Lots of review here have said that the rooms and/or food are awful. They aren’t. They may not be up to the standards of Secrets or Dreams, but the price point is a lot lower and the value for money that Canto del Sol offers is pretty good. And the staff here, a vital part of your holiday, are all superbly trained and unfailingly helpful.
Food first - there are four specialist restaurants (Mexican, Surf’n’turf, Italian and pan-Asian), and all are moderately good but you are limited to choosing one of these roughly every other night of your stay. On the off nights you get to eat in the canteen and here the food is less good. Local cuisine is served at all meals, as befits the mostly Mexican clientele, but many might find the food options a bit strange for breakfast, say. During the day there is also a small cerveceria serving excellent raw fish salads, and a snack bar by the pool (which is popular but here the quality is dismally bad).
Canto del Sol consists of two distinct areas, a U-shaped hotel opening on to the beach, and a series of suites across the road, where the tennis courts are. We stayed in a sea view room in the main hotel, and to be honest I wouldn’t stay there again if you paid me. The room was fine, the wifi worked, the sea view was nice, but on most days the loud music generally started at lunchtime and went on to 11 or 12 at night. The large central pool was packed, so if you like to spend your holiday having a gentle swim followed by a nap by the pool, go to a different hotel.
The beach is sandy but steep, resulting in strong waves and a wicked undertow, and not suitable for swimming. Oh, and in the middle of the main pool there is an island, and on that island live a number of handsome and large iguana. Sometimes they’ll join you for a swim. This clearly gave some guests a case of the horrors, but the way I look at it, it’s their home and they can swim where they like.
The villa area of the hotel features two smaller but quieter pools (iguana free), tennis courts, and a small gym. The rooms here lack any sort of a view but are generally larger and well equipped. If I chose to stay at Canto del Sol again, which I’m not ruling out, it would be in the villa area rather than the bedlam of the main hotel.
So, to sum up, probably slightly better than the *** rating, and great value for money, but not a luxury resort.
