If you want to spend £90 for a nondescript shoebox in one of a thousand corporate hotels with views over the local dual carriageway and the sound of the motorway to lull you to sleep, this is probably not the hotel for you!
If you want individuality, unique spacious rooms and views across acres of open countryside then Gissing Hall ticks all those boxes.
There is clearly ongoing work taking place, this is a large building and a large project, however, there have been noticeable changes since my last visit.
Evening meals were excellent and great value. I'll be back!
Good luck having a shower in this place as the showers either don't work at all or will scold you. Avoid baths also, unless you would to have a soak with many ladybirds and flies. On entry it looked like the place had a tropical storm with the doors open, leaves were throughout the buildings covering the floors, oh and there were the lights! Half of which didn't have bulbs in which a guest had to go out and buy with his own money! Fire places were filled with rubble and old newspapers. I asked Martha to make sure they were cleaned up before the ceremony and she said 'of course, I will get right on it', just like she said when I mentioned the gigantic hole in the ceiling where the ceremony was held, which I replied with 'so you are going to get a plasterer to come on a Saturday to cover it in the next hour?' Received with a blank look. Martha had no skills with event planning whatsoever. We and both families spent all morning as well as the day before cleaning and setting everything up while she stood about and kept saying 'looking gorgeous guys'. Oh and then her husband Steve, rude is one word and once again a novice in the hospitality field! These people have no idea how to organise a wedding or any event on that note. Do not be charmed by Martha over politeness and way of trying to please. Anything you ask them to do will not be done, just like when the venue was booked a year and a half prior it was suppose to be completely refurbished. Luckily the only thing that had been sorted a year and a half later was the honeymoon suite...although their shower door did fall off.
The food luckily was organised by the bride and groom which was lovely, however the desert was not... We asked what it would be and good old Martha said it was a surprise. After everything else we weren't hopeful and of course we were right not to be. It certainly wasn't a desert, canopies on tacky foil trays were placed in the middle of the table. They looked like a child had made them in their first cooking class mixed with a few cheap chocolates from a box.
I usually choose to ignore trip advisers negative comments as I think some people are just difficult to please... But please do not ignore this! The building is beautiful and with the right owners and a million pounds thrown at it could be a wonderful place to stay. Unfortunately it's far from it and however many times Martha and Steve tell you how wonderful it is and it will definitely be refurbished in the time of your event they are lying! The effort from the bride, groom and both families were the only reasons that the wedding went well. Without their hard work it would of been a disaster. Leaving the next day Martha admitted that it isn't yet to hotel standard and needs work and that from now the venue is closed until the refurbishment...well from previous reviews that looks like another lie! I know that many family members will never let it go and will never be saying 'its funny when you look back at it'.
Please do not ignore these comments!
The highlight of the wedding wasnt waiting 2 hours for my desert, it was nipping back to the house to use the toilet (all the toilets were out of use in the hotel or had no paper...) to find a returning house owner who was pleasantly surprised to find a stranger taking a dump in his toilet!!!
This really is no joke, if it wasnt for the great amounts of alcohol and and being around friends, it may have been more of a concern. I would advise anyone if you want to have the biggest laugh of your life, check this place out. Give Martha some love on the desk she is pretty cool and is pretty straight up about the place.
One of the guests got a beer that was off and did not taste very well, so he asked for another one in exchange. The bar maids response was: Well you wouldn't go to a restaurant, taste some food and then ask to exchange it for something else, would you now'. Wow is all I can say. How this woman got to work in the service industry is beyond me. The happy couple had also arranged for a DJ to play after 21.00-24.00. The same bar maid kept turning the music down threatening to shut the party off. Now, if the music really was loud, then fair enough, but you couldn't even hear it from the outside. As the bride and groom were having their very last dance at 23.55, she actually TURNED THE LIGHTS ON in the middle of the song and shouted 'that's it party over' !!! She couldn't wait a couple of minutes for them to finish ??? Her colleagues were not much better.
I must say this is the worst service I have ever seen in my life. I feel sorry for the couple who had to pay money for 120 guests, and get treated like that in return. Anyone even thinking about this hotel, don't bother, there is plenty of others in that area, who will make you feel special on your big day.
The rooms are dreamy, pretty décor and out of a movie! Albeit some of the areas in the manor are under renovation, the bedroom we stayed in (no 6) had the prettiest 4 poster bed, softest bed sheets and mattress, was so comfortable, huge and had a Jacuzzi bathtub!
Ok so some things may need some work and there seems to be a lot happening there for renovations currently, however we never heard building noises (just the deafening lovely silence of the countryside!) or were inconvenienced by any works….
In regards to weddings its sad …but I’m sure the handover from the old owners to the new owners must have had a big part to play… Because our weekend “retreat” and party (with 3 course meal and great entertainment) for almost 40 people went swimmingly well!
The grounds and surrounding areas are great for walks, cycling, there’s air gliding around too for the extremely adventurous! Its romantic for couples, inspiring for writers, rich in colour and nature for painters, and so exquisitely quaint and “old” for photographers… There’s a real GRAMAPHONE which I loved when they played for us!
Their modern take on country house hosting was perfectly illustrated by the lovely entertainment: a local musicians and a hula hoop troupe!
Their interest in sustainability and locally sourced produce is also to admire… We went to a local gardener which had sourced the veg etc we ate at the dinner! She also plants edible flowers and has chickens - so cute… The community has accepted Gissing Hall as local partners and neighbours perfectly … And I can definitely see why!
So if you find a crack in the ceiling… I mean… Gissing Hall is a listed fifteenth century mansion… I can live with that when I’m surrounded by such authenticity and genuine antiques, history and contemporary taste… well a crack is the least of my worries!
In the 2 days spent there, I found that instead of empty subservience and shallow superficial “costumer service” I felt I was part of an experience and a very special place thats integrated and warmingly welcoming…
Hosts were addressing issues promptly and courteously, trying to cater for any needs, and going out of heir way to resolve an issue …
Looking forward to going there again… but now more looking into booking yoga retreats, drama workshops... lets see!
Was here for my brother in laws wedding and to say shambolic is an understatement.
The excuse of 'new owners fulfilling previous commitments while renovation takes place' only gives so much grace.
- a 3 hour wedding breakfast (difficult for an adult to take but when you have to entertain a 1year old) meaning the evening guest and entertainment all arrived before we'd had deserts, coffee and even speaches.
- Completely unorganised service for even the most common sence elements, (some had wine, some didn't - some had water, some didn't, who had what meal, who has or hasn't got a meal yet.)
- Not enough wine to go around.
- The rooms were in a terrible state of repair with a water feature in one (dripping from the roof)
- No one available in the morning to provide breakfast, in fact no one there to even take our money (actually had to leave contact details to call us if they wanted paying)
- Finally, overheard the owner slagging us off because someone had left a wine glass on a book (Now I know this isn't the done thing but to slag your guests off and especially in an establishment where a wine glass on the book is the least of its worries is incredible.)
Frankly poor from start to finish.
