A short walk from our friends home lead us to this lovely Inn ensconced in a bucolic setting. The patio setting is surrounded by trees, greenery, a tent which was being prepared for a Wedding reception and a space for an outdoor ceremony. The affable proprietor greeted and served us throughout our hour plus luncheon. There is a small, but workable wine list that offers several good value options in several sizes. A copy is enclosed. Our lunch choices were mostly Lobster roll with one burger. I am told the burger was tasty as was our Lobster roll. The filling on a small toasted bun was balanced and flavorful, but lacked a pronounced taste of this prized shell fish. For an additional $ 2.00, we upgraded to a side salad of Caesar and Greek, which were excellent! A copy of the menu is enclosed. Our tariff of $80 per couple, which included tax and gratuity, with one entree and one drink was a tad high, but still worth the investment because of the food quality, fine service and ambiance! While the weather is mild, take advantage of the patio setting, which will most certainly enhance your experience. Highly Recommended!

We were told there would be no room service; the dining room was closed and there would be a skeleton staff. There was no fridge in the room and the one role of toilet paper ran out quickly. These promises were kept. We were given pool towels but sign on pool said it was closed. We went in anyways. Second day they put a lock on it but didn’t secure it. We went in anyways. Lots of geese droppings around with no attempt to clean it up. But the place has charm and we will go back.

St. Mary downtown is pretty. To stay there for a two day get away from the city, the Westover Inn has a lot to offer. Foremost is the beautiful grounds. The cuisine offered is also very nice. As for the room we stayed, it was rather austere. The AC unit was regrettably noisy like a freight train at full speed. There was no drapery only economical, though functional , pull down plastic blinds. Due to the emptiness of the room, sound proofing is mediocre. We hope the Inn will try a little harder to meet 21st century expectations of the sophisticated traveller.

This inn was run down and had the bare essentials. Our room looked nothing like the pictures and was a dingy purple colour. The curtains had holes in them and the floor was painted unfinished plank boards with an area rug.

It gets a one star for cleanliness.

I did not eat at the restaurant so I cannot comment.

I rarely give bad reviews, but I was so disappointed by my stay here. The only reason I gave it one star was for its cleanliness. The photos on the website look NOTHING like the actual rooms. They are bare, sterile boxes with brown walls. No cosiness like they advertize. Cheap, cold flooring and the bare minimum of amenities. The tv is the smallest Ive ever seen in a hotel and has 2 converters that took all night to figure out. Next time I visit the area Ill definitely be looking to stay at a chain hotel in Stratford. At least I get what is promised.

Such a beautiful property! The rooms are cozy and comfortable. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. We stayed there instead of Straford to attend the an evening show at the festival theatre and we are so glad we did. So much quieter, and they have a lovely dining room with a gorgeous back patio to sit on. Highly recommend!

We stayed in a manor king suite. The room was large and adequately furnished, and quite comfortable. However it was very cold. Even though we were expected nobody had checked to see if the heating was on - it was not and when we turned it on it hardly made any difference. The portable heater in the room did not work either. However, after reporting it, another portable heater was brought up and eventually warmed the room very well. The room had cobwebs in the corners and the bathroom was very drab and ordinary - not what one would expect for the price. The staff on duty were attentive and pleasant. Our package included dinner and breakfast. The food was nicely prepared and presented and service was very good but the coffee was weak and not hot. .Our pre-dinner drink would have been more enjoyable had someone taken the trouble to light the fire in the lounge. When we asked about it we were told that they did not have any wood.
Overall this was a disappointing experience which could have been avoided had a lot more attention to detail been taken. Even though it is low season there is no excuse to allow standards to slip.

Excuse my digression from a foodie review of a lovely Brasserie porch experience with
a comment on the unhappy hotel guests who would prefer Stratford
next time. Well I think sadly you speak before you experience and you may
find a higher price and even lower service in the Festival City.

I am a local.
My experience with Westover is at the genesis stage as I have known
ever inn keeper ... and known them well.

Like any country, city, hotel, restaurant ... all have strengths,
I can suggest with all the places and spots above for a time, and a season.
Even with Westover there are very special aspects to
enhancing your experience.

Bottom line; what does whining do?
My reviews except for that hotel in Chichen Itza have all been positive
because I bring the positive with me or just shut up about things.

Did the guest actually take a walk in any direction from Westover Inn
for a plethora of pretty pathways, lanes and walks?
Westover is idyllic in its location ... forget the small hotel room and
get outside for one of the best town walks in Canada.

The Brasserie on Thursdays ... is one of my recommendations.
From the beginning Westover has offered an outside porch
experience varying from BBQ on the deck to full kitchen
experience.

The service from Becky who started 11 years ago at 15 was exceptional
along with the Brasserie menu and choices from the main menu.
Our foodie group of 6 loved the fare to savior and the fair evening
outside on the porch at Westover.

Visited the Westover in with hopes of a nice weekend of R&R. What actually ended up happening was a weekend of continued dissapointment. Arriving on Friday afternoon the unfortunate events started. Driving in instantly you could notice that maintenance clearly isn't high on the priority list grown over and uneven walkways lead into the reception area of the inn which was rather hard to find because there was nearly no signage and not a soul around to provide any assistance. Once I found the reception desk checking in went rather smoothly. Although we weren't offered any help with our bags. We found our way to our room and we're greater with a room that smelled musty and was approximately 30 degrees inside . After unpacking and settling in we decided to try and escape the heat of our room and head to the pool to cool off. We found a pool that the bottom was black and full of leaves , lovely ! Needless to say we did not swim. This was truly upsetting because it was one of the reasons we booked in the first place. The pictures on the website do not provide an accurate depiction, do not get fooled the way we did! I went back down to the front desk to ask if it would be possible to at least have the pool skimmed I was told that they were short staffed and nothing could be done. Only when lodging a formal complaint through trip advisor did we receive a call and we're told the pool would be cleaned he following morning. Although that was nice for them to offer that solution I feel as if the pool should have been cleaned prior to a summer long weekend? Once again this shows a real lack of pride of ownership. On the second night of our stay we decided to have dinner at the Inn restaurant to try and hopefully give them a chance to redeem themselves for our already lack luster stay. Now I'm not a trained chef or restaurant reviewer but I felt from the beginning I couldn't understand how it could have received such critical acclaim because the food was mediocre at best ! We started with "fresh" rolls that were actually still frozen in the middle and not even properly baked, moved onto obviously not house made pre packaged mini quiche appetizers. The main course was mediocre again venison for me which was rather tough,my wife had butternut squash ravioli which was nothing to write home about . All capped off with deserts that we could have bought from the frozen aisle of our local grocery store. When it was all said and done we were told that dinner was included in our room rate and all we had to pay for was drinks which was a pleasant surprise, the way we looked at it this was really just a way of them making up for the dissapointment of our stay thus far. Sunday morning we had breakfast at our expense which was actually quite enjoyable and was really the one highlight of our stay ! When it came time to check out Sunday morning the wheels really came off however. While we were reviewing our final charges I made the mistake of mentioning how we had been compensated for dinner the night before . We were informed by the inn keeper that dinner was not included and WE were expected to pay ! When we refused to pay for THEIR MISTSAKE we were told in the inn keepers exact words "that's very poor of you" in a angry and demeaning tone and this took place in front of other guests which were waiting to pay ! We were left angry and embarrassed ! Now I don't know where she learned customer service but in my world you should never speak to anyone with such a tone let alone paying customers !!!!! This was truly the icing on the cake to one of the worst weekend I have ever spent ANYWHERE ! I don't believe we are high maintenance people and we are very easy to please and I'm also usually one to laugh at poor reviews online and take them with a grain of salt and make my own opinions ,but I really felt the need to let my experience this past weekend known. This place really only gets by on the sweet young people who run the front desk and serve the patrons in the restaurant. I truly feel bad for them, they appear overworked and overwhelmed I can understand why now that I have had a run in with who they consider "management". The bottom line is steer clear of this place and avoid yourself dissapointment spend your hard earned money elsewhere!

Response from Westoverinn I, Owner at Westover Inn
Responded Aug 12, 2016
This review is the travelling companion of juliebulie84 who posted the "Ugh" review below. My comments in response to her review are equally applicable here, but I will reply to comments on dinner. It is true that one of our young summer student's mistakingly assumed that this couple was on one of our dinner packages, and that based on her mistake they did not then wish to pay for their dinner. During my phone call with him he suggested I bill this young high school student for their dinner assuming they were on our dinner package and not presenting a bill. I do not hold my staff financially responsible for such innocent slip ups, and did not take his suggestion of docking her pay for their dinner. It is also true they refused to pay for dinner when checking out. Ms. Broadbent, for whatever reason, did not mention this part of their stay in her review, nor did I feel it was necessary to raise the issue of their free meal in my response. So disappointed! We booked it as a rare weekend away and we've only been here not even a full night and already want to leave. Room isn't anything special and parking was hard to navigate as there aren't really any signs on the property showing you were to go. We went to the pool which was literally so dirty it looks like a pond. There were leaves and bugs floating everywhere and the bottom was brown from the dirt. Clearly it hasn't been swept or cleaned in some time. Considering its 30plus outside in JULY and a long weekend you would think this would have been up kept. We actually asked the front desk staff if they could send someone to clean it and we were actually told there was no one and they didn't have enough staff. The lady was very nice and the poor girl was running around trying to accommodate every one. Very under staffed.

Also, there is no air conditioning! There's a big loud dirty heater that blows warm air (so a fan) but nothing else. No ceiling fan, nothing. So brutal!

The property isn't very well maintained....could use some upkeep for sure.

In all honesty, for the price we paid we will not be returning. The above issues were enough for us to not come back. Way better choices out there.
