Wanted to love this place as the food had some amazing highlights but the service and consistency was just not there. Inventive dishes and unique flavors and textures keep it interesting.
Unfortunately at this price point and expectation of a Michelin star experience there were numerous misses on basic things one would expect from any restaurant at any price point.
Some of the highlights: caviar, tuna, squid, waygu, mackeral, apple ice cream were all 5/5 amazing! Note most of the highlights were ONLY on the larger tasting menu so plan for that if you are coming.
Some of the lowlights: Some nigiri are extremely small portions. Ikura wasn’t special at all. Oyster and toro was bland. Lobster was mediocre, the aged portion was bad. It took 30 minutes between one of the courses which seemed to be a mistake. Pours of wine and sake completely different between staff. Having to ask multiple times for water, wine or anything as the waiter forgot we ordered or asked the first time. The waiter taking the wine list immediately after ordering and not asking my dining partner who had an empty glass if they wanted to order. This took 3.5 hours not due to the number of courses or presentation but far below average service.
We visited for lunch based on the reviews and the Michelin star, we were not disappointed! We sat at the counter of the open kitchen which is a great place to watch the skills and talents of the chefs as they create each dish from scratch. We went for the larger tasting menu with the wine pairings, I’d recommend this if you have a big appetite as the dishes keep coming but they do offer a smaller tasting menu as well. The wine pairings are great as you get everything from beer, sake and wines all of which went well with the respective dishes. The menu is superb, one title per course but you are delivered multiple elements of each title all prepared and presented beautifully. Highly recommended.
Fixed menu only here, and it was really good, I liked how they tried to showcase using the same ingredients in multiple ways which made it a cool experience. It was also relatively easy to get into the time of year we went, so points for that.
Overall food was great, esp the nigiri. There were a handful of bites we didn't enjoy, and I think the sushi rice could have been more fresh and seasoned better for a restaurant of this price range and reputation. The rice texture was on point for me though.
I believe there are better omakase restaurants in town, but they are just really hard to find and book, so this is a very very good one that is accessible.
Maybe I should not have expected an omakase, and instead more of a fine-dining Michelin star-style spot. Service was great for both English and Spanish speakers. Def worth going out of your way for a visit.
We recently stayed 3 Months all over Japan and tried out a lot - yes I mean A LOT of different high end sushi restaurants there. Koy Shunka can easily compete with the best in Japan! We had a blast and enjoyed every second.
