Getting there
Somewhat walkable
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
We’ve been staying at The Pines for over 25 years, in all seasons, and through 4 different owners. This is a 100+ year old hotel, and yes, there is no elevator. I’ve read some of the poor reviews here and can only say, you should have seen it in 1998, when it was The St. Moritz. The Pines has a lot of character and quirkiness, but all of the owners through the years have been good folks who have put their hearts into it and do their best. We haven’t gotten to know the new owners yet, but our stay this past winter for a few days of skiing was as comfortable and reasonably priced as ever. The Red Neck Bistro, while not open every night, has tasty barbecue and other dishes; you can dine in or order out. The walk down the hill to the main drag, where there are many more dining options, is invigorating—especially the walk back up (which we affectionately call “the slog”). If you demand luxe and have the money, there are other options. But as a family and now as seniors on a budget, we value the lower cost to higher charm ratio.

The Inn is conveniently located up the street from Main Street. The Inn does not have elevators. When we were there, we tried using the microwave, but it must have blown a fuse. No one knew how to repair it. We considered ordering from the restaurant but no one seemed to know if we could. Thankfully, it is close to eateries on Main Street and there a supermarket in walking distance. However, we may not stay there again.

Very nice older hotel. Excellent location, very clean and had loads of charm. The room was large with two queen beds both of which were extremely comfortable. Bathroom nice size and all features worked as requested. Would definitely stay again at this hotel in the future.

Built in 1900, the historic Pines Inn is the last surviving hotel remaining from the hotels built in Lake Placid's golden age of hotels, 1880-1900. This 6 story brick beauty also has an outstanding restaurant and bar, The Redneck Bistro with outdoor covered dining on the hotels porch. We loved the entrance to the lobby areas with the knotty pine and homey Adirondack feel. We had a nice queen room with bath overlooking the front of the property. Though there is no elevator, we had no problems navigating the grand old stairs and we were offered help if needed with our bags. The Pines Inn oozes charm, history and character and we loved sitting in the great room later in the evening with drinks enjoying the atmosphere and admiring the property. One can only image a winter's night 100 years ago with that huge fireplace roaring and a room full of guests. The wrap around front porch is also a nice late evening spot. The Pines Inn is a true gem as are the innkeepers, Frank and Jill Segger, who answered my many questions and ice requests over a 4 day period all in stride. My wife and I treasure these old historic properties and feel good that The Pines Inn is in pretty good hands to be shepherded toward it's 2nd century. If you are planning a trip to Lake Placid, do yourself a favor and stay with these fine innkeepers and their historic property, ditching some of the sterile chain hotels and saving some money in the process. The Pines isn't for everyone, so if you need a mini bar, fancy key cards and a millennial slick room décor, stay at that motel off the interstate. If you want a classic historic hotel with understated character, a north woods feel and a look into yesteryear, stay at the Pines. Also don't miss the incredible restaurant and bar. We look forward to a return visit.

I have been staying in at various hotels in Lake Placid for 4 days in August for 25 years now. First of all I hardly ever complain as I've always felt if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. When I first arrived I tried to ignore some initial problems but it seemed like the negative issues just kept piling up:
*No elevator means your "1st floor room really means climbing up 2 stories of stairs. *Wall-paper peeling with ceiling damage. *Chipped paint on windows sills. *"Daily maid service consists of the housekeeper placing clean towels on the dresser and emptying the 1 paper basket (only 1 small can per room). *One lamp per room. *Legs jammed between toilet and sink. *Window air conditioner ran entire 4 days and never cooled the room enough to shut down. *Toys and dirty tissue under bed . *No hair dryer. No irons. No ice machine. *Comfortable beds but ripped bed-skirts. *Dark walk-in closet with no lights or shelves and only 5 plastic hangers. *Dresser drawer was broken and fell on floor when we tried to open it.
I want to make note that the host/owner was very pleasant . There is also an Indoor/outdoor Restaurant on premises . I didn't eat there but it was always pretty busy. Also the location of hotel is perfectly located to walk to shops, restaurants, and the Lake.

We unfortunately did not choose the Pines Inn to stay at, but we ate there on a Sunday evening on their upstairs porch. My husband and I got the ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were falling off the bone and tasted wonderful! They make their own hickory smoked barbecue sauce you can add to your meat if you like it drenched in sauce. The coleslaw and potato’s were also very tasty. It is a short way up the hill On 86, but it was a hidden gem. Friendly staff, family owned. Try it!

Save yourself the disappointment in ruining your vacation. This place is an absolute dump. It’s stinks, there is an air deodorizer trying to mask some nasty smell and it’s everywhere. It’s disgusting, the TV is a computer monitor from the mid 90s and it’s maybe 17” big. The service is an absolute joke. They asked for no ID, no credit card only my name to confirm online booking. We aren’t fussy people, we camp in tents and I can say unequivocally this place should be condemned. In fact, I will be contacting the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce as this dump is a black eye on the stay and dissuades visitors. Never ever, ever again!!! The man at the front counter walked by us when we came in and ignored us. We had to call a number and some lady answered from god knows where and she wasn’t even on site.

Before you book this hotel look at the customer pictures. The is an old hotel badly in need of renovation. There is no elevator. It feels like a fire trap. God forbid there was a fire although they did have pipes crossing the ceiling with fire sprinklers. Exposed pipes is the theme here. Curtains with holes in them! Why would you leave them up? I stay in cheap hotels and this one is not worth even $70. Do not stay here.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights here. Somehow I accidentally booked the wrong date and the management was soo good to adjust the date and worked with me which I greatly appreciated it. I liked the history and nastalgia of the building. They have a nice lounge area to sit and relax with a small fireplace. They have coffee and tea always available. The restaurant on property was very good and reasonably priced. They were closed Mon.and Tues. but check as it could change. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. It was also much cheaper the. Other places in the area.

A very nice visit, economical and clean rooms. Main part of the city was just a few blocks away. Staff was very nice and engaging. Had a couple of glitches but staff made expedient effort to correct.
