Capitol Reef Resort impresses many guests with its cleanliness, particularly in the rooms and bathrooms, although some suggest the pool requires additional upkeep. Its prime location near Capitol Reef National Park is a highlight for nature lovers, offering scenic views and new cabins. However, opinions on the service and amenities are divided; while some guests commend the friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere, others find the service lackluster and the amenities insufficient, especially for a resort. Travelers also note the rooms and decor could benefit from an update, questioning the resort's overall value for money.

We picked this hotel due to the proximity to Capitol Reef NP & for the fact it had nice unobstructed views of the red rocks behind the hotel. We had a room for one night in the block on the right at the back of the parking lot, which was perfect as it was easy access & you can park right outside the door to your room. Check in was nice & pleasant (I’ve never had any issues as always book direct with hotels rather than through comparison/booking sites – the peace of mind is better than saving $20 in my opinion), with friendly staff & a nice reception area.

The room was large and clean with 2 comfy queen beds & a balcony overlooking the rocks which was lovely. The balcony had a sort of outdoor carpet on it & a couple of chairs to sit & take in the views. We didn’t spend a massive amount of time in the room due to exploring through the day, then having a meal at the on-site restaurant & then leaving early the following morning, but we did enjoy the stay & would come back again when passing through.

The only slight negative to be aware of is that the photos of the resort pool/hottub look very slick & high end, but the location of the pool is not quite as awesome as the pics make it look. There are buildings around & while it's still nice, it's not quite as upmarket as the pictures make it look.

Just one mile west of the Capitol Reef Entrance is the town of Torrey, UT where the Capitol Reef Resort welcomes you. We were able to book a King room with balcony which looks out into the beautiful sandstone mountains. At night, in our balcony, we were able to see so many stars. I have never seen the big dipper so big before I can almost grab it. The nighttime sky amid a backdrop of mountain outlines, was beautiful. Also, if interested in a glamping experience, you can also book rooms in teepees or wagons but these sold out fast. We were impressed with the interior in the room and it was clean. The bed was very comfortable. Complimentary toiletries were provided and I loved the smell of the products they provided (shampoo/ conditioner and soap). Mouthwash and q-tips were even provided. The toilet had very strong water pressure (you’d get sucked in if your butt is too close!) which is a great thing, considering being in the middle of nowhere. However, since it is a resort, you don’t get free breakfast. There is the resort’s restaurant, Pioneer Kitchen, which served good food. There is no public computer in this resort if you need to print something. There is a llama corral close to the resort which you can do llama hiking adventures with. There are also trails close behind the resort for easy trekking. Overall this is a great place and would highly recommend.

This is no fancy resort with a spa. It's more like a Holiday Inn with some fun extras. I stayed in a traditional hotel room, which was perfectly clean and comfortable and surprisingly quiet, given that there were quite a few kids around. Clientele was mostly retired couples, families and harmless old men on Harley Davidsons. But there are also some stylized Teepees and covered wagons converted into comfortable accommodations that kids would find terrific. They have a variety of things to do, like hiking with pack animals (llamas) or jeep tours of the national park. This is where the resort really provides value. Capitol Reef National Park is very inaccessible and the only way to really see it is via one of the jeep or hiking tours. I took the jeep tour for $200; not cheap, but I got what I paid for. Tour guide Mason was great. The restaurant is so-so, but convenient. Not a lot of other options in town.

We had a 2-bedroom cabin which came with a pull out sofa in the living area, kitchenette, 1.5 bathrooms, and deck with grill.

Overall we were happy with our stay here. The space was nice and the location was great to visit Capitol Reef NP. We did not have as luxurious of a room as pictured on the website, and I suppose with the largest cabin on property (the 2-bedrooms), it was expected. It was, however, still nice.

Our cabin was very clean when we entered, and we are very particular so this is a good thing to note. We did have to wait until almost 5 pm to check in which is a terribly late check in. Apparently they were short-staffed in housekeeping. We were patient and were understanding, however, check in should be at 2 or 3 in the afternoon. A 4 pm check in that gets delayed should be given at a reduced rate.

The other issue we had is laundry. The website notes that laundry facilities are available for guests. The laundry room had 1 washer and 2 dryers. Every wash cycle is $3 and every dry cycle is $3. That is a crazy amount of $ to charge guests. Not only that, there is a sign in the laundry room that reads if you need detergent or quarters to operate to see the front desk. My husband went to the front desk and was told to drive to the Chuckwagon general store, about 10 min away. He had to do this twice to get all the quarters we needed for our laundry. VERY inconvenient, esp when a sign states to simply get quarters from the desk. A coin dispenser or credit card swipe machine or free machine would be a lot better.

Also our Keurig machine stopped working on our last morning. Again, minor inconvenience, however we need coffee to get moving in the morning...

Ok, now for the good. The space of the cabin was good, location good, view was beautiful, beds comfy. The deck was nicely sized and the grills have gas piped in, which is convenient.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay but opted to cut it short due to the few inconveniences. It was still a nice stay during our time visiting Capitol Reef.

Pluses
Ample parking
Breakfast was hot, fast and really good every day
Reasonable rates
Easy to find
Very good wifi
All staff members were professional and polite

Minuses
As others have noted, the reality of the rooms is a little less shiny than the website photos. I expected more when I arrived
Rooms are a bit small
If you have a patio that means people walk across your patio because its the only way they can get to their patio
As other have noted, I Arrived at 5PM, room not ready. Could I come back in an hour?
They charge your CC for the full stay before you arrive, I dont recall another hotel with that policy
I did hear a lot of piumbing noise and footfall sounds from adjacent rooms

I was in a King Patio room, I would stay here again for a nite or two.

We really enjoyed our stay at Capitol Reef Resort. The grounds and surrounding red rocks are beautiful. Our King Cabin was very well decorated and worked perfectly for our 2 night stay. We really enjoyed taking advantage of the onsite fire pits in the evening for having a glass of wine and taking in the surroundings. We did not eat at the onsite restaurant, but did walk across the street to the Rim Rock Patio restaurant for takeout.

Worth mentioning during COVID times, of all the accommodations we stayed in during our 2 week Utah Road trip, Capitol Reef Resort appeared to be taking the least amount of precautions. I did not see 1 staff member wearing a mask, they only had a glass barrier at check-in, and they were still offering housekeeping, which I was surprised about, although we left our 'do not disturb' sign on because we weren't comfortable with having someone in our room during the pandemic. It is worth mentioning, that we did not observe anyone in the businesses/restaurants we visited in Torrey wearing masks, so it wasn't just this resort.

The marketing guys do a great job of bigging this place up on the website! It's not in any way uncomfortable but it's nowhere near the luxurious accommodation it appears to be online.

Our "Traditional" room was basically a motel room within the block which was comfortable and quiet but pretty basic with a tiny bathroom. Everything you need but nothing really special.

The staff on check-in were very pleasant but a little dismissive when we went to ask about doing laundry the next day. The onsite laundry is, if i recall, $2 for a wash and $2 for a dry plus $2 each for detergent and dryer sheets. Did a good job though!

The onsite restaurant looked a little depressing so - other than breakfast which was quite nice - we ate elsewhere.

Definitely convenient for the park entrance though and no real complaints

First of all, you cannot park anywhere near the cabins and hauling large heavy bins of groceries and supplies when you didn’t plan on it was very inconvenient as there was no mention of that at the time of reservation. We rented the two bedroom cabin for 3 nights that accommodates “six” but six is a stretch, these are teeny tiny. everything was There’s only dishware for 4 and table inside for 4 and just the bare necessities are provided. The kitchen set-up is not functional at all with no counter space and the table is in the way of opening the fridge. I planned ahead to make meals during our stay and it was a huge hassle. The push start was broken on the barbecue and useless when you don’t have a lighter or matches for backup. Every room had a ac/heater unit but all three were broken giving a E7 error. The fan in the main bathroom didn’t work either. The bathtub shower set up has the plug in the middle and every one of us kicked it during showers. One plus is that we always had hot water for showers. We didn’t have house keeping come once during our stay and even asked for new towels that never came. The screens and patio furniture are filthy and you’d think they’d try to clean up the spiderwebs and nothing is provided to clean or wash anything. The garbage cans provided periodically out side the cabins were full and not functional for getting rid of trash from our cabin. The beds are comfortable but I don’t think they launder the comforters just change the surrounding sheets and they badly need laundering as they are clearly dirty. We had several run-ins with scorpions and tarantulas so we didn’t leave shoes outside. There were also several large rat traps surrounding our cabin. The view is beautiful from the cabin expect for the huge debris piles which you could clearly see attracted rodents and hornets. They need to put curtains or something on the upper windows because at the crack of dawn there’s no escaping the morning light. For the size of the “resort” the pool and hot tub size is laughable. The fire pits fill up around 6 way before dark and people don’t leave so your SOL if you don’t go early. The lights on the Wagons & Tepees glow all night which look neat but I can imagine for those staying in them might be annoying. The restaurant on property is ok but gets very busy. We got pizza across the street at Rim Rock one night and they changed us a 20% fee for doing takeout, ridiculous. This is a beautiful area to visit and I hope they improve the “resort” for those that travel here.

What can I say? I wanted to stay in a teepee! But they also had hotel rooms and chuck wagons and individual cabins, so you have several choices of how to experience the area.
Downside of a teepee, no bathroom, very small entry into teepee and not sound proof. That said, the bathroom is located near teepee and it is just for you. It is a full sized bathroom with a key to lock your things inside.
The inside of teepee is nice but we were a little cold even with small space heater provided. The flaps of the door are zippered and come with a lock. But the whole thing is velcroed to the teepee, so if someone really wanted in, it wouldn’t be hard. But, I didn’t worry about anyone getting in, felt our stuff was safe but I wouldn’t leave valuables there. Also, if you get up during the night to use the bathroom, you gotta unzip the door, which will probably wake your partner up, and you’ll need a flashlight or your phone to see.
But! Wow! The area is gorgeous and the night sky you see when you have to go to the bathroom will make you stop in awe and make getting up and going outside a little more tolerable.
Also, they have these awesome fire pits with chairs around for each group of teepees and chuckwagons. And they are gas but look real and are super inviting and you can visit with other guests. Don’t forget to buy (or bring your own) s’mores kit from the gift shop. That was fun and tasty. (The roasting sticks are wood, so just throw in fire when done).
I really enjoyed the teepee experience but my husband not so much. He rather had been in a private cabin.
They also have a restaurant that was pretty good. You don’t have a lot of food choices out here, but you can bring your own food.
I highly recommend coming to Capitol Reef National Park, and the resort is close to the entrance and is nice.

We stopped by at noon and they let us check in early. Room and bed were comfortable. We wiped down all touch surfaces we could think of as it was unclear what precautions they are taking. Front desk clerks were masked. Property has a pool and spa. It does have more of a motel feel than a resort. Restaurant across the street has good pizza and an outdoor patio. There is a clear partition around the pool though and between the evening and morning we were there, we saw 9 dead birds that had flown into it. I spoke with the on duty manager who said she would talk to the general manager about putting up some decals or distractors to help with this. If you stay here and nothing has been done, please ask about it and I’d be curious to know if they did anything. Be sure to drive a short distance away from the lights (maybe panoramic viewpoint) and enjoy the stars...it was easy to see the Milky Way, even from the hotel.

I would agree that calling is the best option. There are facilities but not sure about services and sometimes they are not one day service.
