My daughter and I had a wonderful time at Elk Island Lodge. My daughter caught 56 fish including a 39" Pike while fishing less than half the time. I fished hard and caught 161 fish including a 43" Pike. The Lake Trout fishing was off the charts every time we tried for those. Our guide was great, our cabin comfortable, and the service and logistics were excellent. I would highly recommend Elk Island Lodge to anyone who wants a relaxing fishing vacation with plenty of action.

There are many fishing lodges in Canada and I keep going back to this one. Owner Greg Dick understands that a Canadian fishing experience is as much about customer service as it is catching fish. You'll get plenty of both. His staff is professional, friendly and very helpful.

To be clear, this is a fishing lodge. People come here to fish, and it is some of the best fishing in the world. Of all the guests, my father and I were the only new guests - everyone else was a repeat guest (some many times over). The trip was well-organized, you have plenty of fishing time, and you can take advantage of fly-in trips and evening fishing to enhance/expand your experience. The scenery is breathtaking and you are truly getting away when you are at Elk Island.

We selected the 4-day fishing package, which (at the time of this review) includes your flight from Winnipeg to the fishing camp, three meals plus nightly appetizers (beverages/snacks are a la carte), your lodging, and a fishing guide with boat, etc. Most visitors bring their own fishing equipment, but my father and I rented ours when arrived - small fee and equipment was entirely adequate (i.e., we still caught plenty of big fish).

First, I will say that Elk Island staff are highly responsive and well organized. I had not been on a multi-day fishing trip, nor am I a seasoned angler, so I was a bit intimidated and didn't know what to expect (most of the guests were very experienced anglers). Questions were asked and answered by the owner, Greg, very promptly, politely, and with good detail. There are some resources on the website, but Greg will fill in any gaps quickly.

Second, Greg and the staff are very friendly and highly attentive. Our guide, Freddie, was amazingly patient with us and made sure we were never short on fishing spots and action in the water. The guides can cook your morning catch for lunch - amazing. Thank you, Freddie.

Fishing was incredible, both in volume and in size of the fish - northern pike, lake trout, and walleye. We were shocked and I am so disappointed I did not bring my camera - big mistake (was too afraid to bring cell phone on the boat in case I dropped it).

The cabins all have lovely lake views and were entirely adequate with a sitting room in the front and bedrooms in the back. Plenty of hot water for showers. Be sure to bring hardy rain gear and layers for cold weather - my rain gear was way too light. Also, bug spray/bug suits were a must for me (others were fine with just bug spray). In early June, the mosquitoes were fierce.

Food was hardy, tasty, plentiful, and spot-on for a fishing excursion. They do have a small bar that can cover most mixed drinks; selection of beer was limited, but no one seemed too worked up. Guests seemed to bring in own snacks/wine/etc.

We've been to Edmund 2 other times each for 12 days. So we know this outpost as well as anyone alive. But this 12 day trip was a total mess and complete rip-off!
The main problem stems from very poor overall planning from the owner and a total lack of investment or even caring about the outpost. What he needs to do is actually stay at the Outpost with his family for a few days, which he has never done, to see what it is like now and how exposed a family is there with no help in sight.
Where to begin...
First off our 12 days trip turned into a 10 day trip because of the weather and lack of the aircraft available to transport all the guests to their rented accommodations. Was their any discount ever offered for us losing over 16% of our vacation? And having to spend $100's of extra dollars when we had to scramble to find lodging for my family when the flights were suddenly cancelled? Nothing
Secondly, the plumbing stopped working at the Outpost on day 7 of the 12 day trip. Any discount or apologies for that? Nope
Next, the water totally stopped working on day 9. Any discount offered? Nada
Oh, on day 3, the generator start switch came undone and went inside the control panel. Keep in mind, no generator, no way to communicate with the outside world, cause there was no satellite phone as was promised, and we're truly isolated from literally everything, including any help. We managed to sorta fix that using some ingenuity and hard work.
But at this point I was very worried about the overall well-being of my family and actually surviving this trip intact.
But again, the owner never offered any compensation and then started to blame us for his basic failure to provide a working facility/lodging, in the middle of no where, with no help in sight, with no back-up plan.
And even though this sounds like it was about the money, it really wasn't. We'd gladly pay the almost $20,000 he charged us if this facility was kept in reasonable working shape. Remember, we had done this twice before over the years. We knew what we were getting into, but what we didn't know was that he had let the facility get worse and worse over the years. And in fact, told us the opposite and that he had upgraded everything since we had last stayed there. I just don't know of any other way to ease our pain and get him to feel some for what he did to my family other than some sort of compensation and restitution.
As I said, he needs to stay there, with HIS family, to truly understand what he is doing to people. And what risk he is putting them in. And then maybe HE will start to plan better, manage better and provide a better working facility/lodging that people can enjoy it for all he is charging people to stay there!
Besides all of this nightmare staying there, the real reason we have gone to Edmund is the fishing which has been fantastic in years past. But unfortunately that has gone down considerably since our last visit 3 years ago. I'm assuming it's because of the pressure of him putting more and more guests on the lake.
Anyway, there are many, many choices for Outposts in Canada, most with more caring and smarter owners. I strongly suggest you stay away from this one! As I certainly will... forever!

This is our 4th year going to Edmund Lake Outpost as part of Elk Island Lodge under ownership by Greg Dick. There are 4 people in our party and we fish for 8 days in July. I have to say this is one of the nicest outpost cabins our group has been to or heard of. There is an ice machine, electric and propane fridge, deep freezer, WiFi, satellite TV, indoor plumbing (sinks, shower, toilet), ATV to haul gear. I have read all the reviews and offer the following comments. This is an outpost set up and as a group, we expect there will be and have been issues. One year the water pump in the lake was overturned by the waves. We fixed that. We have had to change propane tanks and relight pilot lights on the stove and water heater. This year the generator quit running properly and the toilet had some issues. We just hooked up the back-up generator and got things back online quickly. Had we known there was a screen on the generator that needed cleaning we could have solved that issue ourselves (we now know how to clean it so will not have that issue again). We let Greg know about these issues and he had people flown out the next day. All issues were resolved. We always request a satellite phone and rifle (in the event of bears) and both have always been provided. We spoke to Greg prior to our trip and put in some “nice to have requests”. All of those requests were fulfilled when we got to the outpost this year. As for travel, there can be; delays due to many things (mechanical, weather etc). I don’t know of any industry that will compensate you for delays due to weather. Again, this is a great outpost cabin (affectionately referred to as the Taj Mahal by our group), well run and managed and we have already booked our trip for 2018 to Edmund Lake. Cant wait. Fish on...

This was our FIFTH Visit to Edmund Lake and it has gotten better and better every time! First of all when travelling to an OUTPOST you need to realize a few things ...You are not going to be in a 5 Star accomodation so be prepared to "rough it" and having the expectation of the ammenities that the Lodge at Elk Island has is simply being unrealistic..the boats and motors are in great shape and the Ice Machine, generator Fridge Stove and even the washroom are all very functional...the generator does need to be filled with gas so thats something you need to do regularly. The outpost now even has Wi Fi capabilities and a Satellite Dish for TV! Emailing Greg was a snap and if anything was missed or forgotten we simply sent emails every night to inform Greg of our situation...we had a prop issue on one of the boats as we hit a rock and we also forgot to order our Bottled water and it was a hot week outside and Greg was quick to respond and sent us out a new prop and a case of water the next day! Saying Greg is letting that place go to pot is a complete inaccurate statement...Like I said our group of 8 has been there 5 times so we love it and the fishing has been excellent every time...we even try new spots and came up with plenty of fish for Shore Lunches...Edmund Lake has some of the nicest Shore Lunch spots Ive ever encountered and I would highly recommend this outpost as long as you know what you are in for...you come and go as you please and cook for yourselves...simply an awesome experience and I'd go back there in a heartbeat! Greg Dick knows what hes doing and he and his staff do an exceptional job at looking after their guests!

let me start out by saying our group of 4 anglers have been fishing Canada every year for over 30 years. We have fished outpost and main lodge destinations in Ontario, Manitoba and the NWT many times. We like to move around and fish different species fro year to year. However, we have returned to several locations. Edmund Lake Outpost is one of the them.

Our most recent trip to Edmund was just after ice-out in early June 2017. As usual, the logistics of getting to the lodge and outpost was planned and executed without a flaw. We boarded the CalmAir charter for Elk Island Lodge in late morning, transferred to a float plan at the lodge and landed at Edmund Lake at 2:00 PM. We were on the water by 3:30 PM.

Edmund is a prolific fishery. On our first trip to Edmund we caught 9 trophy Pike (42" or greater). The following trip a 46.5" and 48.5" Pike were caught. This last trip was a once in a decade fishing experience. In one day, my fishing partner and I caught in excess of 300 Walleye and uncountable Pike. These fish were not trophies, but I'll take 20"-26" Walleyes and 26"-38" Pike all day long! The incredible thing about Edmund is the size and variety of water you can fish. It is one of the best Canadian fisheries we have ever fished.

The boats and motors at Edmund are satisfactory. 18" aluminum boats with swivel seats and 20 hp 2 stroke engines. The props were new this year and a spare prop was left for us in the cabin, just in case.

I have read other reviews for Edmund Lake Outpost and want to comment on the accommodations and logistics. As I mentioned earlier, getting to and from Edmund is seamless (assuming fair weather). The accommodations are not 5 star, but are not intended to be. The cabin is a three bedroom former Camp Manager's Home with indoor plumbing, washer and dryer, stove, ice maker, freezer, 2 refrigerators and a large living room. Internet Connectivity is provided via WiFi as well. The cabin is powered by a gasoline generator, which guests are expected to manage during their trip. The running water in the cabin comes directly from the lake and is pumped via a solar powered pump (with battery back-up). A 4 wheel drive ATV is provided to haul gear to and from the dock. All the making of a 5 star Outpost. Unfortunately, as with most outpost destinations, wear and tear, lack of maintenance and the remote nature of the outpost leads to breakdowns and complications. Fortunately, Greg Dick has been attentive and has always addressed our needs once he is made aware of a problem.

We will be returning to Edmund frequently.

I have been to many fishing Lodges over the years but Elk Island is just the best. This year I caught two Trophy Northern over 41". The guides do a superb job getting your shore lunch ready every day. Tom was our guide for the second time and he was really great with JoAnn .
The nice thing is they also have Golf Carts to get you from your cabin and down to the Lake. I have already booked 2018 for their 12 days trip. Greg just does a nice job of taking care of his guests and we had absolutely no complaints with the service. Everyone was jost so friendly that we will always remember our trips to Gods Lake

I'm always looking for a good value and Elk Island Lodge didn't disappoint. The fishing was top notch. 6 of the 8 in our group caught Master Angler sized pike and 3 others caught Master Angler brook trout. The guides and staff were very friendly.

We we mostly fly fishermen, and the lodge is more oriented to gear fishing. Even so, the guides did their best to work with us and learn what we needed. Still, I'd say you should probably know what you're doing.

The food and accommodations were about what you'd expect for a remote outpost - good but not gourmet or luxurious. But after a day of catching trophy pike, the food tasted great and the beds welcoming.

Nearly all of us are returning next year - a solid testament to how much we enjoyed ourselves.

Fishing CEO wrote a review Jun 2019
I have to say that there is an unsettling side to Elk Island Lodge. Please read the whole review....

I was there this year (2019) and was one of the first people to visit the lodge as the ice was just coming off the lake. Certainly the fishing is absolutely fantastic but, the rest of the experience was far from what I've experienced at other lodges at a similar price point.

The staff were all fantastic, very nice and helpful. But the owner, Greg, was far from inviting and I made to feel like I was an impediment to his day/week. A simple question about the next day's weather was met with a short retort then a turn and walk away. Then when my fishing partner asked about a scheduled fly-out Greg seemed to be upset, we were told that other guests who were on a 4 day package were to come first then, on the transition day, we would have a change to go. And of course he finished that conversation with him turning and walking away.

More on the fly-out later, trying to stay in chronological order. So the next day I heard there was a possibility to Fly-out to the Brook Trout Fishing spot. I asked Greg "I heard the Brook Trout was open, how can I go do that?" He asked if my about the guy I was with and if he was wanting to go too, I said no, he had no interests, Greg answer was "No, it is a 2 person trip and there wasn't an additional guide available", then silence, he said "I'll try to work my magic". After that he never mentioned it to me again, he never asked if I would pay extra for the missing person, he just dropped it. I was pretty disappointed.

Okay, so now we are 3 days into an 8 day trip, Never did Greg act like any other resort owner I've ever met. He was always disinterested (or at least acted that way) never asked us if we were having a good time and if there was anything else he could do to make us feel welcome, I mean we were lucky to get even a "Good Morning" out of him.

So now its the 4th day, the day of our fly-out trip. And up this this point of our trip, I thought Greg was just having a bad few days and all would get better, I was wrong... I noticed that on 3 of the 4 days Greg was down at the Floatplane to see his guests off, not on my day, he was no where in sight. Then, as we were getting our gear on the dock here comes another group of three men, there were going to the Brook Trout lake. The Pilot was told to fly us to our Lake then take the Brook Trout people to the River.

Having a lot of Flying experience, I used to fly a Beech KingAir 350, I knew that our group of 3 men all over 200lbs each plus all of our gear combined with the other group of 3 guys (probably the same weight load) and the pilot all jammed into a Beaver plane was grossly overloaded. When I asked the pilot about it, he agreed and said "I told Greg but said to go anyway". Then the Pilot said he thought we'd be okay, I said a prayer and off we went, just barely clearing the trees.

At that point I knew Greg, the owner, did NOT give two pieces of crap about me or anyone else on that plane. From then on I basically didn't say much to the guy and was ready to leave.

So to sum up the rest of the trip, yes the fishing is great, our guide was fantastic too as the staff. But the food was barely eatable and repeats ever 4 days, were were on an 8 day trip so were treated to some pretty awful food. On day 6 we asked for Hamburgers and were somewhat appeased by that gesture. Then, the next morning as we were sitting for breakfast we overheard the cook telling his staff that he was going to make any special orders any more. My fishing partner rather boldly stuck his head in the Kitchen and told the Cook to keep his voice down.

So any important part of an expensive trip to a very remote place is the food, part of the promise of a great vacation. Well, after day one we started to refer to the so called Chef and a glorified Cook. Breakfast was good most days but dinner was always really bad. Day one was BBQ Ribs, they were okay but were actually just boiled and covered with BBQ Sauce, over cooked peas and a scoop of instant mashed potatoes. Day two was a real treat, Chicken Helina (spelling) more like chicken hell. It was a breaded chicken breast stuffed with canned shrimp and bread crumbs, I should have taken a picture, it was a white bread crumb covered piece of rubber, it looked bad, smelled bad and tasted worst. We won't get into the Shrimp allergy we told them about on day one... Day three, Ham with scalloped potatoes and I think it was mixed vegetables. Yep, you guessed it, boiled ham that wasn't sliced it was more like pulled into little bits, gross, and the scalloped potatoes were those Betty Crocker dehydrated instant mix stuff, really??? I was totally grossed out. Day 4, Steak and Baked Potato, wasn't bad and probably the best meal while we were there.

Again, if you just want to fish, then this is your place. But if you expect a vacation destination with a gracious host that cares about you and your safety, it is not the place to go.

Richard, you have to let this go. Everything I said was true. I didn't ask for any money back, nor was any offered. You weren't at the Outpost! Just let it go!
