We booked our room here as Ronald McDonald House was full and this is quite close to the hospital. (We drove 23 hours to this location for my son’s specialist appointments). Our son is very high risk / immune compromised in regards to anything respiratory (flu and cold, let alone Covid, and is on oxygen 24/7, among other things). I called ahead & (according to the incredibly rude “manager” I spoke to in-person), I would have been talking to the owner on the phone. On the phone, with the owner, I asked about the room, let him know of our situation & confirmed this wasn’t a “Covid hotel” (which it is not). The owner was quite nice / understanding of our situation and booked our room for the week over the phone. Upon arrival we checked in with a front desk clerk & after bringing a load of things up to the room, noticed the gentleman at the desk (not the man who checked us in), was not wearing a mask, and neither was the guest he was checking in. I approached the desk to inquire if masks (although provincially mandatory at an establishment such as this), were mandatory. He stated he has asthma, therefor was exempt. When I asked why guests were walking around without masks, he said he can’t make people if they say they’re exempt. (These guests had masks, but were wearing them under their chin). Clearly Covid risk is not a priority or concern at this hotel. I explained the extreme risk to our son, and he brushed it off saying “well there’s other hotels” when I said we’d have to inquire elsewhere (although try getting last minute anywhere for 5 nights - which also should have been a red flag that we got a room so last minute). He was extremely hostile over me inquiring about the masks & being upset that it was not a mandatory protocol for anyone, stating “I can just check you out, obv this is a big deal”…”there’s other hotels in London.” When I asked for the owners contact number, he handed me a card. I asked again if this was the owner & was told yes. (that I later found out was actually the card of the hostile manager I had spoken to). When I asked for the actual owners number, after realizing this, he would not provide it. I let him know we would be contacting the health unit, and was told “go ahead.” I understand Covid isn’t a top priority for everyone, I understand some people are extremely defensive over their “right” to not wear masks and get very disgruntled over the topic, but in this situation we had informed the hotel of our situation & had inquired further regardless. We are currently here, and the second another hotel opens up we’re leaving & will never return to this establishment. I would not recommend this hotel to at-risks hospital goers, and honestly, if you’re looking for hospitality of any sort, save yourself the time & go absolutely anywhere else. You won’t be finding that with the management here.
