The Hotel Captain Cook is often celebrated for its prime location and grand, wood-paneled public spaces. Guests have called out the comfortable rooms, varied dining options, and the proximity to attractions like the Coastal Trail and Anchorage Museum. While the service receives compliments for being prompt and attentive, there are occasional remarks about less-than-welcoming front desk interactions. Opinions on value and room decor are mixed, with some travelers finding the rooms outdated and the pricing high, despite the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the establishment.

Lower your expectations, and you’ll appreciate the fact that this is probably one of the best hotels in Anchorage. You’ll enjoy coming to a clean room after a long day of activities (as long as you ask to clean - it’s not done by default), or the breakfast with full service at the Pantry, or other hotel facilities. If you have a car, there’s really no point coming here (parking is expensive), but if you’re on foot then the location is great as other posters mentioned. And now for the big con: the NOISE.
This is an old hotel, and at least in building 3 you hear everything - the loud TV, the reversing truck (?) at 5:30 a.m, the planes from the nearby airfield and worse of all - the trains and their horns. I’m really surprised that no one has mentioned it before.
Triple glazed windows should solve much of the problem.

The hotel here is nice, large comfortable rooms with amazing views. Hotel has only on restaurant open but otherwise is running normally.

Hotel is close to several restaurants and breweries, however, one must thread though panhandlers and intoxicated/high people even directly outside of the hotel.

Many of the art galleries are closed, leaving mostly gaudy tourist shops. Try the Fat Ptarmigan, 49th state rooftop, and snow city cafe for food...

Very easy access to the Tony Knowles trail (check out pablos for bikes), point north or south and the airport including lake hood floatplane area.

COVID considerations
- masks required in all common areas, not enforced though most people comply
- rooms are still serviced here

Over the years we have stayed at the Hotel Captain Cook and enjoyed our stay. The hotel has many beautiful features especially in the lobby area but the rooms are starting to look a bit tired. We were in rooms 1345 and 1545 and the views were spectacular. A previous reviewer talked about the room next to the elevator shaft and hearing the noise of the elevator going up and down. We were originally in a very similar room and went to the lobby to ask for a change of room which they honored. There is no way a person can even begin to sleep in a room with that constant noise.

We booked through Expedia and received a $30 credit for The Pantry which was mainly a breakfast restaurant. I would highly recommend their food.

We took a train to Whittier due to the lack of car rentals and it was a beautiful trip. The train depot was less than a half mile from the hotel which was very convenient. We went on a fishing charter in Whittier and brought back fish to put in the Hotel Captain Cook's large freezer.

Where to Start. My Wife and I decided to try a Valentine getaway and decide to splurge and go to the Captain Cook a premier Alaskan Hotel. We even booked Captain's deck Deluxe room. First thing is their is no parking so we parked at the Captain Cooks parking garage "right next door" to find out that the hotel no longer validates parking no problem it states 30 Dollars max charge by the way after checking out less then 24 hours later we were charged 40 Dollars.

At Check in was the first time the hotel even looked at the request that i have placed when booking the room rather then emailing prior that the request could not be honored.

The light's in the "Newly Remodeled" Captain's Lounge on the Captains deck flickered and was very annoying.

To get to the pool and back that is in the basement we had to travel down the staff corridor because their was no access from the smaller tower direct to pool. I hope they plan to refurbish the pool area since the tiles are slick "Saw one kid slide on his behind, and the racks they have are rusted and have broken hooks.

The room was smaller then rooms I have had on cruise ships and at 12:30 that night until around 1 AM their was a shaking and terrible noise that I con only compare to an earthquake " by the way i check and their where no earthquakes so it must of been the machinery in the building.

No i would not recommend the Captain Cook at this time until the owners put some more money and love into it to bring it back to it's glory

Tip: If you are booking ask for tower three and a room number in the low 60s to be close to the quietest street, 4th Avenue. Tip: A corner room in the hotel is always a sweet location as they are a little larger. Tip: Their health club and pool are first class and open early and close late. Tip: If you are there in the winter and parking a car in the garage, use the basement - its the warmest place in the garage. One can't go wrong eating at the Crow's Nest for dinner or Fletchers for lunch or dinner.

All the staff is outstanding. Comfy beds and the rooms had everything we needed, plenty of towels, pillows, a fridge, etc. They were constantly cleaning, enforced mask wearing, and sanitizer at every entrance.

We also ate at the Cafe, Fletcher's and Crow's Nest. The food and drink selection was plentiful and most importantly of all tasted great! Of course we had wonderful seafood.

The hotel is close and convenient to everything. Even a walk/bike trail.

Due to Covid-19 a few places were closed which is understandable. We felt the hotel did everything to keep their guests safe and healthy.

Upon our early arrival in Anchorage (first time ever), we were greeted at the hotel by Harley who made us feel very welcome, promised us our room would be ready soon, and gave us some tips for lunch while we waited. This was just the start of a stellar three days here in terms of customer service. Harley epitomized the high bar for all staff at Captain Cook.
The hotel itself is a bit older, but spotless and our Junior Suite (in Tower 3) allowed a stunning view of the mountains while allowing us to relax with a bit more space. The common areas of the hotel exude a feeling of rich history as well as all the modern necessities of a fine hotel.
Four other front desk employees that merit a shout out are: Ryan, Hubert, Michael, and Antonia who each handled questions and suggestions in a friendly and professional manner.
The morning breakfast was a daily highlight as Rayli (the hostess) as well as Cindy and Ann (our servers) provided us with a delicious, yet peaceful start to our days despite being crazy busy.
The hotel's basement Health Club was amazing as the sauna, lap pool, and steam room allowed us to relax after some strenuous, outdoor activities. Especially professional and helpful in the Health Club was Thomas who consistently maintained the same level of great service that the previously mentioned hotel staff provided us.
All in all, this was an awesome place to stay for our first ever nights in Alaska

Alaska is hands-down my favorite state. In fact we bought property in Ninilchik Alaska back in 2004! I’ve probably been to Alaska now nine times maybe 10. I’ve never seen the Aurora Borealis. So this trip is specifically in the winter to see the Aurora Borealis. Sadly it’s supposed to snow the next three days and clear on the day that we leave. We arrived last night at 11:30 PM absolutely exhausted. Ryan did not just give me a good room but he gave me a great room. Room 1661 is a corner room with a spectacular view of Anchorage. There’s a bedroom and also a sitting room. I will attach pictures. The landscape is snowy and the bay is frozen over. It looks like a true winter wonderland! This morning we woke up to all of the beauty of Anchorage. I called room service and Marko brought me a wonderful breakfast! I think it was called the hungry mans breakfast. My husband and I split it . There was plenty of food. I just now ordered extra coffee as my husband is on cup number four and drinks a lot!
Sadly I did not get down to the pool or hot tub. We are in tower number three and I really can’t say enough good things about it. Last night we arrived late and Donnie parked the car for us since Valet had gone home. Probably my only complaint is that I didn’t ask about parking before I came. They said there’s a neighborhood parking that is $30 for the night but then they nickel and dime you. The Captain Cook hotel charges $35 for 24 hours for valet parking. I thought that was a much better deal even though I hadn’t planned on it. I would stay here again in a heartbeat! It’s a fabulous place with wonderful service and good food!

As I write this from my room at the Captain Cook, I think of how the first few minutes at a hotel can set the tone for your entire stay. In this case, The Captain Cook failed miserably. I had stayed here about 7 or so years ago and things certainly have changed.

Imagine, arriving at the hotel at 1130pm and being told that your room is not ready? REALLY?! Or actually I believe it was the room they had for me was not shown as being cleaned. I have worked in the travel industry for close to 40 years, and note, I was not being offered a comp or discounted stay, I was paying a regular rate. Never in my life of travel had I been told a room was not ready at that hour of the night. At first I thought they were kidding, but no, Dexter at registration was serious. He did try to get the situation taken care of but it took almost 30 minutes of back and forth to finally get us into a room with the two double beds I had originally asked for. I’m not sure where this room magically appeared from, but why he couldn’t get it at the start is a mystery to me. Now at the end of our stay, I wish he had not been able to get this room for us! And here’s why…

That reason is, our room was adjacent to the elevator shaft! And anytime the call button was pressed, the elevator went zooming past our wall! OMG, I’ve never ever experienced anything like this. How in the heck was this hotel put together, and why abut a guest room to an elevator shaft? Put storage or whatever in that area. At the very least tell the guest about the location of the room and the situation….and perhaps try to move them the next day if a better room comes available. The rate I paid was a very good one, but if I was paying the $400 or $500 a night rate that Anchorage rips off their visitors with in the summer I would have been even more furious. Oh, I did get a one time $30 credit for a breakfast, but only because I suggested it once we finally did get this gawd awful room. There were a few other things that made this stay a nightmare but not worth going into. I originally booked the Marriott and should have stuck with it, I’m a Marriott Platinum Elite and am sure I would have been treated much better staying there. Oh well, I’ll never know, but what I do know is that I’ll never stay here again, nor will I recommend The Captain Cook.

Friendly helpful staff, stunning views, great breakfast. Some of their normal amenities were suspended/limited due to Covid-19. We were upgraded to a corner junior suite on the Captain’s Deck (17th floor) with a spectacular view of Cook Inlet. Breakfast in the Cafe was excellent with large servings and “Sindy” provided exceptional service. Fletcher’s restaurant was excellent also with terrific service. It was less expensive than the Crow’s Nest and the food was excellent. I had the grilled scallops with mushroom risotto. This was the best risotto I’ve had since I lived in Italy. We would stay here again.

The I prefer member rate is a discounted rate available to members of their reward program, it is usually worth it to join each hotel chain's reward program, so as to accumulate points for future stays. It also allows you more time to cancel if needed. Best available is their general rate. Stay more, save more would be a discounted rate if staying a certain number of days. Having stayed there, I would recommend getting the breakfast package as it gives you a full breakfast for no additional cost, even if ordered by room service.

I did not do any Laundry, but they have Laundry service. I assume will be expensive, unless you look for a coin Laundry outside. I think there is an iron in the room, if not you can always ask reception to borrow one.
