Scenic West Coast Vancouver Island Getaway

Review of McKay Bay Lodge
Reviewed Jul 5, 2020
Decided to try new salmon waters on the west coast of Vancouver Island in 2020 and was not disappointed – by both the fishing and our excellent stay at McKay Bay Lodge. Cheryl, Brian, and all of their staff, take wonderful care of their guests from the moment one arrives. Our very affordable room package came with three meals per day and we were impressed from the outset by the quality and variety of the menus. All meals can be taken in the dining room, but for we diehards who are early on the water and often out until well after lunch, chefs extraordinaire Heather and Hanna send us off each evening after dinner with our take away breakfast and lunch for the next day – always tasty, filling and more than we can eat. With the fridge, microwave and coffee maker in the room, we could quickly get a hot breakfast before getting a first light start on the water at 5:00 am. And to top it off, we brought home salmon every day! I would highly recommend picturesque Bamfield and McKay Bay Lodge for a west coast British Columbia adventure and look forward to returning in 2021!

My father, my son, and myself had an excellent stay for three nights at the lodge. The suite we stayed in was clean and cozy and the lodge and property were well kept up and felt like home. As others have said, the food was plentiful and excellent. It was so great to grab a quick breakfast and coffee in the morning and then grab the pre-packed lunches, snacks, and water/soda from the fridge for a day of fishing. Coming back to dinner was fantastic, each meal was wonderful; steaks, halibut, oysters, and more than we could eat. It really was a superb experience for us, and we brought some fish home, too. Rebooked for next summer, can't wait.

Located at the western edge of Vancouver Island, the small town of Bamfield is as remote as one can get on this beautiful island. MacKay Bay Lodge is at the remote end of Beale Cape Road in West Bamfield, where the roads are not even paved.

Cheryl came to receive us at the docks and carted us along with our luggage in her ATV to the lodge. The lodge has a beautiful setting at the edge of the rain forest and overlooking the fishing dock with the serene waters of the Bamfield Inlet. She made us feel at home in our cosy room, which had an additional couple of bunk beds for kids. In the kitchen cum dining room there was a dining table and chairs, chest of drawers, fridge, microwave oven, kettle, wash basin with some crockery, and a sofa. Even though it was summer we needed to turn on the heater at night.

Breakfast, lunch and supper were included in the stay package. In addition we could visit the kitchen for some snacks or hot and cold drinks and tea and coffee sachets were available at any time of the day. Nancy would always prepare an excellent breakfast and we had an omelette with bacon, spinach, green onion and cheese on the first day, followed by grapefruit and coffee. A variety of cereals were also available. Lunch and dinner were three course meals consisting of a salad, a fish, chicken or meat dish with roast potato and followed by yummy dessert. Nancy and Sue really pampered us with a lot of goodies.

Cheryl would help us to plan our day. After breakfast I went for a leisurely walk to the beautiful Brady’s beach about 3 km away, and returned via the boardwalk along the harbour. In the evening Cheryl arranged for a boat ride with Robbie who took us further into the inlet where we saw a Mamma Bear with her Baby Bear on the far shore feeding on the grass.

Most of the other regular guests who visit here are into sport fishing and they regaled us with their fishing exploits and whale spotting for the day. There is a hot tub where they can relax and recover after a long day on the cold waters. We enjoyed our two day stay by just walking along the harbour and the forest, eating, drinking and sleeping to our hearts content. The atmosphere was very peaceful, serene and calming and it was a joy to just sit outside or upstairs on the veranda during sunset.

We were sad to leave when Brain dropped us back in the ATV to catch the boat back to Port Alberni.

Just returned from an amazing four night stay in the forest cabin at McKay Bay Lodge. Clean, quiet, lovely beds and a great kitchen. The McKay's built, maintain and manage this lovely retreat. They, and their staff, are very friendly and helpful. Whether you are fishing, hiking, or just want a quiet retreat in a spectacular area, this is a great place to stay and we will be back!

Room tip: We stayed in the forest cabin with a kitchen. Main lodge has rooms plus a dining room.

Thank you for the great review! You ladies were wonderful to have here. We all enjoyed the painted shells that were placed by the doorstep. We will try and make the pick-up off the boat less confusing next time (haha).
See you next season :)

This place is amazing. The staff is awesome. They have so many nice amenities, snacks, all the ice and soda drinks you need. The bakery items made by Nancy were delicious. We had issues with our boat and everyone was so helpful. They have a freezer to store your fish
as well. Their hot tub is in the back of the lodge
amongst the trees, very enjoyable after a day of
fishing. We’ll be back.

My partner and I travelled to Bamfield and spent one night at McKay Bay Lodge before beginning the West Coast Trail. We couldn't have asked for a better spot to stay ahead of our big adventure!

McKay Bay lodge is a very serene spot, with a really picturesque view across the water. We spent our day relaxing in the hammocks, took a sunny stroll to the amazing Brady's Beach, before returning to the lodge for an incredible, home made fish supper, and finishing the day off in the hot tub. It was exactly what we had hoped for before 7 days of camping.

The staff were incredibly helpful with helping us arrange the logistics of getting to the trail head the following day (for anyone wondering, the West Coast Express bus drops you off right by the dock where we were picked up and ferried to McKay Bay Lodge. The staff then arranged for a shuttle to pick us up from the same dock the following day to take us to the trail head. Perfect!)

Can't recommend enough. Would love to return with more time to be able to join one of the fishing trips!

Thanks!
