Crystals was an amazing, unique experience in St. Lucia

Reviewed Mar 13, 2023
My husband and I stayed at Crystals for 5 nights in late February 2023. Normally we stay at high-end all-inclusives when we visit the Carribean and Mexico (solely for the ease), but we were going to celebrate our 20th anniversary (a few months early) and wanted something special and unique. Crystals hit the mark!

We stayed in the Papaya Villa, and it was more than enough room for the two of us. Clean, well-appointed and the views! Hands down the view from Papaya was the best we could have gotten anywhere on the island, period. Everywhere from inside the main room were views, views and more views. Absolutely stunning!

Every person working at Crystals cares about you and you feel like you are the only people there. Service is outstanding from the staff, whether you are staying at one of the villas or there for dinner and drinks. Our villa and our pool and deck area were cleaned daily. Breakfast was delivered every morning at the time we set, and featured so much variety, we hardly felt we could get through it (but we did). This is included in your stay. Note: They bring the food, but you will use the dishes/glassware for serving (they will clean the dishes with the daily housekeeping, but we always washed up right after eating to prevent bugs).

Dinner at Treetops is wonderful, indian-fusion-inspired and again in the most unique, tree house-type setting. It's a fixed menu every night ($70US/person - and worth every penny), but changes each night. You will not get bored. We ate twice while there. The bartenders (Hamilton and Ted) at Treetops restaurant are the best, and again, deliver a unique experience - every drink is custom-made for you, there is no bar menu, but instead you tell them what you like and they deliver the most amazing cocktails (of course you can get beer, wine, etc. if that's your thing), and drink prices are very reasonable (a huge plus!) You can mix and mingle with others if you like (guests, bartenders, or the owners Monica and Martin). It felt like we were a guest in their home.

We must mention their concierge Bradly and his team, specially Jonavin. Badley took care of everything transport/excursions. When we first arrived (we came by a different transport from the airport), he came up to our villa to check on us and set up a time the next day to plan our stay. This being our first time in St. Lucia, Bradley asked what we were interested in doing, and he arranged the most amazing custom adventures (complete with an the best rum punch and Pitons!) and made fantastic recommendations for beaches to visit (we went to Paradise Beach - affordable and great snorkling) and Anse Mamim (expensive, and we knew this going in, but worth it).

Here are some helpful (we hope) tips:

- The walk to Papaya Villa is a steep path, and may be a problem for someone with mobility issues. We walked around the grounds to see the outside of the other villas, and some seem more accessible. Papaya does have steps and stairs in the main bath/bed and in the main living area. Just something to consider.
- This is not your typical hotel-type setting: When we arrived, we were taken immediately to our villa (it was about 4pm) upon getting out of the cab. They came to us later to see how we were settling in, take care of room balances, set up breakfast, etc. You didn't have to leave the villa to do anything and there was no waiting. It was an unconventional "check-in" but it got us to the villa and those view even quicker!
- The kitchen is fantastic, and well-stocked. But if you plan on cooking, try to do so while there is daylight because there is little lighting above the stove. We cooked in 3 nights and it was already dark each night by the time we got around to it; wasn't impossible, but would have liked more light. There was dish liquid (no dishwasher), and we washed everything right away (again, didn't want to tempt bugs). The sponge had definitely seen better days, I would have brought my own, but it worked.
- Bugs: They are there, mostly outside, and honestly it was not a problem at all (we did keep things tidy/cleaned/organized in gallon ziplock bags) and we brought Off! mosquito coils and burned those from late afternoon until they went out. Not one bite the entire 6 days we were there. And we kept the sliding doors open all day bc of the breeze. Never used our DEET or Off bug spray, just the coils.
- They provide bar soap and dish liquid, but nothing else. Bring your own shampoo/cond/lotion. Not a big deal, but we ran out of our tiny travel items and had to pick something up at the grocery after an excursion one day.
- We knew this was off the beaten path, and while breakfast was delivered each day and there is a restaurant on site (closed on Thursday and Sunday), we knew we'd need snacks/something to eat if we ended up not going out for dinner off-site after a beach day or excursion. I brought snacks and easy things to make for dinner (frozen pre-grilled chicken and rice for staples) in our luggage. Our driver stopped at the grocery on the way from our airport transfer (it's only 10 minutes away) and we bought bottled water, rum, fruit juice mixers, and a few other staples and we were set. The rum is cheap here, and delicious.
- Know going in that this is set in the rainforest, slightly remote and different from from your typical resort and you will have an amazing experience.

We loved Crystals, it's unique setting, wonderful staff and owners that made this the most memorable vacation. We hope to be back!

Rainforest Paradise!

We stayed in the Calabash room at Crystal's and was amazing! The room is huge (which is good because other than the restaurant, there isn't a hotel lobby or common place to hangout). The styling and details of the decor are truly amazing--elegant meets woodsy. It had everything needed for a wonderful couples escape--complimentary coffee, milk, a bottle of wine, kitchenette (buy alcohol, snacks, etc before arriving), SmartTV (which we didn't watch bc we were too enamored with the AMAZING views of the Pitons), AC (which we only used at night bc we preferred opening the doors and feeling the mountain breeze during the day). One note, you are in the middle of a rain forest. So you need to be comfortable being in the elements. Bugs weren't an issue for us, but bring bug spray, we had little lizards in our room, which we welcomed bc they ate the bugs, and you may have to chase out a pesky finch if you leave the doors open. It was totally our scene, but may not be everyone's. Two minor suggestions: the mattress is fluffy but thin. Since it sits on a wooden slate, it needs to be thicker as you sink right down and feel the slate. We still slept well, but just FYI. Also, consider providing beach towels for the plunge pool use.

The Concierge was easy to communicate via whatsapp and very responsive. I booked my excursions individually, but wish I would have gone through Bradley bc he knows which companies provide the best experience. When we trekked up Skeleton Crusher (the road to get to Crystals), I was worried about how easy it would be to get up and down, but Johnny was a skilled driver and great conversationalist. You're in good hands with him and Bradley!

Lastly, The Treetop Restaurant was hands down the best food we had on the island. Idk what was in the bread, but it was like a savory donut. Addicting! It's a set menu and we were able to ask for seconds if we wanted (we definitely did for the spicy seafood soup!). The staff was so friendly and the cocktails were made based on "what you were feeling"--no set cocktail menu, which we loved.

Thanks for an amazing retreat and wonderful hospitality. Cant wait to return!

Husband and I just returned from a weeks stay at Crystals Villa’s. It was by far, the best vacation we’ve experienced yet. The accommodations were more than we had imagined. We were in total awe of the endless beautiful details throughout the Villas. So many unique and special touches. The staff were all so welcoming and helpful during our stay. The on site treetop restaurant was such a magical setting, the food and speciality cocktails were so GOOD! We enjoyed many meals there. We did outings daily & were not sure on how to navigate this initially as we did not rent a car. We were provided with the most exceptional transportation services which Crystals recommended; ‘Bradley’s concierge and transportation services.’ Bradley and his colleague Johnavin, were so attentive during our stay. They checked in daily, drove us safely to many incredible sights. They made our trip so special, helping us to experience the most while on the island. They were highly knowledgeable with planning outings and answering the many questions we had. They are so much FUN & we want to say the biggest thank you to you both for making our trip incredible!! You got us everywhere we dreamed of being and your above and beyond services truly made our trip. Would highly suggest this service if you wish to get the most out of your holiday experience. Many thanks.

We arrived rather late due to computers down at immigration so got there a bit tired. Checked in and on our second visit we were allocated the Lemongrass villa.

Had a great meal in the restaurant restaurant served by Monique with drinks from Ten.

Beautifully presented and delicious.

Checked in by Junior who wheeled our bags to the room.

Morning I awoke in the main bedroom which is huge! Beautiful vistas and a balcony with seating that overlooked the rain forest. Wonderful smells and magical sounds as the crickets and treefrogs gave way to the birds. Very comfortable bed and efficient aircon which I switched off when I woke.

The bedroom has a large semi open bathroom and a big dining room in the centre of the room. From the photos it looks like it is downstairs but us in fact upstairs so that was the first, and welcome, surprise.

900 square feet per floor..

The shower was good and no water supply issues. Note, the pebbles in the shower can be a bit uncomfortable unless you are steady on your feet and need a good foot massage. I used the bath mat and that worked a treat.

Housekeeping done by Albertha and Wilma. Place was very clean.

Some things missing like shampoo but quickly rectified.

Downstairs it is huge with ample seating areas including outside under a sheltering gazebo. . Very well equipped kitchen supplied with milk tea and coffee. The basket with goodies from Faye’s place in Vieux Fort was much appreciated.

The pool pump comes on mid morning and the pool was cleaned everyday. It was FREEZING! I’m used to slightly warmer water but I got used to it. Apparently it gets warmer in the summer so I now need to return to check it out…

Second bedroom off living area has its own shower and, being smaller cooks down quicker. No view to speak of - so put your friends - or snoring husband in here (!)

The second evening the restaurant was closed so we had drinks and nibbles in the villa with a friend. I was very surprised that, despite leaving windows open and lights on we had very few flying insects. Some mossies but not many.

Re Taxis. We were picked up by Jonathan who works w for Bradley and taken up the island by Bradley. He was excellent and very knowledgeable. Both drivers very good and I would be happy to use them again.

Next time we will be returning for longer to experience more of this magical area and place.

Thank you so much Monica and team for a great start to the holiday.

Possibly the best view of all St Lucia's hotels...a grand panorama from some of the villas of distant hills and the Pitons. Owners are often around and fun to chat with. Very quirky furnishings but the Pan-Asian style fits perfectly. Delicious food at the Treetop restaurant but no choice...we liked everything we got--the included breakfast is also very tasty. A fairly new supermarket, Massy, has opened in Soufriere so you could potentially do one trip there and stack up for a few days and take advantage of the kitchen which I believe all villas have. You would need taxis to get around but I rented a jeep from Cool Breeze which handled the terrible half-mile road linking Crystals to the main road. My only complaint is that the tap water is not potable--though if you don't mind a chlorine taste it is safe apparently--the hotel should provide good water for the guests. If you like the all-inclusive type place with tons of ameneties it would probably disappoint but I would stay again in a heartbeat and hope one day to return.

Thank you so much for your positive review.
Great to hear you enjoyed your stay with us.
Just to clarify a few points, all good hotels in Soufriere are a taxi ride from activities unless you are a beach resort, but then to visit any site you would have to take a taxi.
Our water source is the best, we use rainwater, treated filtered to make it portable, so we can control how it is processed, unlike the local water source.
We do provide bottled water on arrival and have plenty bottle water on the property should one prefer.

As you were only with us for one night, unfortunately, perhaps you did not know Treetop restaurant changes its menu every night, that is why we asked in advance about your dietary restrictions so they can do a menu for you. Delighted you enjoyed it.
Oh yes, the public off-road to Crystals is still the same as 17 years ago, not great even if we do work on it every year.
I agree with you Crystals is not for your average tourist we are for experienced travelers who want something different and unique.
Delighted you would like to come back one day.
Thank you
let me take this opportunity to wish you an amazing 2023
