrument. Reading carefully not only the positive comments but also the many critics and suggestions made in all 1700 plus reviews posted here, we have been discussing them all and taken those calls to action seriously. Many improvements, changes, and refurbishing works have taken place taking those suggestions seriously. And then it is important to make your official website an absolutely reliable mirror of what you actually are. Genuine and exact descriptions are the basis for any reliable communication, no exaggerated superlatives, no photoshopping. The hotel marketing industry has a bit of a bad rap for being sometimes sneaky and manipulative, but it doesn’t have to be. And we are also proud to state that all Tripadvisor reviews about us are genuine reviews of guests that actually stayed here. “Exactly what I imagined” confirmed to us that transparency always wins. From beautiful clean rooms to views and customer service this villa rates a ten. Owned and operated by Alessandro and Andrea Schuler, our group was welcomed with a light snack and champagne. Alessandro gave us the history of the villa and their services.
We were booked in one of the smaller 3rd floor rooms but I have no complaints. Our balcony with two lounge chairs overlooked the Bay of Giardini-Naxos and Mt. Etna. There was also a small clothesline discreetly hiden on the balcony
if you would like to handwash a small amount of clothing.
We had drinks one evening in the garden and after the sun went down we enjoyed seeing a lava flow from Mt Etna on the 4th floor rooftop balcony. They also serve a delicious breakfast on an outdoor patio overlooking the bay or a dining room in the villa.
Close to shopping and restaurants this villa is tucked into a quiet location in Taormina. For a relaxing visit to Taormina, this is it!

We stayed for 3 nights and were sad to leave.
Lovely big bedroom with the most beautiful and pretty view of their gorgeous garden.
They even have several turtles in their garden pond!
The staff are wonderful, every one of them. So friendly, so efficient. So hard working.
Everything is spotless here and the breakfasts on the terrace are amazing value for money and can set you up for the day.
Big shout out for Marco, the amazing greeter and muliple role person and thanks to all the other staff too. We had a wonderful time!

We arrived here for 2 nights .
Booked a garden room on a special offer rate . Got upgraded to superior garden room .
However the room was very dated & the bathroom had a plastic telephone box shower with a mirror & jacuzzi in it !! Strange. Bizarrely there were two bathrooms , one a disabled one . Hotel has many stone steps to climb at the entrance.

We found this room ( North facing ) cold & a tiny bit damp .
We moved to a room overlooking the sea which was much warmer & had a nice balcony to sit in the sun . The room was though smaller & quite cramped with the same old style of bathroom.
It was amazingly dark at night which was good .
The breakfasts are very confusing.
They were all at an extra charge ranging from €8 to €20 per person .
You were served only & as a bit short staffed , took a while to arrive .Breakfast terrace was lovely with fab views out to sea .
Many nationalities at the hotel & town .

We opted for the €10 per person which actually turned out very well.
The breakfast was really good.
Buffalo milk yogurt, local honey & fresh bread including rye as I don’t eat wheat .
Fresh juice , fruit hot drinks .cereal etc .
( no meat , cheese or eggs as that would be €20 each )

Taormina has beautiful views & many nice
Restaurants / cafes .
Beware though that it’s a tourist trap with elevated prices & tacky shops in places.
We were lucky enough to get free parking as there is nowhere to park unless you pay at a hotel . Parking is for residents in Taormina.
The staff were very friendly & polite but seemed a bit overworked .
Room was very clean & comfortable.

Here is the other side of the story. The guest did actually not book for two nights, it was a reservation for just one night, room only, the cheapest off-season rate. On arrival we surprised the guest with a room upgrade from the reserved standard double with balcony garden view to a Superior Room with two bathrooms and a large garden view terrace, adding a not foreseen free parking bonus. Guest asked for an additional upgrade to a Superior sea view room but did not accept the proposed symbolic supplement of 20 Euro. The next morning guest asked us to extend the stay, usually one does so if the hotel & services are good. Why this average rating? Just because we did not give in to the guest’s later requests of adding a second discounted room upgrade, because we were not prepared to further reduce an already discounted and booked off-season rate because we did not accept the request of adding 4 free breakfasts to that reserved off-season room-only rate. Guest alluded he might post a bad review for us not giving in. And here it is. Beautiful hotel in a great location within Taormina with all the amenities and an amazing garden in the back you can get lost in! We had a corner room with 2 balconies and mesmerizing views of Mt Etna and the sea. The staff were attentive, friendly and ensured we had everything we needed. The breakfast outside overlooking the sea was well worth the $20 euro per person. It’s the first time I chose to pay for breakfast in all of my travels, and it was well worth it to have a great fresh hot breakfast brought to us and made for us.

Dra guest from New Jersey, we are glad to read that your recent stay fulfilled your high expectations. Thank you for the compliments to the hotel, the allocated room, the garden, the staff, the services, and for those about our breakfast. May we take the opportunity to describe our various breakfast options in detail: guests can reserve room only or add different breakfast types, even staying flexible choosing day by day, from just ordering a coffee or cappuccino, to the “fresh Fruits&Cereal” breakfast, the “continental breakfast” or the “full breakfast served a la carte”, in which guests can order a cooked to order, all-you-can-eat breakfast of quality products served a la carte, just as in a restaurant. Our breakfast menu offers many local, seasonal, genuine, and (wherever possible) organic products of Sicily as well as many traditional recipes such as our homemade cakes or the delicious „Sicilian granita”, a cold, sweet treat made from water, fresh and naturally riped organic local fruits, very little sugar, never completely frozen but mixed continuously to obtain a refreshing texture that is simultaneously grainy and creamy. All dishes are ready to order and personal preferences, as in a good restaurant, can be taken care of. Gluten-free products are available as well. Rates 2022: Euro 22 per person, booking us directly it gets down to Euro 20 per day. Our unique breakfast served a la carte is a service available also to guests not staying at our hotel. We had a wonderful 4 night stay at Hotel Villa Schuler in Taormina. The hotel is very well situated with easy access to the main street of the town. We had a beautiful sea facing room that had glorious views of both the sea and Mount Etna. The staff were amazing and gave us good advice on where to go and booked us on a night drive up Mount Etna. We made use of their parking garage - worth paying extra for as parking is a nightmare on those small streets and not readily available. If I have to give a few negatives, I would say that not being able to make a cup of coffee or tea in our room was not great. To have a kettle and coffee/tea in the rooms would be a huge plus to this hotel. We love our morning cup of coffee first thing before we go down to breakfast. Breakfast is not buffet style but everything is served. The first morning we got a bit irritated as we could not get service and also had no idea of how things worked. Once we knew, the following days were easier and the waitress came to know what we would order. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Thank you so much for the compliments about the hotel, staff, and services, and also for the advice to other readers to book a garage space. Villa Schuler is one of the few hotels in the medieval town center of Taormina to be both easily reachable by car and to have a garage directly on the premises combined with an efficient valet parking service. Booking us directly it gets down to Euro 16 per day. Sorry to read you would have preferred a kettle in the room if you would have just told us when here! In this hot climate, not many guests use them, but of course, we can provide anytime guests with a complimentary kettle in the room! May we take this occasion to suggest to all future guests to always inform us about any special requests, as well as misfunctions or disturbances immediately and directly during their stay in order to give us a chance to be helpful and to test our 24/7 “consider it solved” approach. Addressing our breakfast service: we do not use a buffet but serve breakfast “a la carte”. So like in a restaurant guests choose a table, indoors in our Palm Terrace Orangery or outdoors on the panoramic seafront Palm Terrace, and then they order from a menu brought by our waitresses or waiters. The menu can also be downloaded from a QR code. Booking us directly gets down to Euro 20 per day. Our unique breakfast served a la carte is a service available also to guests not staying at our hotel. Taormina has a lot of so-called Bed&Breakfast accommodation, many of them not even serving breakfast, and when they do, it cannot be compared to this experience. No need to reserve in advance, just turn up contacting the front desk. Reservations on the previous evening are recommended in case of more than 4 persons. Looking forward to your next visit, kindest regards Christine and Gerhard Schuler manager Hotel Villa Schuler, Taormina link to the Hotel website at the top center of this TripAdvisor page

The Hotel Villa Schuler is certainly one of the nicest accommodations in Taormina! Its terraces offer an unobstructed panoramic view across the Ionic Sea and the Etna. This is due to the very location of the Villa on the edge of Taormina hill which makes it utterly unique. Not even the most high-priced hotels of Taormina can compete with this feature.
The rooms are nicely furnished while the whole building has been renovated recently up to the last mindful detail. A wonderful surplus is a botanic garden in the rear of the Villa complete with shadowy hide-aways for hot summer hours. Even a little pond, biotope for turtles and goldfish, pleases the eye. By traversing the garden the guest reaches the vibrant shopping and restaurant area of Taormina within three minutes–– leaving behind the delicate stillness of Villa Schuler's garden and hotel.
The à la carte breakfast is delicious and is served by very warm and friendly Italian, English and Bulgarian speaking waitresses and waiters. The hotel personnel is at competent and very polite service.
No wishes to be left unaccomplished––except maybe for a dinner service at night.
I can highly recommend this privately managed hotel which is the most precious pearl among the Taormina hotels.

Response from Gerhard Schuler, General Manager at Hotel Villa Schuler
Responded May 12, 2024
Dear JeanField, we would like to express our gratefulness for the appreciation of so many mentioned details. Yes, the unobstructed, unique position of the Villa Schuler is something we have to thank both our grand/grand-parents who started the hotel in 1905 but also the following two generations of the Schuler family who all chose not to build inside the historic large botanic garden surrounding the hotel building. So today our informal, old-world-charm hotel reflecting the architecture, history, and tradition of the oldest owner-run hotel in Sicily, 4 generations since 1905, remains an attractive small boutique hotel of 32 rooms only, surrounded by its large panoramic garden area. Adding the three private gardens of our direct neighbors, actually the largest private garden area inside the medieval town center of Taormina. A “delicate stillness”, as you poetically describe it, just two walking minutes to the main street, so very close to all major attractions. Good to learn that you enjoyed also our breakfast served a la carte, a slightly different concept of serving breakfast. Guests can reserve “Room Only” or add different breakfast alternatives. While most hotels offer just one breakfast type, we offer different options, even staying flexible and choosing day by day, from just ordering a coffee, a tea, or a cappuccino, to choosing the “fresh Fruits&Cereal” breakfast, the “continental breakfast” or the “full breakfast served a la carte”, in which guests can order a cooked to order, all-you-can-eat breakfast of quality products comfortably served a la carte, just as in a restaurant. We also thank you for your final suggestion about considering to introduce dinner at night. Our hotel is located so close to the medieval center of town, within 10 walking minutes guests can choose between around 80 places to eat, from the traditional small trattorias to gourmet restaurants and famous Michelin star restaurants. Your suggestion is useful anyway because also we are considering introducing an additional small a la carte menu for guests preferring not to go out and have a genuine local meal served on our peaceful intimate premises. Last winter we completely refurbished our large hotel kitchen which possesses now all state of the art technical and legal requirements to do that. Keep staying updated through our website!
