Excellent vacations! Do not pay attention to a Karen's review!

Reviewed Feb 22, 2022
Spanish is the primary language in Dominican Republic. Not all the employees are fully bilingual, however they will do their best, in order to serve and accommodate you to the best of their ability. If you do not speak the language, plan accordingly.

It's an all inclusive and very affordable resort, located about 15 minutes from the airport. You can count on having fun. Music is played by the swimming pools during the day and there' a team of entertainers that will make it happen. The will lead an aerobics class, all the way to dancing local music on the side of the pool.

We did not spend a lot of time in the room, it's just too much stuff to do and 24 hours is not enough time to enjoy everything you want. The hotel is enormous.

What a shame that people who take the time to leave a bad review, focus on something bad that happened to them.

Despite what we saw on trip advisor, we decided to visit them and they did not disappoint us. From our arrival the attention was first class.

The porters Jerson and Eddy, thank you very much for the help, securing and transporting our luggage at check in and check out.

We were received by Eduar Espinal at the reception desk. Excellent human being, charismatic, kind and very good customer service. Thank you for the welcome and the cold President. A+

Maria at Orquidea Restaurant, the girl who welcomed us with her joy and good vibes. And to the waiters who never stopped with their service. Excellent and very good for the change of tablecloths every time a guest finished a meal. The food was very good and very varied.
To Carlos in the entertainment group and to the entire team, who gave everything every day to make the pool day a spectacular one. Keep up your good work!

In the pool in front of villa 16: Joan and Chocolate!!!! These two bartenders treated us wonderfully, always cheerful and entertaining. Together they are a winning team and I appreciate the attention given to me and my wife. They made us feel right at home.

Kudos to the hotel management, for making meals at lunchtime, in front of the pool. Nothing better than enjoying the day and not having to go out looking for lunch.

And how to forget Maxuelle in guest service. Thank you for going out of your way to get us a reservation for the theme restaurant and other attractions. 5 star service.

We went on vacation to enjoy Valentine's weekend to the fullest. Thanks to everyone on the staff for making our vacation unforgettable. So unforgettable, that we return in May to celebrate my birthday with our friends.

1. None of the staff spoke English and if they did it was minimal.
2. Big resort , when entering rooms it was very dim and creepy
3. Our refrigerator never worked so we had warm water, beer and soda
4. Outlets were outdated and would not even hold our phone chargers
5. Outside on balcony was very dirty, and you had plastic white chairs to sit on
6. The drinks were all watered down, unless you get wine or a straight glass of liquor
7. Buffet for lunch and dinner were recycled. The shrimp was not even cleaned. My husband got sick for 2 days because of things being left out ( beef, fish, mussels .. was the worst I’ve ever seen
8. Forget asking someone for something because it won’t happen, you literally have to ask 3 people for the same thing and maybe you will get it
9. The loud music by each pool was annoying, you can’t even relax
10. The showers we so high that you could probably break your neck or legs getting out of it .. (not for the disabled or elderly) I almost fell a few times getting in and out of the shower / tub
11. The mattress was old and hard !! I had to check for bed bugs. There was just a sheet over it (no top sheet , so it came undone as soon as you laid on the bed )
12. Do not rely on the from desk to book your taxi or shuttle, they never showed up and we were late to the airport
13. The garden grill was gross, I had the ribs and it was a chunk of meat, couldn’t even cut into it was so tough 🤮
14. The “entertainment” was not great at all. Would have been nice to hear music that was not from DR
15. I really think that this company of resorts do the bare minimum for just get people in the door.
16. The airport was a complete $hit Show Make sure you get there at least 3 1/2 hours before. The forms to fill out are online and the WiFi sucks.. If our flight did not get delayed we would have missed our flight

Let me start off by saying that everyone has different experiences and different opinions. I have read many reviews and agree with a lot, and disagree with others. Therefore, only you can really make an informative decision on what is important to you on vacation. I will try to cover as much as I can, and feel free to message me any questions. I am also attaching my YouTube video review so you can visually see what I am talking about.

We went on December 10-20th, 2021. Although, this was not our first choice, the deal was just too good. For three of us, 10 day stay, it totalled $2985 (not including insurance). Having been to Fantasia and other sections before, we were excited for such a good deal. Also, I knew that we would or at least should get recognition as VIP because it would be about our 12th time to this resort.

Our flight was through Air Transat. Very happy with the experience. Granted, we were a little spoiled because my mom had a leg problem so we were considered special assistance, so it was nice to get infront of everyone. Each seat had its own tv and you can watch movies, shows and even play games. I enjoyed challenging others on the plane to a game of tic tac toe. The drinks were included and you can order off the menu for food if needed. We got cheese pizza which was okay. Not out of this world, but also not bad.

Once we arrived, we got out of the plane and we were greeted by employees who help with special assistance. My mom was whisked away in her wheelchair and we got through the immigration part fairly quickly. They checked to see we had the arrival into Punta Cana papers. I did both entry and disembarkment papers before I left and never had any issues. I do recommend printing everything ahead of time just in case to speed along the process.

Once we got our luggage, we boarded the bus, but there was some kind of passenger delay. We waited for about 45 minutes before finally leaving. Took about 30 minutes to get to hotel and once there, we sort of separated ourselves to talk to Lady who helped us with our VIP request. I don't know if they got my email or not, but they also decorated the door and left chocolates with some fruit and champagne in the room to honour my daughter's birthday.

Our bracelets were gray and it allowed us to go to any section we wanted. We could eat everywhere and use all facilities. Typically, you would only be able to use some facilities of the other sections, completely forbidden to go to Fantasia or the adult section, Ambar.

We got to the room, first floor, 1112 right near the beach. I think since there is a trolly coming around so often, the distance didn't really bother me, but to walk from our room to Punta Cana lobby would be a workout - 10-15 min walk for sure.

The room didn't have any smells, but it was outdated. I mean it did have everything you needed, but nothing extra. The fridge was hot a lot of the time and inside wasn't keeping the drinks very cold. The safe was free to use. The TV was small (just pointing out) and had very minimal English channels. Two beds, pretty firm. Pillows not the most comfortable I have had. The thing I was worried about was the fan. Someone else reviewed the same thing and I agree. Looked like it was going to come off the ceiling how it wobbled oh my. Luckily we barely used it. I will say that I was bitten by a ton of mosquitos. One of the nights, we screamed because each of us heard a mosquito zoom by us right in our ears. We used OFF spray from home and even bought the one from the store. Still had over 40 bites. It could be that we were near the beach, or just time of year...but think of something strong you can take with you just in case.

The room also had a bathroom with the weirdest shower design in my opinion. The Jacuzzi button didn't work, but the shower didn't have a full door. It had a small part near the front of it blocked off by kind of glass ..but made it so hard to turn on the water unless you climbed it...and exposed area that you need to put a towel on the floor or it would be way to wet.

I am a big foodie person so the most important part for me is the food. It's like, why are you complaining? There is lots of food....but just because there is a lot of food, if it's not tasty, you feel there is barely anything to eat. The Punta Cana buffet was disappointing to me. They have your typical omelette, pasta, grill stations, but the main food was either cold by the time I sat down or just lacked flavour. Their salad selection was disappointing as well. Didn't always look fresh. Last time I was there they had pico de Gallo and it was so good...now they had just mixed salads...but always something in it that we didn't like. For example, corn salad, but had squid in it. Just a plain salad with corn and tomato or something couldn't happen....had to have tuna or fish or something. So again, this is me who doesn't eat fish complaining.. maybe you would like it. I just felt there weren't a lot of things I enjoyed even though I am not a picky person at all (other than fish). I was so surprised that the restaurants were a lot better. Usually in my experience, it was the other way around. I also think there wasn't a lot of options for kids. We ate most of the time at Fantasia and when we were there three years ago, much better selection for kids. They took out the kids buffet section and left a little one. Could have extended to be a lot bigger for them. They don't only eat chicken nuggets and fries haha.

We tried the buffet near the Esmeralda water park, not bad for lunch. I didn't leave hungry. We also tried buffet for breakfast near the Esmeralda Pool infront of beach. I found limited breakfast options as well as lack of cereal.

We were able to reserve as many restaurants as we wanted. We did 3 as the Brazilian was closed. We had mexican which was pretty good. Steakhouse was my favourite. Such tasty steak and veggies. The Ceasar salad was soo interesting. A big piece of bread, with a hole cut inside and the salad. Of course it had to have sardines....:( The Japanese I was excited for because my daughter wanted to see the first and everything. We saw other tables and the chef's going all out, and ours was very quiet. He lit up fire only at the end. So big disappointment....however the fried icecream was amazing!

Now on to the water parks. We got to visit all 3 locations. Esmeralda, Fantasia and main one near the entrance. I thought they were all great! The one in Fantasia had a little pizzeria and I enjoyed that for one of the lunches. Esmeralda was small, but still fun. The one near the front requires a Shuttle to get there. You can take the shuttle to Punta Cana lobby and wait for the water park trolly or you can walk. It's not that far. It had a small shack with drinks, nachos and hot dog. Some desserts as well. I was told that as an adult my time of having fun was over and I was not allowed to go down any slides due to my height. Although...shhhh...when life guard wasn't looking, I went down this one slide which was this big wide one hahaha. So fun!

Near the entrance of hot, there is a mini golf area, tree climbing course and bumper cars. All was for extra fee so didn't participate. The spa in this area is where we had a massage. I had the hot stone massage for 50 min and a relaxing massage. Anita, the masseuse was really good. It was about $100 US each with discount.

We did have an incident which I was disappointed with. Near the arcade in the Fantasia section, it was really wet after the rain. My mom slipped and fell, hurting herself real bad. With an already bad leg, it was upsetting. The floors can get really slippery, especially after rain. They should either do a faster job in cleaning up, as we actually saw servers dropping their drinks as they themselves slipped and fell. A manager came to talk to my mom, and offered to go to hospital. Maybe my mom should have, maybe we would have been able to sue...but honestly during Covid, my mom was not interested in leaving us and going outside of resort. He only offered to look into getting some kind of massage. After so many back and forth a over the next three days, signing forms and waiting at lobby - they gave her 20 minute free massage. So disheartening after everything. I'm not saying we should have millions of dollars, but one free 60 min massage too hard?

The entertainment team was nice. I didn't really see much of them throughout our stay. Only the last 3 days I saw more active daily activities. We did darts, and crafts for children. Honestly, my daughter kept me busy so can't complain.

There is an arcade in Fantasia section which you pay for and a teen club. We left her at the Fantasia kids club 3 times. Each time for an hour and it was really nice for her. She had an icecream party, watermelon decorating, etc.

The nightly shows were everywhere. Many of which rotated and you can catch at different sections. We opted to stay at Fantasia most nights. They usually had something for kids beforehand. We were surprised to see the same magician from many years before. We were sad that Michael Jackson wasn't there during our stay. Lion King was the best. I know they tried their best, but seriously other than Lion King, no other show stood out as for kids. So many dancers wearing barely anything with their butts shaking and all that. Many shows were just boring. They should have kept those shows for the other sections and bring back cool ones for kids like they had before.

The castle every night when working had a light show for about 8 minutes starting at 10pm..very fun and reminds me of Disneyland.

I'm not a big drinker, so cannot comment on alcohol too much, but I do believe it was a little watered down.

During out stay, we had to book Covid test within 72 hours. The doctor came to our room and we paid $85.US each. Hopefully as of the 28th, they will no longer require.

It was pretty windy during stay so we were out able to swim in the sea for about 1-2 days. Too scary for my daughter with the big waves. Although seaweed problem seemed to be a lot better than previous weeks.

The room key issue was real for us. Oh my gosh it was so annoying going back and forth. They were quite cold and ride about it and said my cellphone was too close to it and it disactivates. However I made sure they weren't touching at all and yet still stopped working. They really need to solve this problem.

Overall because we had the VIP experience, it was worth it. I'd give 7/10. However, not interested in returning at least for awhile.

Hello. We booked this trip back in September with 2 other couples, this review is for me and my girlified. I started to read the reviews on here and lots of them were bad. We stayed here from Feb. 4 to 14 , 10 nights. This resort is huge , My hat is off to all the staff , so friendly and nice , the buffet food was awesome morning , noon, and evening, you could always find good stuff to eat . The restaurants we went to were very good, we had 5 booked dinners , Japanese restaurant was on par with the Keg in Canada , so good and delicious plus it was entertaining. 2nd was the Brazil dinner , lots of different choices , 3rd was the Steak house , 4th was the Garden house , last for us was the Mexican. No real complaints this is how we rated them. The bars had good alcohol too , it just wasn't Dominican alcohol only. Clean rooms in good repair and the grounds where immaculate . The only complaint I have was that there was no diet pop at any of the bars or stores at this resort, although they stocked your room fridge with 1 small bottle. Being a diabetic I can't drink Alcohol drinks without it, so it limited me for being able to drink say rum , or spirits similar to it. Other than that I want to say thank you to the Grand Bahia Principe for a great experience and I would stay with them again .

Room tip: Bring bug repellent , fleas and some mosquitos , Bring medication to treat that as well , Benadryl, Calamine lotion , or anti itch cream .

We were very wary about our stay following the previous bad reviews but we were extremely pleased with our stay. The resort was spotless, the food was plentiful and varied and the restaurant was being cleaned constantly. There is a very good review by Ruby H which pretty much sums up everything we would have said in praise of this hotel and staff - please read that one

After not returning to DR for approx. 12 years and specially this resort maybe 19 years, our stay at this resort was horrendous. It was myself, my fiancé, my best friend and her husband who booked 2 rooms for 6 days and 5 nights.

Our intentions were to enjoy a relaxing vacation, with possibly a day or two for excursions, but it was far from it. I hate to post a negative review (this is my first Google review ever), but I have to warn people expecting to have a wonderful time at this place and finding out afterwards that it is nothing but a headache.

As a Dominican American the only good I can say is that all I could feel from the staff was an immense amount of love and all were super friendly, but I must advise the hotel itself on a rating level was extremely poor.

We checked in this past Monday at approx 3:30pm. Had no issues at that point, but following check in, when we made it to our rooms (Stayed at the Yellow Coded rooms at the Bahia Principe side) already had an issue with the key card. This was the first of many trips back to the desk to get the key fixed. My fiancé spent half of the trip at the front desk due to wait times when all he needed to do was fix the key.

The rooms once entered were not uniformly supplied. Our rooms were missing basic items such as toiletries, towels, beverages, comforters. Our room had a couple of things, but my best friend’s room was completely gutted.

In my room we had an issue with the ac, which barely worked and the fan was extremely loose, almost falling off the ceiling. The only reassurance of it not landing directly on us, was that the bed we slept on below was a canopy bed and hopefully that would break the fall. I wish I had taken a picture to show how loose it was, but it was falling from the very base of the fan. But it was an extreme hazard. The electric in our room did not function on the far side closest to the balcony.

In my best friend’s room, their outlets were barely functioning. Their phones would be plugged in and would not really charge well but did get really hot (these are new phones- iPhone 11 max). They said an entire night plugged in would not fully charge their phones.

Although the staff was really nice, when requesting assistance with things such as the keys and supplies, you’d have to ask multiple times to multiple people and pray someone will actually do something. For the first day to get into the room we had to call the desk 3 times using my best friend’s room’s phone. My fiancé ended up just going to the desk to resolve the issue, but getting locked out happened 2 more times that evening. It took 2 hours to get toiletries and other supplies the first day.

On the second day I felt extremely horrible because my fiancé went back to the desk to fix the key issue 4 times. From the moment we booked the trip my fiancé said he wanted to spend every waking moment on the beach tanning. I’m not even exaggerating, he went down the the lobby 4 times to fix the key issue. The desk person claimed there was no issue with the key and it is an issue with the battery of the lock, but they finally decided to send a repair person. When we returned to the room, the repair person arrived a while later. He stated that there actually was no issue with the lock and it was the key. The best solution he could offer was to go back to the desk and replace both keys. We returned to the desk the following morning (Day 3).

After returning to the lobby test again on the third day to replace the keys. The wait for the desk was extremely long (wait time is a hit or miss). Luckily as we were waiting we caught the manager coming back from lunch. We listed out all of the room issues we all encountered and especially from a safety standpoint, it was unacceptable. We spoke to him respectfully and he did the same to us. He was very understanding and came to the conclusion to switching our rooms.
*** Reaching a character limit- will continue in a separate post***

***Continuation***
It gets worse. So they make you believe that you are getting upgraded to VIP. It was the same exact room but on a different side of the resort. They moved us to the Punta Cana side and that took about 3 1/2 hours of waiting at the lobby. All the manager had to do was change our wristbands and have us sign a disclaimer that we will not sue the hotel nor employees agreement. The only upgrade we got was a tiny bottle of hotel body lotion and termites especially on the huge dresser. Yes you heard that right.. termites. And to throw out sweets I bought there because I didn’t realize until much later that it was infested. I definitely had to have eaten some.

Oddly enough I was on a walk with my fiancé and a random gentleman crossed our path and noticed we spoke English. Asked us if our room was as bad as his. Couldn’t help but agree. He was just as shocked as we were because it is so much different than reviews. The only thing that this place has going for it is the beach. Wish I spent more time on it than in that stupid lobby.

When it comes to the food, all you have is a buffet which they were sneaky to keep it vague. It’s only buffet food and it’s not even good and the food isn’t even Dominican food. We all got sick from the food. I especially, found myself constantly running to the restroom every hour or so. I have never been this sick in my life for a week straight and never seen anything like it.

I made conversation with a really nice employee (who was of supervisor status) who stated the irony is that he spoke to a Canadian man who got sick from the buffet food as well. He had to go to the on-site medical facility. Fyi for a visit it is $170 or $175 USD in order to be seen and prescribed something to aid. You have to purchase from the pharmacy whatever you needed separately from the visit.

Aside from the website being vague, to eat at the restaurants for 6 nights of stay you are only allotted 2 restaurant dinners. Restaurant food is better than the buffet food. The Brazilian Rodizo is the best of all, but they need to come around more often with the meats, especially the ones you liked. The Hibachi was good but the portions were very small and there was no real hibachi show. Just lit the fire once in the beginning and the end. Italian in general is my favorite and it was absolutely disgusting at the resort. The Garden Grill was alright but it took 2 hours to be served. I saw multiple people waiting around to be served. Luckily I wasn’t sitting in front of the grill or I certainly would have gotten hangry. I saw a couple just watching the chef making everyone’s food as they sat there hungry.
The number one thing I remembered from my childhood was having amazing ice cream on tap. There was very limited ice cream and it was only Dominican styled flavors. Complete let down.

The alcoholic drinks were not all inclusive. They were very limited and often they were additional charges for certain drinks.

Prior to the trip we were so exited of this to potentially be a wedding venue, but after this trip, I would like to stay far FAR away from this place. Don’t need my guests getting sick from the food nor brown stains on my white wedding dress lol. My family in Santo Dominigo are excited for a wedding here in DR, but Bahia Principe will NOT be it.
