A beautiful stay

Reviewed Jun 25, 2021
My family and I (myself, husband, 10yo and 7yo girls) stayed at Palmetto Bay for 2 weeks in June 2021. What a gorgeous resort! Upon arrival at the airport we were met by a driver who drove us directly to the grocery store Eldon’s before taking us to our home for 2 weeks in paradise.

The first thing you see when you arrive is the stunning ocean view down the hallway of the main office and restaurant. Maritza checked us in and was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Our driver took us directly to our bunglow, Casa Junto Al Mar and helped us unload our luggage. Maritza gave us our tour and gave our key to the castle!
The house was beautiful, cozy, and we immediately felt at home. One thing to keep in mind is that the home had A/C in only the bedrooms, which made the main living space and kitchen so hot that they really weren’t usable outside of the early morning. But I’ll get more into that later.
After putting away our groceries we immediately got our suits on and ran directly to the absolutely GORGEOUS private beach. Wow! Absolutely beautiful. We loved spending time at the pier gazebo in the hammocks after our long day of travel.
We ate at The Cove restaurant for dinner. Our waiter Joseph was wonderful! We shared the sampler platter. It was pretty good but after waters, tips and fees, the platter dinner ended up costing $120. Good but not that good!
The next 2 weeks were filled with so many fun and memorable experiences all over Roatan. Anthony’s Key, West End, West Bay beach, Little French Key, gumbalimba park, AJs Monkey & Sloths, catamaran tours, snorkeling, horseback riding.
We rented a car that was brought directly to us at the resort. We were so glad we did because while we loved the quiet serenity of palmetto, we needed the car to get around as there is not a lot to do close by the resort.
All in all we loved our stay and would stay here again.
Here’s a helpful pros/cons list :)

Pros:
Gorgeous grounds, beach, houses
Quiet, serene…away from the “touristy” areas
Driver picked us up and took us to the store
Rental car delivery
Help with excursions
Water coolers and affordable refills ($2 per 5 gallon)
So many gorgeous plants/trees/wildlife to see!
The servers Joseph and Fabrizio at the Cove
The snorkeling
The catamaran tour offered through Palmetto Bay

Cons:
Lack of AC in main living space. By 10am the main living space and kitchen were so hot we had to retreat to the bedrooms. Not usually an issue as we were not in the house most of the time but on rainy days or on a day someone wasn’t feeling well it would have been nice to live in the living area.

We had no hot water for several days. That was not the best scenario. It was eventually fixed but took several days and emails with no info on when we could get it rectified.

Location…it’s a pro for us but if you don’t have a rental car, you don’t have much nearby. Rent a car for sure. It would probably get pretty pricey to use a cab.
The restaurant is pricey for what you get so be prepared for that.
Lizards….not a con for us but they could be for some. They’re in the house. We enjoyed them but there was some poo on the kitchen counters so have some disinfectant wipes. I’m sure this is the case at many places on the island!

The beach is beautiful but there is lots of sea grass. If you’re wanting white sand hundreds of feet out, you won’t have
that here.

We would definitely stay here again. It really is a piece of paradise!

Spent a week in February with 6 people in a fabulous house on the beach. The staff was absolutely perfect. They arranged daily travel and excursions for us. The open air restaurant food was great and we loved the little bar and bartenders for happy hours. We took a day trip on a Catamaran that catered to every need. If you fish, snorkel or dive, arrangements can be made to leave right from the resort. i do not usually leave comments but this was one of the best trips. Also recomment a trip to the brewerey right outside the complex. Walking distance and very fun!

Room tip: We stayed on the beach but there are also great options that are more secluded

Pool and beach. Gazebo in the ocean. Great restaurant. We liked it so much we are going back again today. Very close to brewery. Safe because there is a gate . You will need a car or ride. It is a drive from West End or West Bay.

Room tip: Did not stay here.

We went to Roatan on a cruise and git a day pass for 10 USD to enjoy the facilities. Everything looks clean and there were barely any people around so it was very relaxing. We did encounter sand fleas at the beach though, so use the loungers and don‘t sit or lay in the sand.

Just returned from Palmetto Bay holiday vacation. We wanted a quiet place to call our own and we found it with some added bonuses. Palmetto Bay is a large tropical property of vacation homes, so we had our own villa (house). Well maintained and completely stocked with everything we needed. The resort is in a quiet area of the island surrounded by eco nature preserves, no other resorts, no noise except the birds, geckos and other wildlife and the ocean waves. Bonuses included the onsite restaurant and bar. Food is great with options for breakfast, lunch and dinner when you didn't want to cook your own meals. The bar was always staffed with great servers whether you sat at the bar, by the pool or on the beach. The beach is wide and long with a great dock and covered hut at the end with hammocks to enjoy and access to the ocean for swimming. Also available were kayaks and paddle boards lounge chairs were always available. Owner/managers Stephanie and James are always available, personable and honest and attentive to their guests and villa owners. The ocean and reef in Roatan are a natural playground to enjoy everyday. Although the resort is about 25 minutes away from busy resort areas of West End and West Bay transportation is just a simple request and the office makes arrangements as needed. If you want a resort feel in a private serene setting where the property is well manicured and maintained you will enjoy your stay. If you heard about the bugs, yep they are there too. They are on every beach on the island so come prepared with bug spray!!! Don't let those little pests keep you away from this oasis.

The island was beautiful, the coral reef amazing. I stayed at Palmetto Bay for 8 nights, hosted by Vacasa. I loved my time here and recommend any chance to get into the ocean and snorkel.

What saddened me and my experience here in Roatan was two-fold. The animal welfare and the environmental issues. I saw several animal abuse cases while traversing the island (1 at a restaurant called Hole in the Wall and 2 at animal parks). My other concern was the fumigation taking place on Palmetto Bay. The dense smokey fog made breathing unbearable. I felt like I was breathing in hazardous chemicals. I understand they do it for mosquito larvae but it didn't seem like it was killing the right bugs. Only all the other bugs were dead, the forest would go quiet (which is weird for the tropics) and alas, an hour later I was still getting bit by mosquitos and sand fleas. I think the fumigation is an environmental hazard to animals and humans and it's failing. Not to mention all the waste product that goes into ocean (the eel grass nursery) right off palmetto bay.

So, other than that, Palmetto Bay in Honduras was great. Just wish they would evolve into a location that values and protects the beautiful land that it has before they kill off all the diverse wildlife in the name of tourism and money profit.

Thank you so much for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Palmetto Bay. We strive to be an eco-sensitive community and do everything we can to preserve and protect the beautiful, natural area where we live. Unfortunately, 2019 saw a significant uptick in the number of cases of Dengue Fever on the island. The Municipal government has increased its spraying and abatement efforts and has asked that private communities do the same in order to protect the entire island’s population. In tropical climates, keeping mosquito borne diseases at bay while minimizing the impact on flora & fauna is a challenging and ongoing problem. Over the years, Palmetto Bay has worked hard to identify mosquito abatement measures that cause minimal harm to the environment while maximizing the effect on mosquitos and their larvae.
