Little choice in hotels in this town...not your high end hotel.

Reviewed Jul 15, 2013via mobile
Basic hotel with little to no extras. Located beside a busy bar/ liquor store/parking lot/local hang out.

Not a lot of choices in Thompson for hotels not sure what the local standard is,similar to any removed small town.

It wasn't a horrible hotel but wouldn't be my top pick to return to. Will definitely look into a different hotel before returning.

I stayed in the Burntwood off and on for almost a month and got to know the front desk and the housekeeping staff really well. They were always very cordial and helpful. I liked that the rooms had free wifi, a fridge, microwave and a coffee maker. These items are really convenient when you are away from home for an extended period of time. There is a newer section where the rooms are a little bit bigger and quieter but lugging my suitcase up the stairs myself was not particularily pleasant (there is no elevator). The second floor rooms which are closer to the desk turned out to be more convenient for me. The noise from the stairs and the ice maker made it difficult for me to get an uninterupted sleep in room 201 but I really enjoyed having a seperate sitting area. There is another room like it at 200 and this was far quieter. Even though housekeeping does their very best, there is a smell of smoke even on the non-smoking floor. I suppose this is the case for any hotel that is not new construction.

I loved that complimentary breakfasts at Grapes on the main floor were included in the room stay. For more details about this aspect and photos, please feel free to check out my blog post at:http://foodmusings.ca/uncategorized/grapes-thompson/

not a bad hotel looks like a older best western or similar to that,
had a small pool and hot tub with an adjoining restaurant,

was there for Boy scouts and also happened to be there for Thompson days which is kind of neat.

Unfortunately thompson doesn't offer a lot of choices, but burntwood is a reasonably good one. furniture is out of date and rooms are really over priced but compared to the rest of the hotel's we've tried the rooms are nice. Staff was helpful.

The Burntwood hotel is pretty nice, but I think that someone who designed this had higher class people then those working in Thompson in mind. The hotel is equipped with a pool, and waterslide, but no microwave, and not all of their rooms have a mini fridge. They do have coin laundry facilities, and are a continental breakfast if you can wait til 7 to eat. The other thing is that more most of their rooms have only one bed, so companies have to pay more to accomadate their employees.

On a pretty short whim, I opted to drive from Minneapolis to as far north as you can reasonably drive in Manitoba. That road ends just shy of 1000 miles north in Thompson, MB. Thompson was founded in the 1950s as a mining town, and its very utilitarian in layout and services. Of the several major hotels, I opted for The Burntwood because it was locally owned and it seemed to have solid facilities.

The location is as good as you can really hope for in Thompson. Everything is a reasonable walk or very short drive away (depending on the weather). The hotel has a decent restaurant attached, and it also has one of the bigger nightlife establishments in town --the Regal Beagle (a strip joint, but in this part of Canada its where everybody goes, including many women). Neither affected my room on the far side of the hotel. The hotel has an indoor pool, work out facility and complimentary wife internet for guests (a big plus this far outside of mobile phone service). The service at the front desk was good.

The rooms are your basic fare: regular TV with cable, the previously noted wifi, a spacious bathroom with good shower --my only complaint was that the bed covers and furniture upholstery seemed to have some permanent staining (I assume this was from all the winter usage --and winter lasts a long time here... it snowed on our trip in late May). The whole hotel interior is a little worn. My other big complaint were the hours of the fitness center: 10am-10pm. I'm a morning workout person, and I've never seen a fitness center not open before --at the latest-- 8am. This was annoying.

Overall, if you find yourself in Thompson, this is a solid choice.
