Detailed Reviews

The campground is small with little sites but well shaded and well kept. It's a beautiful location and a quick hike down the gorge is the breathtaking ausable river rapids and falls. The bathrooms and showers are amazing. They look almost new and were kept extremely clean. I was very impressed! It would be nice if they had a small camp store with basic essentials, including firewood and ice.

I will be brief: The bathroom facilities have been upgraded, remodeled. It is up to the users not to mark them. At 7 A.M. the water for the shower did not heat up. If it eventually did, I had long since left wide-eyed from the chilly water. The place is clean. Everyone was friendly. Excellent help: Informative.

We were on the ravine side of the park in the trees which we would recommend as it is far more private. There are a number of outhouses around the park and one with showers. The only reason we gave it a 4 was that the cement outhouse and shower needs a very good cleaning and a lick of paint. No power. Many fisherman and cyclists camp here. Nice hikes and fishing close by as well as Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid.

Stayed here with a group of 24 in mid June of 2016. Weather was a little cold and rainy but the campground itself was great. I would recommend getting sites that are in the trees for a true camping experience, as other sites I noticed were in a more open field area. I was surprised to find a trail that led to an amazing waterfall just a 100 yards from our sites. The bathrooms and showers were fine as you would expect at a state park campground, nothing too special. Our sites were pretty level. I don't know about the others in the campground. I would stay here again.

If you are looking for cheap camping ($18/night) in the Lake Placid region than this is the site to choose. Great for people looking to take advantage of the area's outdoor recreation or tourists wanting to go into downtown Lake Placid. Stayed here with friends in October 2014. The site staff were very friendly. Yes. The sites are close together and small, but this campground is really just a great base camp for the region's many activities. The toilets and showers are old, but if you want luxury then stay in Lake Placid or pay double at a private campground. So just be ready for rustic. Each site had a picnic table and fire pit. There is a nice trail to a waterfall as well.

We really loved our stay at this campground for the most part. The sites were spacious with great fire pits. Since there were no hookups we depended on the bathhouse. Great sink for doing dishes. The showers were another story. They were a little run down to begin with...not surprising with state funding as it is...but additionally not very clean and one full of bugs. Thought maybe the first night was bad since it was Ironman weekend and it was busy...however we stayed until Wednesday and nothing seemed to be cleaned. Even the bathroom trash wasn't emptied and we had to ask the Rangers to restock the toilet paper. They were nice guys but clearly not into the janitor part of the job. Next stop had pay showers...I would gladly pay a slightly higher fee or pay for showers to be clean.

We camped here for a few nights in September, while we hiked around the Adirondacks during the days. Was a good campground, really friendly and helpful staff, there's a cool set of rapids down the hill behind the campgrounds. Only downside to this campground is that there isn't much tree cover dividing the campsites, so you can feel pretty close to your neighbors.

My wife and I have been going here the last 4 years and this past labor day things have changed. At night there was more of a party atmosphere than in the past. People could easily be heard up partying well past midnight. 630 am Saturday morning someone had their car stereo on really loud and was heard throughout the campgrounds. At 7am each day an extremely loud motorcycle was started from the camp office to leave and come back. The past 3 years we visited quiet hours where really enforced but not this year. We may abandon our short tradition and visit somewhere else next year.

My husband and I decided to camp near Lake Placid and picked this campground. Overall it was a great place to stay. Bathrooms always had toilet paper and the showers have hot water and we're fairly clean. The sites are nicely shaded and flat do great for our tent. There isn't a lot of privacy from other campers but it creates a nice community feeling and still plenty of trees for shade and putting up a hammock. The staff was very nice while we were here. There are trails to the water and it gives you more to do. It's a little further from Lake Placid then we thought but for upstate NY it really isn't bad at all. They have ice($2) and wood($9) for sale at the campground. I definitely recommend this as a campground. Good for singles, couples or families. We definitely plan to come back and maybe bring some friends :-)

Very open camp sites but a decent place to rest for the night. Bathrooms are very dated. Had I been willing to back track I would have gone back to campgrounds I passed west of Saranac. Still, a decent stop with a very friendly registration clerk.
