Houtkapperspoort offers a nice natural environment and convenient travelling base for access to Cape Town's many attractions. The setting is peaceful, with well kept gardens and facilities, surrounded by trees and mountain views. The cottage we stayed in was very comfortable, with all the amenities we required - not luxurious, but appropriate to the price point. The cottages are quite close together, but we found the other residents were friendly and considerate, as Houtkapperspoort encourages. There can be a bit of traffic noise for the cottages closer to the main road, but we did not find this intrusive of the environment. Overall we had a great trip to Cape Town and enjoyed our stay at Houtkapperspoort.

Hello Douglas, Thank you for the fair and positive feedback, we always appreciate it. No5 Poplar Cottage is one of our more traditionally styled cottages, but always a favourite with families. I'm happy to hear that it provided you with a great base to explore the Cape, we hope to see you again soon. Thx Ross

Lovely Quaint cottage with garden views. Conveniently located. The kitchen was well appointed with everything we needed, and we appreciated the backup lighting provided during the power outages.
very clean with friendly guard at the gate house.

#25 TEAK Cottage at Houtkapperspoort, Hout Bay

We have rented many dozens of houses and cottages over the years around the world and in Cape Town. This cottage is the worst we have ever rented over many years. We left as soon as alternative accomadation could be found and before end of rental period at a loss. On arrival at cottage we immediately tried to cancel but the landlord and administrator was not available for two days (large number of urgent messages left).

Importantly photographs and descriptions should be same as reality. In this case the shabby cottage was very different to the place advertised and promised. The website photographs take care not to reflect the old and scruffy furniture, the dirty sofa, the large holes in the sofa armrests, the mildew between the tiles in bathroom (clearly unhygienic and make it uninhabitable). Bathroom towel rail broken off wall, toilet roll holder broken off wall, the shower tap broken off wall and does not work, both bath taps loose, one tap falling off frequently. Very little hot water pressure for a proper shower. The kitchen is grubby, pans dirty and need replacement, just ONE wine glass which sums up the place.

The manager of the entire Houtkapperspoort complex told us he had received many complaints about number 25.

This is so unfortunate. I agree that it is totally unacceptable and would not like this experience to prevent you from coming back to this special place. We own a cottage on the estate and have a fabulous agent, Ross, from Stayscape. He makes sure that all the cottages that he rents out are up to standard or he won’t rent them He always on hand to assist. Book directly with Ross and you won’t be sorry.

Upon enquiry, Ross provided me with all the necessary information regarding the various cottages available to us at relatively short notice. The reservation was handled swiftly and efficiently and on arrival we were blown away by this beautiful mountain estate offering scenic views and a tranquil atmosphere. Houtkapperspoort had cottages with built in braais which sadly, are not readily available in the Western Cape. Our cottage offered 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms which were ideal for the family. Having said that, the kitchen was definitely short of some basic equipment such as steak-knifes, cutting and cooking utensils as a whole. Yes, some kitchen basics were there but I did expect a bit more given the price tag per night. I did however enjoy the bigger fridge. Other than that, we had a lovely stay and will definitely consider booking there again. Maybe a different cottage this time around though.

Thank you for the very positive review and the feedback offered, we're glad to hear that overall you loved HKP and enjoyed your stay. All of our cottages are individually owned, so they all vary slightly in their offering, but I would hope that for the most part they all have features, appliances and utensils that allow for a comfortable relaxing stay for guests. The website Houtkapperspoort Estate showcases each cottage and allows you to see and compare each one. Hope to see you all again next time you visit Cape Town

We highly recommend staying at this beautiful estate as it is nearby, the airport (25min), and in the middle of the best wine yards (Groot, Glenn and Beau) and also only 10 minutes from the beach (Hour Bay).
The houses are totally beautiful and the nature is great. Also, you feel 100% secure is there is a 24 hour security guard at the entrance.
I also must say that the administrator, Ross is the best we had!
Highly recommended also to stay with kids (playground and tennis and pool with a stunning view).
We come back again !!

A truly relaxing environment againt Table Mountain, a short distance from Kirstenbosch Gardens, Constantia, Houtbay beach, and many other scenic spots along the peninsula. Convenient, yet still feels secluded in a built up area.

The premises are well looked after, the cottages are a luxurious home from home holiday escape.
Seeing the estate buck out grazing towards dusk is always a lovely sight.

Although management changed since my last stay in 2020, it is still a lovely place to stay.

We stayed in was a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage. 2 bedrooms with Queen size bed, and one with 2 single beds. Beautifully made up with crisp fresh linen.
All bedrooms are air-conditioned.
The particular cottage has an inverter fitted so as not to be inconvenienced by Eskom loadshedding (power cuts).

An open gas fireplace (little fingers must be warned to keep away) was lovely for a chilly night.

The following amenities in this cottage were: a washing machine, gas stove top and electric oven, ample sized fridge-freezer, all crockery and cutlery provided as well as cooking utensils.
In the back garden a fire pit to sit around and relax in the evenings, next to a braai.

Hi Jennifer, you are making us blush with such a glowing review, but thank you, it's greatly apprecaiated. Poplar cottage is well set up for families and often receives great reviews, the space, the back garden braai/ firepit and the invertor all help to make for a great holiday cottage. Thanks again for the great review and 5 out of 5 score, we hope to see you again before too long. Kind Regards, Ross

Nice 2 bed cottage but needs updating eg poor kitchen lighting, no cooker extractor, broken outdoor furniture. Well maintained grounds and friendly staff. Felt secure. Good location near Hout Bay and Constantia, good access to Kistenbosch. Occasional road noise from trucks but otherwise restful location and great sunset views

The selfish part of me doesn’t want to write this review as we feel we’ve found a hidden gem!
All communication with Ros was excellent and the minor issues were quickly resolved. HKP is breathtakingly pretty with superb planting and gardens. The cottages are all charming and it is a pleasure to walk around, with superb mountain views. It offers the best of both worlds being close to everything but feeling tucked away and able to get way from the hustle and bustle and retreat back to our home away from home. We stayed with friends at Yellow Wood Cottage and the only thing we could fault is the kitchen scissors not working,so perhaps a new pair is in order. We enjoyed the wildlife, Springbok, birds, Guinea Fowl, a friendly cat and even Baboons, who needs the bush! The pool is beautiful with sun beds and if I’m being picky cushions for the sunbeds would be good and some parasols for shade. My husband and I stayed here with another couple of very good friends which worked well even with a shared bathroom!!! We absolutely loved our ten days and will definitely return.

We chose Houtkapperspoort as a base when visiting family in and around Cape Town. From the initial enquiry through to arrival, everything was very smooth with excellent communications and help from Ross. It was easy to reserve and pay by money transfer. We reserved 3 cottages and everything was just as described with all the facilities that we needed as a large party of 9 adults and 2 small children. The cottages were spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Lovely pool and play areas. The team on site led by Lazlo were very attentive and always available to deal with any small query. The estate is very safe and secure and excellently located for Hout Bay and Cape Town but far enough away to feel that you really are in the mountains. We will certainly be returning. Thank you very much.
