Midway on the Viking Trail just north of Gros Morne National Park in a pristine setting on the Portland Creek River. The river banks served as a fishing retreat formerly operated by the famous American sports fisherman, Lee Wulff. The adventures of the American fisherman, who first established a camp on the river in the mid l940's, earned the stream a reputation as a first-class salmon river. At our campground, you can enjoy fully serviced RV Sites for all sizes of campers and motor-homes. Trees surround both out pull through and back in RV sites creating privacy and tranquility. Our non serviced tent sites are located along the Portland Creek River and offer beautiful views of the long range mountains. Six cottages are available (24′ x 26’/7m x 7.9m), each with two bedrooms, fully furnished and equipped. Each cottage has a covered deck, chairs and a barbecue are supplied for your convenience. Feel at home in the tranquil wilderness of the Viking Trail. An open concept luxury lodge is also available (34′ x 40’/10.3m x 12.1m). Two levels, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, great room, dining, kitchen, covered deck, as well as an uncovered deck located at the back of the lodge. At our main office you will find a small convenience store, laundromat, and public bathrooms with showers. Be sure to stop by for a loaf of freshly baked homemade bread or baked good. Wifi is available at the main office only, we offer indoor and outdoor seating for your comfort.

This resort was very nice! Cabins where very nice and up to date.
Two bedrooms with a double bed in one and two twin beds in the other!
Very peaceful and quiet area. Owners were fantastic people!
Should stop at a big grocery store when you get off the ferry for your groceries
that you think you might want for your stay.
There is a little canteen/store there with items. It does have a laundromat there to.
River very close by which was nice!
Not a lot to do in that area unless you are there for salmon fishing.

While the resort is no more, this is a most beautiful RV Park. Situated along the 14 km Portland Creek River, this is one of the nicest campground that we stayed at during our 4 weeks in Newfoundland Labrador. There are 29 level serviced sites (EWS, 30 amp), half are pull-through, each separated by a row of trees giving nice privacy ($25). The trees are so high that I could not get reception on my roof-mounted satellite dish! There are also several unserviced sites but they look as if they have not been occupied in some time ($15). There also are 4 fully equipped two-bedroom cabins. There are clean washrooms with free hot showers and laundry facilities (wash & dry = $1.75 ea), but no recycling. The feel here is more of a provincial park that a private campground. There is a boat launch, a wharf, and a small beach where we spent one late August afternoon lying out in the sun. Firewood, ice, and fresh baked bread are available at the office. There is no wifi, but cell phone service as well as a payphone are available. The nearest grocery store is in Cow Head, about 33 km south.

Stopped here overnight on our way from Deer Lake to L'anse aux Meadows, breaking up what would have been a very long drive into two more manageable legs. Mountain Waters was perfect for this. We stocked up on groceries in Deer Lake so we'd have more selection than at other grocery stores along the way. Once at Mountain Waters, we found our cabin meticulously clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. We took a quick walk down to the Portland Creek Pond and then relaxed in the comfy chairs on our porch. All of the staff were very friendly and easy-going.

Although the cottage was clean and comfortable, we noticed that a coffee bag had been torn open but not replaced, and that there were some empty containers in the recycling bin from previous occupants. Nothing major.
The issue we found is that this is NOT a resort. There are no amenities on location, and specifically there is not food service, not even bottled water for sale.
Once we got there, we had to drive south 40 more min., and back, in order to get dinner and buy some items for breakfast.
We stopped here along the way from L'anse aux Meadows to Deer Lake airport, we could have stopped near the grocery/restaurant area and save and extra hour of driving.

Very clean rustic cabin in woods well furnished. Listened to the wind in the pines. Would definitely stay for several days or a week. Definitely intended to be self sufficient. Nice porch to sit on. Uncrowded and peaceful.

Stayed only one night because we were on the "road " visiting but if we would have had more time on the Island ; we would have stayed extra days for sure! Everything was PERFECT - from the wonderful greeting from the owner, the price , the laundry facilities; bathroom/showers / campground sites etc etc ....Everything was perfect ! Lot of hard work is put in this campground and you can see it ! WONDERFUL campground ! Recommend BIG TIME ...

Spent 3 nights in a 2 bedroom cottage and we loved our stay. It is very secluded on a beautiful lake with an amazing view. Cabin was very clean with everything we needed including bell satellite. Only about 30 min from where we went in gros morne. Only thing we would have done differently is grocery shop in deer lake, so we could prepare meals at the cabin (full kitchen and bbq). There was only 1 restaurant nearby with a limited menu and a very small grocery store.

The cabin had what we needed to be comfortable: a lot of natural light, good sitting areas, beds were comfortable, well stocked kitchen. Best of all, everything was so clean and well kept. Do walk to the waterfront to enjoy the view.

I stayed at Mountain Waters on a July fishing trip with my parents and my brother and we stayed at one of the cottages. The cottage was a 2 bedroom separate unit: 1 master bedroom with a queen and a 2nd bedroom with 2 twin beds. Both bedrooms had plenty of room and closets and the beds were very comfortable. The unit also had a fully equipped kitchen (I mean fully equipped - appliances, dishes, pots and pans). The bathroom and shower was very clean and there was a living room with a pull-out couch if required. Additionally, there was a 2-burner BBQ on the deck.

The view is incredible with the mountains in the background and the lake in in the foreground. I would consider an extended summer stay here when I retire - maybe a month. To be honest - I am a little skeptical in giving such a great review because I would rather keep this place to myself for my fishing trips. The only draw-back is that it can be difficult to book a "good" fishing guide if you are not from the province; however, this is an issue all over the province and not a knock against Portland Creek. If you are willing to talk with the locals - they are more than willing to let you know where the good fishing spots are located.
