UPDATED - Sanity break from COVID in the city

Reviewed Jun 28, 2021
Overall we still give it a 4 which is just about tops for us.

Price: Pretty steep, all in CAD 310 a night in June (just before the prices REALLY go up in July). This is for a "Pyramid" king room (not the cheapest). This takes account of a 20% discount off the base rate for Alberta residents. As we said last November, price is right up there with the Jasper Park Lodge "but" they are now almost in the same league as the JPL.

Location: It's up the hill from town, about a 5 km drive. We picked it to be able to go for walks right out the door of our accommodation. There are a couple of pleasant 1/2 hour walks out the door, up and down the lake. More adventuresome trails begin behind the property on the Pyramid Bench trail network.

Maybe a little too adventuresome! One morning during breakfast a nice big grizzly wandered quite nonchalantly through the lower parking lot and the boat house. Parks Canada wardens, who quickly responded to the call from the hotel , said "oh yeah, he's well known to us, never hurt anybody." Still, word to the wise: take bear spray!

Reservations: we used a mix of their web page and phone call. No issue with the reservation.
Check-out was "contactless" due to COVID.

Pyramid Lake Resort is a big rambling property with about a dozen accommodation buildings up and down a significant hill. Anyone with mobility problems should check when choosing a room.

The Room: #23, a "Pyramid Room" (slightly larger and better view than the cheaper "Cavell Room").
Spacious enough for two, for a 3 day stay with a card table deployed.
Comfortable (king) bed.
The room of course was spotless when we arrived (extra COVID cleaning) BUT of course no daily cleaning although you can request it.
Hooray for the laptop / charger power and USB outlets on the desk and bedside table lamps.
Hooray for decent lighting in the room.
The bar fridge is pretty small. (web page leads you to believe you get a larger fridge with the larger room) That said it is quiet. No freezer.
No kitchenette in the Pyramid rooms. If you want a "real" sink you will have to book one of the suite-type rooms.
Bathroom looked brand new or recently reno'd. All fixtures worked and good on them for installing a low flush toilet.
Noise: there is some sound bleed from the adjoining room. Fortunately our neighbours were quiet. There is the inevitable plumbing noise too although not as loud as it could have been.

Service ...
They were right there with a replacement "Keurig" coffee maker wen we found ours was plugged.
No housekeeping service due to COVID (was available on request, we didn't). Front desk staff, in the limited contact we had with them, were prompt, courteous and effective.
Restaurant service for breakfast was good (no that's not taking the bear into account).

Amenities ...
Internet: as noted in most reviews it is SLOW (satellite). It served us well enough though.
Coffee maker thankfully was stocked with decaf. See above, was plugged but quickly replaced.
TV (big) has a good array of channels, our familiar ones from Edmonton.
Hot tub --- yes they have one, it is small, located down by the office. I would be COVID comfortable with no more than 2 people in it. Didn't have any problem booking a time slot.

Special diet - yes they had decent gluten free toast for breakfast.

Room Tips: see the map of the property.
Rooms #19-22 and 27-30 are lower floor in the buildings at the front of the property. Rooms #23-26 and 31-34 are the upper floor. There is easier access to the upper floor. The parking lot is level with those rooms via fly-over bridges. Our room #23 was better than #24 (last stay), on the end with neighbours on one side only, and windows on two sides.

Ate breakfast here today. Not only was the food great, but the service by Sarah went above and beyond absolutely top notch. Will definitely be returning this summer and recommending to friends and our family

Stopped by the Pines restaurant Sunday morning for brunch on the patio. The weather was a bit chilly, but was offered a blanket and the patio heaters were on. Craig my server was delightful. Helpful and communicative, my whole experience was enjoyable. Food was delicious and the view was awesome!

Gorgeous location. I loved being up and away from the townsite of Jasper. Check in was easy and efficient. I was pleased with our lake view suite. We had a top floor and I was thankful. I could see how the bottom floor would have possibly been loud even with just small noises above. The room was nicer than expected. The reviews were mixed about them that’s for sure. The room was clean but the bathroom silver could use a really really good polishing. I loved waking up to deer on the front lawn outside of the balcony. I was underwhelmed by the coffee and muffin offered in the morning. For $250 a night a piece of fresh fruit would be wonderful. And considering the restaurant on site isn’t open and there’s no kitchen in the suites. It would’ve been nice to have something more first thing in the morning. I will also mention I was disheartened by the amount of garbage on the grounds below the balconies on the lawn. It’s gross people litter, especially in Jasper but the hotel staff should be doing sweeps of the yards to pick it up. The driveway was in bad shape getting up to the suites but I understand that with extreme temperature changes that happens. All in all I’m glad I came but I probably wouldn’t pay $250 per night for it again.

Thank you for your review of your recent visit to our resort this spring. We appreciate all of the feed back we receive about our property through various channels. Please accept my apologies for the inconsistencies you observed.

I have noted the items that needed attention including the baseboard cleaning and garbage on the grounds. I agree it is unfortunate that people choose to litter and as the snow melts, we try to gather what mother nature exposes. We were obviously behind in this effort.

As we move forward, we will use your observations to improve our offering.

Pretty nice, very clean and our room was pretty much updated since the last time we stayed here few years ago. We came here to just relax and have a long weekend, sleeping in and going for a walk in Pyramid island. It’s a bit pricey here and actually not much to do around end of March to April. There’s only one grill to barbecue for the whole resort so that’s a
Minus. Only one fire pit for bonfires so another
Minus. Otherwise , perfect serene view of Pyramid Lake. We would not stay here around this time of the year again.

We appreciate all of the feed back we receive about our property and would like to thank you for taking time to post this review.
We will use your observations to improve our offerings during this time during the pandemic. Under normal circumstances we would have two BBQs for guest use, however the current area needs further enhancements before we can socially distance the two BBQs.

This is the first year we have had a firepit at the front of the property and are restricted as to where these can be on the property and how many of these we can provide.

Thank you again for your review.

When you pay 200+ in low season on a weekday you expect more. Location was the only good thing. I have booked a Cavell Room with views to the lake. At arrival check in was fine. However, they gave me a room totally different to the pics in their website (I did the booking directly with the property) with almost no views to the lake but to a road curve and a van in front of my window making impossible to see anything. Room was darker than in photos and very hot. Heating was at full temperature. When I complained, solution was be patience, turn off heating and open doors and windows. AC did not work even if it was offered. We needed 4 hours to make the room colder with the lack of intimacy as the room was in a ground floor. Noises from the upstairs bathroom were very loud and the upstairs guests having a shower at 6am woke us up. I did check out and nobody asked about my stay. I got a survey and I wrote my comments and nobody asked me back. That is the reason why I am doing that review as it seems hotel owners do not care. Stay away of this overrated hotel. Money it is not worth for its location, even more when you are offered views which are not real. A hotel of this rating should take more care of comfort of patients. I would be quite sad to have paid for the full rate of high season for this place.

Please accept my sincere apologies that your recent visit to the property was not to your expectations. We appreciate every review and all feed back we receive from all sources as we constantly are reviewing our performance.

In the course of my day, I do try to discuss issues with our guests while they are at the property so that we have an opportunity to correct guest concerns. Often we can correct issues quickly or find alternate solutions. Also, I was disappointed to read that even after completing the post stay survey, you did not get a response. I will try to determine why these comments were not forwarded to me for follow up.

As the reviews on Trip Advisor are anonymous, I would encourage you to reach out to me to discuss your stay further.

Thank you again for your candid comments and hope we have a chance to discuss this stay in the future.
